9th Grade English – Writing a BODY PARAGRAPH for CONTROLLING IDEA

1. TOPIC SENTENCE – Your topic sentence should say the passage name and introduce “what” a hero is (use the "answer" from your prewriting page).

Ex: In “My Night With Nicole,” Paris Hilton reveals that being a hero means being selfless.

2. EXAMPLE(S) FROM THE TEXT – Next, you should describe at least one specific detail that illustrates your topic sentence. Remember, give brief background for the quote first. Then, set up the quote. You must use a quote with a page # in this section! If more detail is needed after the quote, include it.

Ex: Throughout the text, Paris shows that heroes must be selfless, constantly thinking of others rather than themselves. She describes several friendships in which she puts her friends above herself. One such friendship was with Nicole Richie. One night, Nicole was sick and Paris nursed her back to health. Paris explains, "Nicole was as sick as a dog, so I stayed up all night to help her feel better" (p. 64, Lines 456-459). Even though Paris missed her date with Joe, she stayed and took care of her friend.

3. LITERARY TERM – Identify what literary term is shown by your quote or example. Be sure to include the “magic” literary term word AND an adjective if needed (characterized as angry; angry tone; theme of death)

Ex: In this example, Paris is characterized as completely caring and dedicated when she cares for Nicole. She uses a simile, “sick as a dog,” to describe her friend’s extreme illness. Despite this sickness, the loving Paris takes care of her friend.

4. EXPLAIN HOW YOUR EXAMPLE SHOWS THE CI – Now, tell the reader what is being shown about being a hero in the example. Be specific!

Ex: In this example, Paris' characterization shows that heroes go above and beyond to care for others. They sacrifice their own concerns for those around them. In this case, Paris gives up her date to save her friend’s life. A true hero thinks of others before she thinks of herself. This altruism allows heroes to protect their men and build the support they may need to succeed during difficult times.

5. CONCLUDE YOUR PARAGRAPH – The concluding sentence should summarize the main idea of your paragraph to remind the reader of the argument you just made.

Ex: The characterization of Parish Hilton reveals that a true hero is a selfless person.

CONTROLLING IDEA – CONCLUSION WORKSHEET

1. Restate the two things that were proven about being a hero. [In these passages from The Odyssey, being a hero is shown to involve ______ and _______.]

2. Restate the examples (in your own words – no quotes!) from each body paragraph that show the two above things about being a hero. [When Odysseus _________, he shows a hero to be________. Later, when he _______, he proves heroism to be ____.

3. Make a “Final Comment.” You may do this in several ways:

• Compare or contrast the two things proven about being a hero.

• Briefly bring up an opposing argument and explain how it is incorrect.

• Make a general statement about the main idea of the essay or the CI theme (heroism) in general.
