Unit of Study: Organizing Writing-transitions
Essential Questions: 1. What are time order transition words? 2. How do you use time order transition words in a sentence?
TEKS/Essence Statements: 3.22) Oral and Written Conventions/Conventions. Students understand the function of and use the conventions of academic language when speaking and writing. Students continue to apply earlier standards with greater complexity. Students are expected to: (A) use and understand the function of the following parts of speech in the context of reading, writing, and speaking: (viii) time-order transition words and transitions that indicate a conclusion; Critical Skills/Postsecondary Goals: This section needs to be completed based on the students in your class. Instruction/Classroom Activities: Small Group Instruction:
? The teacher will inform the students that they are going to learn what time-order transition words are and how they can use it in a sentence or paragraph.
? The teacher will write the following words on the board. first, then, next and last ? The teacher will inform the students that these time-order transition words are used when
following directions. The teacher will demonstrate the use of these words by saying "We are going to use these words to make something that you will like."
"Today we are going to make a milk shake." "First, you get out the blender. Then, you get your favorite ice cream out of the freezer and the milk from the refrigerator. Next, you scoop out the ice cream and pour in the right amount of milk. Carefully put the lid on the blender and with your parents help turn it on. Blend until it is mixed together well. Stop the blender and pour it into a cup. Last, drink your delicious milkshake."
The teacher will show the students how these words helped transition from one task to the next, how these words allowed you to do something in the proper order to accomplish the task. The teacher will explain that only in this order would you successfully be able to make a milkshake. For example, turning the blender on before adding ingredients would not be successful.
Stations/Centers:
? Snack activity: The teacher will lay out the ingredients to make a peanut butter sandwich. The teacher will have laminating cards that have FIRST, THEN, NEXT, LAST. The students will be given 4 cards that have directions on it. They will place it under the correct word. The students will try to make a peanut butter sandwich with the directions they made. The teacher will check to see if they were correct.
? Writing activity: The students will have a paragraph that has transition words omitted from it. The student will add the omitted words from a bank of words given to them.
? Newspaper activity: The students will be a bank of words and a newspaper. They will find and highlight all the time transition words. This can become a game to see who finds the most.

? Computer activity: Time sequencing game:
? Sequencing activity: The student will be given sequencing cards and they will have to put them in order.
Individualized Communication Planning: This section needs to be completed based on the individualized communication needs of the students in your class.
Differentiated Tasks: Level 3
The students will generate a sentence by using time-order
transition words.
Level 2 The students will identify items
by communicating "yes" or "no" or indicating by touching, picking up or placing pictures or
picture words using visual representation to indicate time-
order transition words.
Level 1 The student will explore pictures by maintaining focus as teacher
shows pictures representing prepositional phrases. The student will show some response when shown the pictures.
Materials/Resources: Ingredients for milk shake Blender Ingredients for peanut butter sandwich Laminating cards with the following words: FIRST, THEN, NEXT, and LAST Newspapers Highlighter Paragraph with omitted transition words Sequencing cards Time transition words:
