NCAA APPEARANCES 1950 The Cougars roared to a 14-2 start and cruised to a 27-4 mark in the regular season, including a 12-2 mark and first place finish in the Pacific Coast Conference Northern Division. WSC swept a pair of games in Pullman against Stanford to capture the PCC crown and traveled to Omaha, Neb., for the first College World Series at the site. After defeating Tufts in the opener, future Major League pitcher Gene Conley and Rod Keough pitched back-toback complete game victories over Alabama and Rutgers, respectively. WSC was routed by Texas and the Longhorns defeated Rutgers to set up a winner-take-all game with the Cougars. Despite three hits by shortstop Eddie Coleman, the Cougars were blanked 3-0 and finished national runner-up with a 32-6 record.

1956 After a 6-3 start, Washington State ripped off 15-straight wins and went on to post a 26-6 regular season record. Included in the winning streak were five wins by Jerry Bartow, including four of his school-single season record 10 complete games. The Cougars won the PCC Northern Division with an 11-3 mark and hosted USC with the conference title and NCAA District 8 spot in the CWS on the line. Bartow bested the Trojans on a six-hitter in the opener and Bill Rich, who batted .422 in 90 at bats during the season, drove in all five runs in game two and the Cougars swept the series. In Omaha, Neb., Bradley defeated WSC 4-3 in the opener and New Hampshire handed Ron Aiken his only loss of the season to eliminate the Cougars.

1960 The Cougars won 18 of their first 19 games, including a 16-game winnings streak on their way to posting a 28-4 regular season record. Washington State won the PCC Northern Division with a 9-2 mark and traveled to USC for the NCAA District 8 Playoff. Dick Montee, who had a team high 10 wins during the season, won the first game of the series in relief. The Trojans won the next two games to take the District 8 title by outscoring the Cougars 18-8.

1961 Washington State started off the season 16-4, winning all seven home games during that stretch, and finished 21-8 in the regular season. The Cougars never lost more than two consecutive games during the season. The Cougars won the PCC Northern Division with an 8-4 record and hosted USC in the NCAA District 8 Playoff. USC swept the series with 13-6 and 10-4 victories.

1965 Washington State won 16 of its first 17 outings, including 12-straight to open the season, and rolled to a 29-6 regular season record. The Cougars won the PCC Northern Division at 14-4 and hosted Stanford in the NCAA District 8 Playoff. In the opener against the Indians, Harold Brunstad plated two runs with a double in the eighth to give WSU a 2-1 victory and the Cougars routed Stanford 13-3 in game two to give head coach Bobo Brayton his first trip to the College World Series. In Omaha, Neb., WSU split its first two games, defeating Texas and losing to Ohio State. The Cougars edged Connecticut by a run to set up a rematch with the Buckeyes that turned out to be a classic. Steve Arlin struck out 20 Cougars and Ohio State pushed across an unearned run in the 15th inning for a 1-0 win that ended WSU's season. The Cougars finished fourth in the nation according to Collegiate Baseball.

WASHINGTON STATE IN THE NCAA POSTSEASON The Cougars are making their 15th appearance in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship...Washington State has played in four College World Series with its best finish being national runner-up in 1950...Cougars are 25-29 all-time in the NCAA postseason... under the NCAA regional format, WSU is 14-15 in eight regional appearances...here is a look at the Cougars' past NCAA postseason performance.

NCAA APPEARANCES 1966 The Cougars won 16 of their first 19 games on their way to a 33-6-1 record during the regular season. Washington State won the PCC Northern Division with a mark of 15-1 and headed to the NCAA District 8 Playoffs. In the first game against Fresno State, Cougar pitcher Michael Avey posted a win in relief during 5-2, 13-inning victory. After a loss to USC, the Cougars defeated Fresno State 2-1 in 15 innings. A 7-4 loss to USC ended the season.

1975 WSU jumped to a 9-1 start on its way to winning the Pacific-8 Conference. The Cougars traveled to Tempe, Arizona to play in the NCAA Rocky Mountain Regional and lost the opener against Arizona State. After wins against Northern Colorado, Puget Sound and Arizona State, the Sun Devils won a deciding game to earn a spot in the CWS.

1976 The Cougars won their final 10 regular season games to finish 39-12 and win the Pacific-8 Conference with a 16-2 record. Washington State hosted the NCAA West Regional where the Cougars blasted four home runs, including three off future big-league hurler Mike Scott, to defeat Pepperdine in the opener. WSU took two of three games from Cal State Fullerton behind a pair of wins from tournament MVP Bob Sherwood and advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. At the CWS, Washington State scored in five of the first six innings and defeated Oklahoma in the first round before losing to Arizona State and Maine to end the season 43-15. Future big-league pitcher Eric Wilkins led the Cougars with 10 victories and WSU averaged over seven runs a game on offense.

1977 WSU won 10 of its first 11 and captured the Pac-10 North with a 14-4 record. The Cougars advanced to the NCAA Rocky Mountain Regional where they went 2-2 with wins over Portland State and Cal State Fullerton.

1978 The Cougars won 41 games, inlcuding a 15-3 record and first place finish in the Pac-8 North. WSU made its school-record fourth-straight NCAA postseason appearance.

1984 WSU won 41 games and tied for first in the Pac-10 North with a 15-6 record. The Cougars swept three games in the Pac-10 North Tournament before losing two games in the NCAA West II Regional.

1987 Co-captain Jeff Hooper belted 21 home runs to lead WSU to a 44-win season. The Cougars advanced to the NCAA West I Regional where they won two games before a pair of one-run losses ended their season.

1988 John Olerud batted a school-record .464 and was 15-0 on the mound as the Cougars won a schoolrecord 52 games. WSU defeated Santa Clara twice, but one-run losses to USC and host Fresno Sate at the NCAA West I Regional ended its CWS dream.

1990 WSU won 48 games, including a school-record 19 in conference (tied by the 2009 team). Future big leaguer Scott Hatteberg batted .381.

COUGARS ENJOY HISTORIC SEASON WSU won a school record 21 games at home and tied the school record for conference victories with 19...Cougars posted three conference sweeps for the first time since 1991 and five sweeps overall for the first time since 1989...WSU swept four, three-game series for the first time since 1976, including the first three-game sweep of arch-rival Washington in Pullman since 1979...WSU is ranked 24th this week by Collegiate Baseball.

CONSECUTIVE WINNING SEASONS Washington State has clinched its fourth-straight winning season, something the Cougars had not accomplished since 1994 when a 35-26 record capped a run of 37-consecutive campaigns with a mark above .500.

MARBUT AMONG THE BEST With 31 victories this season, Washington State Head Coach Donnie Marbut has recorded 146 wins in his five-year Cougar career...ranks third all-time at Washington State behind two legends in the program, Bobo Brayton and Buck Bailey...Brayton (1962-94) won 1,162 games during his 33-year tenure while Bailey (1927-42, 1946-61) amassed 603 victories in his 32 seasons on the Palouse.

Feb. 20 Derek Jones became the first WSU freshman to start a season opener in left field since 1996... Jared Prince was the first Cougar to homer in a season opener since 2005...Matt Argyropoulos hit his first-collegiate home run and had a career-high four RBI in game two of the doubleheader.

Feb. 27 Jeremy Johnson notched his first win since May 26, 2006 in a 9-2 victory over No. 16 Oklahoma...Cougars scored seven times in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie.

March 1 Shea Vucinich homered twice, including one to lead off the game in a 10-6 victory over No. 16 Oklahoma...first Cougar since 2005 to open a game with a home run...Paris Shewey earned his first-collegiate victory by blanking the Sooners for two and one-third innings and Jeremy Johnson fanned a career-high six in three innings to notch his first-collegiate save.

March 28 Chad Arnold tossed seven shutout innings and WSU won 11-0 at California to secure its first series win over the Golden Bears since 2004 and its first in Berkeley since 2001.

April 3 Matt Way pitched a complete game in WSU's 7-2 win over UCLA...Cougars scored six times in the seventh inning.

April 4 The Cougars defeated UCLA 4-3 to open conference play 4-1 for the first time since 1998 and clinch back-to-back series victories to begin conference since 1995.

April 6 James Wise picked up a win in relief, the first victory of his career, in a 12-8 win over BYU... WSU scored eight times in the sixth inning.

April 7 Michael Ratigan picked up his sixth win in relief during his career, one shy of the WSU all-time top 10 and the Cougars defeated BYU 13-4.

April 12 Michael Weber broke a 4-4 tie with a home run in the eighth and WSU won 10-4 at No. 1 Arizona State to become the first Cougar team in any sport to beat a top-ranked team since volleyball against Stanford in 2002...WSU secured a conference record above .500 through three Pac-10 series for the first time since reunification in 1999.
