This means that, upon arriving at the school or entering school property each day, the students must stay in their designated areas on school property until dismissal time. Students may not leave the campus without proper authorization from the office. If a situation requires a student to leave before dismissal time, the sign-in/out procedure must be followed. (pg. 11)Students may arrive at school at 7:30 a.m. on school days. This is the time that school staff will be on duty to supervise students. Earlier arrival of students is strongly discouraged. When necessary for a short time, arrangements may be made with the school to have a staff member on duty to supervise students who need to arrive at school earlier than 7:30 a.m. Breakfast is available starting at 7:30 a.m. forduring first period for high school students and after first period for middle school studentsdelivered to all students in their first period class. After dismissal time, students must be under the direct supervision of a coach, teacher, or other authorized person to be able to stay in the school or on school grounds. If authorized to stay after school, the student must be in close proximity (in the same area or room) to the coach, teacher, or other authorized person, and that person must acknowledge that the student is under his/her or her charge. This directive is in effect for the safety of the students and to prevent liability issues for the school system. Failure to comply with the directive could result in disciplinary action.Entry to the school during non-school days will require authorization by the administration. The West Virginia Department of Education requires all schools to ask for the student’s social security number. Upon receipt, the social security number will be used for school records.STUDENT SAFETY AND SCHOOL ACCESSWe strive to ensure the physical and emotional safety of students and staff at all times. Calhoun County Schools have installed electronic locks on our building. The front and rear doors will automatically unlock at 7:340 for students to enter the building. The doors will remain locked from ingress during instructional hours. Parents and visitors may gain entry by use of the door buzzer. To this end, the following procedures will be enforced daily:Visitor parking is provided across from the front of the building or in the front lot. Vehicles cannot be parked in the fire lane along the front walkway at any time.Every visitor and parent is required to enter the school building by the front door after being identified and admitted by office personnel.Every visitor and parent is to report directly to the main office upon entering the building.Identification may be required to be seen by any staff member. If dropping off their children at school before 8:050 a.m., parents/guardians are asked to drive to the back of the school building to do so. Calhoun Middle High School recognizes that a direct relationship exists between daily attendance and student performance, graduation, and good work habits. This policy is intended to promote daily school attendance. Daily attendance is necessary for students to meet their school’s academic program standards as each day’s learning builds on the work previously completed. While students and parents/guardians have the ultimate responsibility for daily school attendance, the laws of West Virginia require school administrators to enforce compulsory school attendance. Therefore, unless a legitimate reason causes them to be absent, all students are expected to attend school faithfully and to comply with this attendance policy.ResponsibilityCalhoun Middle High School will implement this policy utilizing the following steps:Appointment of a designated attendance coordinator who collects attendance data and makes referrals to appropriate agencies.Provide students and parents with a copy of this policy in the student handbook.Maintenance of current and accurate attendance records including:A register of attendance for every student enrolled in school.Documentation of excused and unexcused absences.Procedures for effectively communicating with parents regarding absences.Field Trips and Reward TripsField Trips - Students will only be allowed to attend school related field trips if their current term conduct grade is a 7580% or higher. If the trip occurs at the beginning of the term, the previous term grade will be used for eligibility. If the student’s overall conduct grade (YTD) is better than the term grade which the trip occurs, the teacher and/or administrator may use that for eligibility if the student’s current behavior is deemed appropriate. Conduct Trips – Students will only be allowed to participate in conduct reward activities if their current term/semester grade is 90% or higher. Principles of OperationWhen a student is absent from school, written verification of the reason must be presented to the school office upon the student’s return to school. The written verification must have the student’s name (first and last), reason for the absence, date(s) of the absence, and the parent/guardian/custodian’s signature. The absence will be recorded as unexcused until written verification is presented. Each student may utilize ten parent notes per academic year, once the parental notes are used additional absences will remain unexcused, Excused AbsencesThe following will be considered excused absences:School-approved curricular/co-curricular activities. Failure of the bus to run due to hazardous conditions or other causes. However, if the bus runs later during the day students will be expected to attend if conditions permit. The principal will make the final decision with regard to individual excuses. Medical and/or dental appointments which cannot be scheduled outside the school day and when the absence is verified in writing by the physician/dentist.Legal or religious holidays with verification. Personal illness when school attendance jeopardizes the personal health of classmates. Any student absent from school for three (3) consecutive days or ten (10) intermittent days due to personal illness may be required by the principal to have a doctor's statement upon re-admittance to school. Serious illness in the immediate family. Absences claimed for illness in the immediate family must be accompanied by a doctor's statement that the student's presence was essential. Death in the immediate family resulting in up to three (3) days of absence. "Immediate family" includes mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, or any person living in the same household. Home/hospital instruction can be provided to any student who cannot attend school because of a temporary or serious health problem as certified by a licensed physician and who is absent for a period that has lasted or will last more than three (3) weeks. Other prior-approved absences are at the discretion of the principal.
