PVSC Recognizes Local Businesses With Perfect Environmental Compliance Records

For the 24th straight year, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) is honoring companies that operated in the previous calendar year without having incurred a single effluent (wastewater discharge) or reporting violation.

Companies within the PVSC service area who qualify as Significant Industrial Users are issued Sewer Use Permits that include limits for the quality of effluent the companies may discharge into the sewer system. These companies must also monitor and report on their discharges to PVSC on a monthly basis. Compliance violations occur when a company fails to file its monthly report on time or exceeds its permitted discharge limits.

Each facility that goes an entire calendar year without a single violation earns a PVSC Permit Compliance Award. Included among this year's honorees is Sika Corporation of Lyndhurst, which has earned the award 22 consecutive years. Darling International of Newark has earned the award 17 straight years. Stefan Enterprises of Garfield and Unicorp of Orange have garnered the honor 14 consecutive times. Anheuser-Busch of Newark and Sunbrite Dye of Passaic have each received the award 13 consecutive times. Several companies have earned the award for a full decade or more.

"Our Commissioners and I are very pleased to honor 100-plus companies that have put forth the commitment and effort to meet the requirements of their Sewer Use Permit," said Executive Director Gregory Tramontozzi. "Achieving perfect compliance is challenging and expensive. These businesses do it year after year because of their ongoing mission to operate in an environmentally responsible way."

"These award winners help to protect public health and the environment by constantly adhering to strict discharge limits," added PVSC Director of Inspection and Compliance Herbert Skinner. "These companies should be justifiably proud of their remarkable accomplishments."
