HUNTING TRADITIONS

By : Jack McInerney , Sales Associate The real estate professionals at Liv e Water Properties are unique in the passions we hav e with hunting, fishing and the outdoors. I am an aspiring fisherm an, with a passion for hunting that has not allowed m uch tim e for im prov ing m y fishing bey ond the label of nov ice.

This fall, after m any day s spent in the hills chasing elk with m y bow and hav ing m any shooting opportunities on bulls, I filled m y tag with a sm all bull taken with m y rifle on the second day of general season. It rates up there as one of m y all-tim e special hunting m em ories. Standing with m e as I took the bull were m y 82 -y ear-old m om and m y 1 7 -y ear-old daughter.

Our current ranch is located on the northern edge of the Little Belt Mountains in central Montana. I hav e dev eloped the property for hunting, but the m ost special m em ories circle around tim e spent with fam ily and friends. During the afternoon with m y m om and daughter, we enjoy ed telling stories of hunting and fishing trips throughout each of our liv es. The oral history of m y fam ily m ost often includes the outings from our house in the m orning darkness, or the nights when we were

expected shortly after dark and arriv ed hom e near m idnight. As m y dad died when I was 1 3 , these tales are his grandchildren's opportunity to know him through the retelling of our past adv entures.

Purchasing a ranch in Montana prov ides the beginnings of a new base cam p for adv entures and a pinnacle m om ent in m any of our liv es as we are fulfilling a dream of owning a recreational property in the m ountain west. In m y initial perspectiv e, the purchase of our property was about dev eloping wildlife habitat and harv esting elk and deer. What I realize m ore and m ore is, it's a place for fam ilies and friends to gather and dev elop a cam araderie that grows relationships far bey ond the hunt.

As m y daughter, m om and I rounded the corner in the road, I told them when we were set up, the elk would likely be m ov ing from right to left across the m eadow we were going to watch. As I explained "the plan", m y m om pointed ahead and said "there are two elk right there" running from left to right, obv iously not aware of m y plan or m y am azing acum en as an elk hunter. More elk followed and as m y daughter decided they were too far for her to shoot, I shot the last one still in the clearing. After m y shot, m ore elk appeared quickly , m uch closer from the left until 80 anim als stood in front of us, including a beautiful 6 x6 that m ost of us would dream to m ount on the wall. My hunt was done and m y daughter, Casey , had m ore interest in watching the herd for the next 2 0 m inutes than harv esting the big bull. The three of us sat watching and v isiting as the herd m ov ed slowly towards tim ber. This special tim e is the m om ent m y daughter will talk about with her children and grandchildren 4 0 y ears from now, and how those generations will understand m y m om as the special m other and grandm a we hav e known and lov ed.

My brothers showed up later as I was finishing field dressing the elk and helped load her into the pickup after a photo session with all three generations sharing in the experience of our adv enture. The fact m y m om had to spot elk for m e to shoot was not lost on them , and I am sure the factual story m ay change in our retelling as m y fam ily once again shakes their heads at baby brother and how m om fav ors m e.

That's ok. It is all part of the continuing history of m y fam ily and the special tim es spent on our Montana ranch. It is a testim ony to what is waiting for y ou.
