Wyoming has a long history of conserving wildlife. Here's a rundown of how that was manifested:

First Hunting Season

Legislature sets first hunting season. Language supports hunting for food.

Board of Fish Commissioners Est.

Board of Fish Commissioners established as fish populations drop, "sterile streams" reported.

Act To Protect Wildlife

Seeing the impact of unregulated hunting, the Wyoming Territorial Legislature approved an act to protect wildlife at their first meeting.

Increase In Trout

In a report to Governor Warren, Fish Commissioner reports an increase in trout.

1890

State Game Warden

Legislature authorizes two fish hatcheries and also makes the Fish Commissioner the State Game Warden. He deputizes county officials.

Low Populations

Last wild bison shot in Wyoming Territory. Antelope at levels near 5,000.

Sportsmen Set the Bar

Same report: Sportsmen's clubs are curbing illegal take of fish and game. These clubs are biggest supporters of Commission's work.

Teddy Roosevelt Visits Wyoming

Hunting Licenses Issued

6,400 resident hunting licenses issued. 123 nonresident.

Conservation Strategy

Legislature establishes a conservation strategy, part of it designated Wyoming's 1st Game Warden. The strategy becomes "a model for the country."

Elk Transplants

The only elk in lower 48 are in Yellowstone and around Jackson. Elk transplants by train take place.

Game Warden estimates non-resident hunters from all over the world are spending $500,000 in Wyoming.

Funding given to Game and Fish Commission

The Legislature turned over management of funding of Game and Fish to the Commission. The revenue from sportsmen then goes to Game and Fish Operating Fund.
