Julian Buchanan was at the time of the publication an academic at Glyndwr University in Wales and Steve Wilson an academic at Washington University. In 2007 all three of us were interested in experimenting with a new teaching platform. We collaborated and were able to show how students from three countries could take a common course using a Virtual learning environment. The concept and activity was successful enough to warrant a publication that was two pronged. It showed the success of the virtual learning environment and perspectives of students across three countries on Race Hate Crime. The second publication discusses critically challenges and benefits of living in residences. However the challenge of safety emerged strongly as a stumbling block in student learning.
