Rector's Message

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Once again the sin of racism has reared its ugly head. What we saw in Charlottesville, Virginia was evil unmasked, culminating in a deadly act.

But let us remember that something else was present in Charlottesville: the power of collective resolve and love. The Spirit of God is at work in our world and will prevail. The evil of racism is real, but it is not stronger than God's love embodied in the lives His people. We cannot expunge the sin of racism from our past and present, but we can redeem it.

Jesus asks us to place the needs of others before our own and he tells us that we are to be one another's servants. The idea that anyone is inferior because of race is antithetical to Jesus' teaching. Whenever someone shouts "White Power!", he might as well be shouting "Crucify Him!" and whenever someone raises a hand in a Nazi salute she might as well be raising her hand to nail Jesus to the cross.

Racism is a radical sin that divides the human family and denies the new creation of a redeemed world. As our nation moves forward, let us pray and work for a radical transformation, in our own minds and hearts as well as in the structure of our society.

Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move every human heart [and especially the hearts of the people of this land], that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

From the Book of Common Prayer

The Rev'd Kevin S. Brown elected 11th Bishop of Delaware

"Kevin, we welcome you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood." Holy Baptism, The Book of Common Prayer, p. 308

These words from our liturgy for Holy Baptism, words proclaimed to the newly baptized and their family by all the people gathered to join in the journey of God's love by faith, feel so right to welcome our newly-elected bishop to the Diocese of Delaware, the Reverend Kevin Brown. These are words of covenant moving forward as the Delaware branch of The Jesus Movement, together ... BUT not quite yet!

While we stand together "on the tiptoe of expectation," to quote St. Luke, our newly-elected bishop will not be in the diocesan office tomorrow, or next week, or for a while. There are still "things to do" in the episcopal call and election journey for him and for us, such as ...

A medical and psychological evaluation is to be scheduled and completed, with results sent to the Presiding Bishop. Once completed and affirmed, THEN ... We send our Letters of Consent to the all diocesan Standing Committees in the Episcopal Church, and the Presiding Bishop seeks consent from the bishops of our Church. THEN we await receiving consents from a majority of the Standing Committees and the bishops. Once this has been completed and confirmed, THEN ... We receive notification from the Presiding Bishop that the ordination and consecration scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Delaware State University is to be planned, and THEN ... The Transition Committee teams go to work on all the elements necessary for worship and celebration on this day, all the while working with Kevin and family in preparing for their move to Delaware and their new home at Bishopstead, completing details of the Letter of Agreement, and all those

myriad of things needed to share radical hospitality in helping them to make their place at our table easy and joyful to join us. So, with all this considered, it is our HOPE that Bishop-elect Brown will be officially with us on or before All Saints Day, November 1. Now here is where our mutual radical hospitality joins together.

I suspect we all have our desire to welcome our new bishop to the diocese and our First State. Maybe a few of us, just a few, would like to share about our ministry, our needs, and maybe, just maybe, be the VERY FIRST APPOINTMENT on their calendar for Monday, December 11. I am going to invite us NOT to do this, but simply to offer a welcoming stance to Bishop-elect Kevin Brown, his wife Caroline, and their daughters. Send your notes of welcome to their attention at the Diocesan Office, 913 Wilson Road, Wilmington DE 19803. If you need to email your greetings, send them to bishop@ without expectation of response. Simply offer the gift of grace and hospitality in welcome and share with us in Christ's eternal priesthood. We will have many days, weeks, months, and years ahead in forming, shaping, and sharing this ministry as our part and place in The Jesus Movement.

So, welcome Bishop-elect Kevin Brown, and to quote a favorite theologian in my life journey, Dr. Seuss ... Oh, the places we will go!

Grateful always, your servant in Christ,

Paul+

The Reverend Paul W. Gennett, Jr. President of The Standing Committee The Diocese of Delaware

Garden and Grounds Update

Many of you have been so helpful in the ongoing work of keeping our gardens and grounds lovely and trim. We are looking for volunteers to serve on a Garden Guild that will continue to beautify the Secret Garden located behind the Academy as well as the entire Church Yard. Much planning and a good bit of labor have gone into making the gardens what they are now but we need help! If you are able to be a part of this ongoing project please contact Bob Davis or the Rector and thanks in advance for your interest!

There are a couple of needs for volunteers for Outreach efforts for the next two months.

? For August, we are going to need several volunteers for this week -Friday, August 18th to go to Emmanuel Dining Room at 2nd and Jackson. This is an urgent need ? For September, three of our outreach efforts occur on the same day- September 18th. We will be serving at Emmanuel Dining Room, Wilmington and Rogers Road, as well as providing for Meals on Wheels.

There is again a need for volunteers for these outreach efforts. If you are able to volunteer for any of these ministry efforts, please contact Bob Irwin at 302354-4636 or e-mail at rjirwin09@.

Our partnership with Ministry of Caring's Emmanuel Dining Room is one of our oldest Outreach Ministries. We currently partner with Jackson Street (2nd and Jackson Streets) in Wilmington and 500 Rogers Road (in the DeLaWarr State Service Center), New Castle. At the 2nd and Jackson location, we serve lunch on the 18th of every month to about 190 men, women, and children. Learn more about Ministry of Caring's Emmanuel Dining Room at the website . Serving 300 meals a month takes a good amount of work to shop for food, prepare, and serve the meal. This effort is sustained through the work of Immanuelians, who have made a commitment each month to insure that this ministry is a success. This ministry each month not only enriches the lives of our brothers and sisters seeking an immediate relief of their suffering through a nutritious meal and some kindness, but also those who serve. The challenge is to sustain this process every month.

Immanuel Singers Go Big Time!

Several Immanuel choristers spent the final week of July in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, attending the King's College Choir Course of the Royal School of Church Music, where they were part of a 200-voice choir spending six days together as an intentional community, rehearsing, singing, eating, and playing together.

Representing Immanuel on the Green were four members of the Ross Choir and three adults: Bob Davis contributed his skills and experience to the tenor section; Melanie Samardza served as Course Nurse; and Jack Burnam was Housemaster for the "Adult House," rehearsing nearly 100 professional and amateur choristers ages 18 to 86. Led by guest music director Richard Tanner from the historic Rugby School in England (yes, that's where the game was invented), we enjoyed some truly transcendent music-making!

The Ross Choristers who attended provided glowing reviews. Gabi Cortada described the course as "100% epic. The food was spectacular, but the best part was singing." Ian Morton was nervous at first to be away from home. "But by the end of the week," he said, "I didn't want to leave." Ella Morton said, "I wasn't used to the sound of a giant choir but I loved it." She also liked swimming "because the pool was fourteen feet deep." Tom Plant said he loved the whole week, especially learning to play pool. "I made a lot of friends, and I'll definitely come back next year to see them again."

You can see pictures from our week and listen to sound clips at the Course's Facebook page:

The Ross Choir: An Opportunity for Children in Music and Ministry

The Ross Treble Choir offers a unique opportunity for children ages 7 ? through high school to learn, enjoy, and master choral music while participating in an important ministry of Immanuel Church. The Ross Choir is not just another "children's choir." Under the careful instruction of veteran Choirmaster Jack Warren Burnam, these young singers learn the fundamentals of singing: posture, breathing, pitch matching, tone production, and reading music. This valuable musical education, leading to a lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of music, is offered without cost. Members of the Ross Choir attend regular weekly practices and sing for services and special events every four to six weeks. Choristers need not be Episcopalian or a members of Immanuel. Interested? Contact Jack Burnam directly at 302-559-9696; or by email at jwburnam@
