By Melanie Jo Triebel i Comstock/Comstock/Getty Images The huge number and variety of Internet services on the market today can be overwhelming even to savvy customers. Although you have many different questions about the various types of Internet service available in your area, the ultimate question is how fast the service is. FiOS, with its fiber-optic technology, has a clear edge in speed over cable in general. Verizon's FiOS Internet service is a form of high-speed digital Internet, otherwise known as broadband Internet. FiOS is different from other Internet services, however, in that it's delivered on a network of fiber-optic cables. Although some major service providers use a combination of fiber-optics and coaxial cables, FiOS is an entirely fiber-optic network. Cable Internet service, like fiber-optic Internet, is a type of broadband Internet service. Just as it sounds, however, cable Internet is delivered using the network of cables used to provide cable television service. The digital Internet service is simply conveyed through the network of coaxial cables already in place. FiOS currently offers four speed tiers, priced accordingly. The tiers are 15/5 megabytes per second, which means 15Mbps downloads and 5Mbps uploads; 25/25Mbps, 50/20Mbps and 150/35Mbps. Verizon claims the speeds are consistent even at peak hours, but your results may differ. And Verizon FiOS customers have the potential to have connections free of throttling -- or slowing down Internet speeds for heavier users -- or boosting -- giving users a high speed at the beginning of a large download, then a slower speed for the remainder. In 2010, and the four years prior, dubbed FiOS the fastest Internet in the U.S. Cable Internet speeds vary by provider, plan and even by time of usage, as peak hours can be slower. Cable Internet speeds can range from 1.5Mbps upwards. Many cable Internet providers offer speeds of up to 12Mbps, 15Mbps or even higher speeds. The average cable Internet speed, however, is around 3Mbps. reported that two cable companies took the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for speed under FiOS in its 2010 test. In reality, users performing basic online functions -- sending and receiving emails, loading Web pages, and the like -- will be unlikely to notice a difference between cable Internet and Verizon's FiOS service. Higher-volume Internet users, however, such as gamers and those who download large files, will see a significant difference. For example, a typical movie will be completely downloaded at FiOS' 50Mbps speed in the time it takes to download about one-third of the movie at cable Internet speeds. The way Americans buy cable TV is poised for a big change, according to Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam: The 300-channel bundles standard among many TV providers will be phased out over the next three to five years, and replaced by smaller, more customizable packages."People do not want 300-channel bundles and the economics won't work for that," said McAdam at Business Insider's Ignition conference today (Dec. 8).In April, Verizon FIOS began offering slimmeddown bundles to reach consumers who didn't want to pay for costly packages loaded with channels they don't watch. The custom TV packages average between 40 and 60 channels and now account for 40% of Verizon FIOS' subscriber volume, McAdam said."[Our custom TV] doesn't have all the heavy weight of these sports channels that you pay for whether you watch or not," said McAdam. "`Skinnying' down the bundle helps the profitability."McAdam also expects mobile to become a larger focus for providers as cable bundles slim down. Verizon recently launched Go90, a short-form mobile video streaming platform. Competitor AT&T is working on a competing streaming service and Comcast has a platform of its own aimed at cord cutters. While cable TV is a large part of Verizon's business, it's by no means the largest share. That distinction goes to Verizon's wireless business, which brought in $87.6 billion in revenue in 2014, according to an annual report. Broadband services are also big revenue generators.McAdam said Verizon invests about $18 billion a year in its wireless network, improving connectivity and adding services like 5G, which Verizon is slated to begin testing next year. 1 Items Left on the Shelves That Even COVID-19 Panic Buyers Didn't Want 2 How Many Zeros Are in One Million? 3 COVID-19 Terms: The Difference Between Social Distancing, Physical Distancing & More 4 Why Is the Keystone XL Pipeline Still So Disputed? 5 How Much Does a Boneless Chicken Breast Weigh? 1 How Many Women Are in the World? 2 What Two Coins Make 30 Cents and One of Them Is Not a Nickel? 3 Dolly Parton: The Surprising Life Story of the Queen of Country 4 These Are the Best-selling Cars of All Time 5 How Long Is a School Bus in Feet? 1 Flight MH370: The Vanishing Aircraft That Became Aviation's Biggest Mystery 2 What Are Graphic Packages? 3 Which Battery Is Equivalent to LR41? 4 The Biggest Lies About Diet and Fitness Fads 5 What Are Baby Snakes Called?
