There is a Christmas carol with the words "all this night my heart rejoices." So let me say to the parish of St. Jerome, "all this week my heart rejoices as I ponder in my heart the many ways in which you expressed your love for me." It is all very humbling and so I am filled with joy and gratitude.

It was a day of surprises as I was not allowed in the building from Friday night until right before Mass on Sunday. The hall was beautifully decorated with a Maine pine tree theme and bluebirds everywhere. (By the way, this year the bluebirds were gone from Waveny by the beginning of October.)

The day itself was filed with grace. The crowd at Mass reminded me of my early days in the parish when Church was full. The music was uplifting, and it was a great blessing to once again have Fr. Joe Palacino in our midst along with many of my priest friends. Fr. Joe looks great and was so happy to see everyone.

The reception was exceptional. My only regret was that I didn't get roasted enough. I deserved a lot more mocking than I got! I was moved by the testimonies, by the beautiful stain glass quilt, by the song from WICKED, by the book filled with pictures and kind words, by the many cards and gifts, by the food, by the hard work of so many people. I am told a cast of thousands worked on it, headed by Lorraine Larkin with Annette Maiberger.

Starting late this week, I will begin my thank you notes. So many people gave gifts and included kind words which I will keep forever. The experience was like being present at my own funeral and hearing people says good things about you.

g

So, I am in your debt forever and so happy to be staying with you, getting to watch all the good things that happen daily in this great parish!

TWEETS OF THE WEEK @Pontifex "The Lord gives us each a vocation, a challenge to discover the talents and abilities we possess and to put them at the service of others."

@BishopCaggiano "To live is to change and to seek perfection is to change often." - Saint John Henry Newman. "I cannot count how many times I have gained consolation from this simple insight. For as I face my faults and failures, I can hear Newman speaking to my heart, asking me to avoid being discouraged but instead, seeking for ways to change my life, one choice at a time."

@JamesMartinSJ "Gospel: Today a Pharisee critiques Jesus for not following the ritual washing before meals (Lk 11). But Jesus here is less concerned with rituals and more with the disposition of the heart. Rituals and regulations are important for religious organizations. Love is more important.
