Update: Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina

Two Entergy Power Plants Reportedly Damaged by Rita

Industry sources told Platt’s that two of Entergy Corp's power plants, the 1,890 MW oil- and gas-fired Sabine plant and the 425-MW RSCogen plant, were damaged by Hurricane Rita and went off-line due to the storm. Entergy said it has 14 units in the area affected by Hurricane Rita and that 12 units were now off-line.



Bunkering Activity Resumes in New Orleans and Houston

Although bunkering operations resumed in the two ports, congestion is reported. The Port of New Orleans is also not going to be back to full operational capability for many months.





Waiver of Jones Act Extended Until October 24

An extension (to October 24) for the waiver of the Jones Act was signed Monday by DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff. The waiver, initiated after Hurricane Katrina, allows foreign shipping vessels to transport petroleum and refined petroleum products between domestic ports. Department of Energy Secretary, Samuel Bodman, commented, "In the aftermath of these two hurricanes, the administration remains committed to using the tools at our disposal to ensure our nation's fuel markets remain well supplied.”

Power Generators in East Having Problems Getting Natural Gas

The problem stems from the lack of natural gas coming out of the Gulf Coast at present.

Substation Fire Caused Power Outage to 10,000 Customers in Texas

About 10,000 Austin Energy customers lost power due to a fire at the Howard Lane substation early Tuesday. All power was restored by 6 a.m.



Exelon's 1,163 MW LaSalle 2 Nuke in Illinois Reduces to 60 Percent

The company trimmed output last night to repair a drain valve.

San Antonio City Public Service’s 415 MW JT Deely Coal-fired Unit 1 in TX Shut September 26

The utility said it was investigating vibration problems on the boiler feed pump turbine when the turbine tripped, causing the unit to trip.

The unit shut on September 22 to repair a reactor coolant pump.

Several Refineries Shutting to Install Clean-Fuel Units

The Toledo Blade reported that BP shut down a portion of its Toledo, Ohio, oil refinery to install equipment allowing the plant to meet produce the new Ultra low sulfur gasoline and diesel. It will be offline until the end of October. Two other refineries in Ohio, Sunoco's 150,000 barrel-a-day plant in Oregon and Valero's 170,000 barrel-a-day plant in Lima, are also having clean-fuel units installed, the paper said

Occidental to Make First Shipment of Libyan Crude Oil to U.S in 20 Years

Occidental Petroleum Corporation is making its first shipment of Libyan crude oil to the U.S. market in 20 years. The lifting of economic sanctions on Libya, which were in place for nearly 20 years, allows approximately 900,000 barrels with an API gravity of 36 degrees and low sulfur content to be delivered to the United States.



Chevron Resumes Oil Production at Nigerian Facilities

After shutting both of its Nigerian facilities due to militia threats, Chevron Corporation announced today that it has restarted production at both oil platforms. Production of 27,000 barrels per day has resumed. Chevron expects to have an additional 60,000 bpd into production by early next year, with all output resumed by early 2007.



IEA Says 42-45 Million Barrels of Fuel Stocks Released to U.S.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Tuesday it had released 42 to 45 million barrels of fuel stocks out of 60 million offered after Hurricane Katrina swept through the U.S. Gulf.

First Oregon Proposal for LNG Terminal to be Reviewed by FERC

This Thursday, FERC will review the first of several proposals for LNG Terminals in Oregon. The first proposal is from Northern Star Natural Gas for a $520 million LNG receiving terminal in Bradwood, Oregon.
