33RD Latimore Valley Fair to be held June 23, 24, 25, 2017

Summer just wouldn't be summer without the annual Latimore Valley Fair--a true country festival with antique car, race car, drag car, hot rod and muscle car exhibits. The wonderful tractor parade is scheduled each day, too. We will have fair events all weekend, which include: Games, Bingo, Thirteen tabs, excellent Food, Entertainment every day, live Bands, Church Service, Crafts, Chinese Raffle, Duck Race, and Flea Market areas.

New this year: the Carroll County 4H Rabbit and Cavy club is bringing their agility course trained rabbits on Saturday. Watch them maneuver the obstacles, then visit the petting area. They may bring larger animals, too. SATURDAY TRACK TIME

Track time for the antique race car exhibition will be Saturday from 11:30-3 PM. There's no track time on Sunday, but we hope owners and drivers stay at the fair to display race cars to the Sunday visitors. SUNDAY CAR SHOW

Sunday we will be having a car show including race cars, classic cars, hot rods, etc. It's not your usual boring car show-- awesome pin striped bowling pin awards, live music, great food and entertainment for the whole family. CONCESSIONS

We will be selling sodas and merchandise from our EMMR stand in the green building in the infield. Bricker's, the Lion's club, the Pretzel Lady, Route 30 Seafood and ice cream trucks inside and outside the track are a few concessions that will be present at the Fair. New this year: Blazing Swine BBQ on the infield and Poppa J's, serving breakfast and lunch/dinner in the tractor area. RECREATIONAL AREA and CAMPING

Don't forget if you're planning to camp at the fair, you

need to have an assigned camping space, plus YOU HAVE TO HAVE A CURRENT EMMR MEMBERSHIP which is $20.00. Memberships will be verified before camp spots assigned/paid for this year. VENDORS Vendor space rental is $30.00 per space for the weekend. We will have a car-related flea market along with our

crafts and racecar items. WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOUR HELP! The Latimore Valley Fairground committee and our volunteers work very hard getting ready for the fair. If you would like to help prepare for the fair, or if you happen to be one of our members who is camping during the days prior to and during the fair and looking for something to do, please contact Amy Kelly at (717) 630-0776 or akelly537@. FREE HELP WILL NOT BE TURNED DOWN! Our members who camp at the fair have been doing their required service hours and more. The fair does run much smoother and everyone gets a chance to enjoy it if we all take a turn--please volunteer to help out with various jobs throughout the fair. PLEASE fill out the VOLUNTEER Form on page 2. The volunteer book can be found at the museum lobby until the Sunday before the fair. We will be getting ready for the fair starting Sunday, June 21st. If you're unsure how you can contribute, please meet with us between 12 noon and 6 pm Sunday June 18th. Also, listen for the announcements about urgent help needed during the fair. WE NEED RAFFLE ITEMS! One of our biggest moneymakers and popular attractions at the fair is our nightly raffle. If you have an item please contact Amy Kelly and let her know, drop it off at the museum on a weekend or just bring it to the fair.

FROM THE

PRESIDENT

Well the Thursday night work parties are history and I want to thank all who came out to help. They built shelves, repaired small leak in roof, moved cars, cleaned cases, and moved into the new Rasp building addition.

There was 15 to 25 volunteers came out each Thursday night from January through March, and I want to thank them for their help.

The April 1st roundtable and the next day's open house and ribbon cutting were well attended.

I want to thank Darwin Doll and his guests of the Charlie Seabrook, Pee Wee Wallace, Bruce Shaw on Saturday and Lance DeWease and Davey Brown for their presence on Sunday. Thanks also to Dan Worley, Frank Carelli, and Greg Egan for their part in the ribbon cutting.

We are in need of volunteers for Saturdays and Sundays for the museum. Come out and help and you never know who may walk through the door!

The Gary Wolford Fish Fry will be

history when you receive this letter, but

the Jalopy Showdown is May 20 and on

May 21 E.J. Kowalski will be at the

Museum for the Roundtable and talk of

Roaring Roadsters in drag racing.

Should be a good one.

Nancy Miller

We will be getting ready for the fair

President, EMMR June 23, 24, 25 featuring games, cars,

food, and music.

Our EMMR members and their vin-

tage race cars will be hitting the local tracks again so

check the yellow schedule for those events.

Again, thanks to all the volunteers who make this

museum possible. Join us and you'll make new friends.

When you are 20 you care about what everyone thinks,

when you are 40 you stop caring what everyone thinks,

and when you are 60 you realize no one was thinking

about you in the first place. --Winston Churchill

FROM Lynn Paxton CURATOR

I want to thank all the volunteers for

their help during our Thursday night work

parties. We did a lot of work to make our

museum better.

I also want to thank Lobar, Inc. for doing

a great job on our new expansion: The

Charles Rasp addition. We will finishing up Lynn Paxtor

outside over the next few months.

Curator

On a sad note, we lost some friends these

past months. George Wolfe was one of the original helpers

in getting Latimore Fairgrounds and the museum under-

way. He was the husband of Kay Wolfe who helped start the

Latimore Valley Fair and was the EMMR secretary for quite

some time. He will be missed by many friends and family.

Scotty Ausherman passed away at too young an age.

His car was completed and is in the museum.

Ree Smith passed away last summer and we are sad to

say, his wife Lynn passed this month. They were the par-

ents of Duaine and Mark Smith. Ree was my owner and

mechanic for many years and Lynn was a great lady. They

too will be truly missed.

One of our life members, James McClean of Braceville,

Ill. passed away in February 2017. James left two race cars

and racing equipment to EMMR. We haven't received them

yet so there will be more information later.

Roundtables on Sundays

Our roundtables have been filled for the rest of the year: July 16: Ed Zirkle ? Remembering Jim Strausbaugh. Aug 20: Remembering Tommy Hinnershitz Sept 16: Slide Presentation ? Reading and other speedways by Ken Johnson.

Our Open House in April was well attended. I'm glad Craig Agan made it in from Iowa to join us in the dedication of our new addition. Thanks to Darwin and his crew for a great turnout on Saturday. Don Robinson did a great job with our auctions as always. A special shout out to Judy and Pat for supplying the food for the weekend.

Finally I want to thank Frank Carelli, who will be leaving us, for all his time and input that he contributed to EMMR. Best of Luck!

See you at an upcoming event, check out the schedule.

--Lynn Paxton w 717-432-8188 or h 717-432-5522

Volunteering is Fun!

Youthful volunteers Madison and Shelton (great-grandchildren of Nancy Miller) assisted during the Auction at the Open House in early April. You are never too old or too young to volunteer at EMMR-- there are lots of different ways to help.

EMMR Members and Their Cars

John Miller #9

The silver number 9 was designed by Floyd Donnely and Ralph Wolfe on a napkin at the 1971 Sportsman Banquet. The car is a 30 by 90 sportsman with frame by Donnley. When completed, the car became the Wolfe Bros. Special and was driven by George Wolfe and Fred Putney when he won the point championship 1972, then in the 1973 season Fred was second in points.

The car became the Wolfe-Epply car in 1974 when Fred Putney was second in points to Jim Wilber. Fred raced two races at Flemington, New Jersey and wrecked in the first one and won the second one.

At the end of the 1974 season the car was sold to Rich Eichelberger and raced as the number 8. Eventually the car was acquired from Diz Dean by John Miller of Carlisle and was restored by Darryl and Dale and John Miller. The car did not race after that, however the number 9 still participates in track time with the Williams Grove Old Timers/EMMR. See you at the track!

thanks for Donations

In on the March newsletter we asked for a donation of a 7000-lb trailer. We want to thank Gary Vandergrift of Mechanicsburg, Pa. for donating one to EMMR. In addition, on EMMR's Facebook page we asked if anyone had a laptop we could use in the library for viewing pictures that Steve Bubb is scanning. Thank you to Judy Freels who donated a laptop computer. Amazingly Steve has already scanned 12,000 photos that can now be viewed on the laptop computer in the EMMR library. Steve has many more photos to scan, and they will be added to the laptop as they are completed. EMMR is blessed to have many generous members and volunteers--thanks to all of you.

CORNER

CRAIG's

The most fulfilling part of my

involvements in preserving

Craig Agan Development, EMMR

motorsports history over the past 25 years has been the people I've met. Often drivers receive the

most attention from race fans,

but the many other interesting personalities com-

bine to make our sport so special. Charles Rasp

was one of those interesting personalities.

As I pen this column I am only back home for a week

from my quick visit to Pennsylvania for the 2017 EMMR

Spring Opening and the Grand Opening of the latest addi-

tion to the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. The entire

weekend was exciting and well-attended. The drag racers

took center stage on Saturday and the special guests they

had in attendance and the forums they coordinated were

top-notch. The new drag cars on display were famous and

wonderfully displayed.

On Sunday sprint car driver Lance DeWease and his

mechanic Davey Brown were the special guests for an

interesting and informative round table moderated by

Dave Hare. Dave was ready with a host of great questions

for the mult-time, multi-track champion DeWease. High

on the list was the record setting 2016 season DeWease

had with car owner Donald Kreitz Jr. and Brown. As usual

there was much good-natured ribbing between DeWease

and Lynn Paxton which resulted in a lot of laughter for all

in attendance. Davey Brown is held in such high regard by

the sprint car community that it seemed there was a

respectful silence among the crowd whenever he was asked

a question. Thanks to everyone for a great afternoon!

The official ribbon cutting for the Charles Rasp addition

was Sunday afternoon before the round-table. I'm sure I

didn't know Charlie nearly as well as many of you, but I still

count myself fortunate to have been able to spend a little

time with him the last few years. Lynn Paxton has a stand-

ing dinner date with a few friends on Thursday evening and

Charlie was a part of that group. Charlie, like his brother Kenny before him, was a strong supporter of the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. My first awareness of the Rasp brothers was because of the beautifully restored antique motorcycles donated by them and displayed at EMMR. They were exquisite craftsmen and we are in their debt for the many perfectly restored bikes.

When Charlie Rasp witnessed the ever-increasing amount of items donated to the museum he approached Lynn Paxton with a plan. He would put a sizeable bequest in his will if the museum would use it for another museum addition. The new addition was tabbed to be predominately used for "staging," that is, a place for all new donations to go while they could be categorized, sorted, and prepared for display. The Rasp area will also house the rolling stock that is both coming and going, allowing the volunteer staff to be much more efficient while positioning the many priceless motorsports vehicles. I hope you will all join me in saying a big thank you to Charlie and Kenny Rasp. They join many others whose past support make the Eastern Museum the fantastic place that it is, and are now working from that big restoration shop in the sky!

I would also like to use the example set by the Rasp brothers to challenge all of us to continue to look for ways to support the EMMR. The efforts by many of the EMMR members in donating your volunteer time and resources is recognized and truly appreciated. But for those who have not had the opportunity yet to help to the level they would like, just say yes! Remember, many times a properly planned bequest using appreciated assets can be very important to the museum while having a very small net impact on your total estate. Call me at 641-891-0445 with additional questions. Thanks.

AACA News

Spring is in the air and that means it is time to get our cars ready for some long awaited driving time. Most of us try to run and use the Antiques as much as possible but do not like to get the road salt on them. Dry weather use only keeps problems away.

Antique & Classic Auto & Truck Show June 10 The Gettysburg Region will be having our 42nd annual

Antique & Classic Auto & Truck Show & Flea Market at Latimore Valley Fairgrounds on Saturday June 10th 2017.

This year's feature vehicle will be all military vehicles. Anyone having a military vehicle is welcome and AACA membership is not required to register. There are blue registration flyers in the Museum at several locations. Help yourself and read carefully to register and for times. As always we have good food for your enjoyment. This show is always a fun day, so bring family

& friends and join us on June 10th to relax for the day. Do not forget the car shows during the Latimore Valley Fair June 23-25, 2017. This is also a fun-filled event with much to do and see. Don't forget to volunteer some time at the fair to make the workload easier on everybody involved.
