MAINTENANCE MECHANIC POSITION

The City of South Portland is currently seeking a mechanically competent professional to serve as a full time Maintenance Mechanic to join our Water Resource Protection team. This position performs skilled, and semiskilled, technical and manual tasks critical to the efficient operation and control of the South Portland Wastewater Treatment Plant, Wastewater pumping stations and its support services.

The selected candidate will be part of a high functioning, detail oriented team working under the direct supervision of the Water Resource Protection Maintenance Supervisor. This is an entry-level position and a career opportunity to be part of one of the finest facilities in the state addressing water resource protection. The Maintenance Mechanic will be responsible for numerous tasks including the inspection, servicing, preventative maintenance, repair, and replacement of various mechanical components including, but not limited to, compression seal packing, mechanical seals, bearings in motors, pumps, valves, control systems, and specialty wastewater equipment at our treatment plant, and at multiple locations around the city, such as pump stations and CSO sites. The incumbent will also perform building maintenance functions at the plant and pump stations, as needed, in addition to some routine tasks such as mowing and snow removal.

Qualified applicants must have a strong working knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair practices, processes, methods and procedures as well as competent communication skills to work within our team. High School graduation or equivalent required, supplemented by one (1) year post-secondary College or technical training in industrial or automotive maintenance technology and one-year’s worth of experience in a mechanical field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience total totaling two years. Experience with computerized record keeping a plus. A valid State of Maine driver’s license is required. Candidates must have the availability to be on-call in rotation with other mechanics to be considered.

Hourly Pay range: $21.83-$24.88 per hour, depending on experience.
