Compound-Complex Sentences

A compound-complex sentence contains two independent clauses and one dependent clause (combine 1 compound and 1 dependent clause)

ex: Although I like to go camping, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with.

independent clause: "I haven't had the time to go lately" independent clause: "I haven't found anyone to go with" dependent clause: "Although I like to go camping... " ex: Even though he prefers to eat with a fork, he chooses to use chopsticks in Chinese restaurants; however, they aren't easy to use.

Warm-Up 13

Write 2 compound-complex sentences, 1 using an adverbial conjunction and 1 using a coordinating conjunction.

Commas

1. Separating elements in a series of 2+

ex: the fish, dog, and cat

2. Compound sentences (coordinating)

ex: The boy ran, and the girl jumped.

3. Setting off introductory elements

ex: Approaching second base, the boy fell.

4. Setting off parenthetical elements

ex: The Founders Bridge, which spans the Connecticut River, is falling down.

5. Separate coordinate adjectives

ex: The tall, distinguished, handsome man (if you can but an "and" or a "but" in between, a comma usually works)

6. Quotations

ex: "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make it true by saying it."

"I would like to buy a shirt," she said timidly. "Do you sell them?"

7. To show contrast

ex: Some say the world will end in ice, not fire.

8. To avoid confusion

ex: For most, the year is already finished. vs For most the year is already finished.

9. Complex Sentences

ex: If you run, you will make it on time.
