Criteria for Selecting Hymns

While many hymnals exist, and presumably therefore someone thought about which hymns to include or exclude, I know of no hymnals that have published their criteria (other than in the most general terms) for such inclusion or exclusion, and I surely know of none that have a companion volume explaining the rationale, hymn by hymn (though ... ................
