FLORHAM PARK SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB INFO

President’s Message

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It has been six months since I was elected President of the Senior Citizens Club. One issue that our Board has addressed, since my taking office, is obtaining insurance for the Club. On December 13, 2017, information regarding this policy was discussed with the Club's insurance broker, Peter Forde. The attendees at this meeting received details about how the policy provides coverage for the members, officers and trustees, and the separate entity, Senior Citizens Club of Florham Park, New Jersey.

I am most grateful to Olga Petrilak for scheduling this informational meeting at the center. It enabled us to learn about the Visiting Nurse Association of Northern New Jersey and the current programs that they offer. VNA speakers, Mary and Kaime, explained how home-bound seniors and care givers could obtain nursing services, doctor "house calls," and therapy. They also discussed certification and recertification to qualify for New Jersey or Morris County grants to improve home-bound circumstances, as well as, how to obtain transportation for medical reasons and other services that they or their care givers may need. I became aware of home-bound senior needs while serving on the Transportation Committee. In 2010, I used the VNA for post-surgery treatment with recovery and I was extremely delighted with their service at my home.

Two things I am looking forward to beginning in 2018 are obtaining a 501c3 status and beginning a transportation program. Our Club submitted the 501c3 application for approval to the IRS in November and I am anticipating it will be approved in 2018. Regarding the town sponsored transportation program, only nine people have signed up so far. A minimum of 25 persons need to be registered to launch the program. Program flyers can be found in the Senior Center. Please help us spread the word so it can begin in the new year!

IN MEMORIAM

Let us take a few moments of reflection for two men who have departed: Recent member,

Peter Bocage and Will Rummell, a long-standing member and former president of the Club.

TELEPHONE TREE

The Telephone Tree is used primarily for notification of the death of a club member or the member’s immediate family. This is done so that we can individually extend our condolences and attend local services. We also call in the event of the cancellation of a meeting, or some type of emergency heat or cold situation.

Our Telephone Tree starts out with three people: Eileen Cerrato, Rosalie Coll and Charlene Sozansky. To cover our entire membership, this trio each calls eight people who in turn call approximately five others. It would be most appreciated if one our new members would volunteer to be a caller. We are all volunteers doing a service for our members and many hands lighten the load.

If you are not being called or do not want to be called, please let me know so you can be added or removed from the list.

In case of the death of a club member or someone in the member’s immediate family, please call Charlene Sozansky at 973-822-3145. If she is not available, please advise Eileen Cerrato at 973-822-2296.

SENIORS HELPING SENIORS

We are currently assisting three families in our community with mostly gift cards. we will continue to put our "can" out at meetings and keep replenishing our fund for Seniors who may need a little help for food clothing, Thanks to all for your support.

QI GONG EXERCISE CLASS

Qi Gong class will be from January 12 through March 30, 2018. Qi Gong is a traditional Chinese mindful practice for cultivating and strengthening the body's vital energy. Also known as "Chinese Yoga" and "Meditation in Motion," Qi Gong is characterized by slow, graceful and flowing movements which gently stretch muscles, tendons and ligaments. This low-impact exercise system is performed with mental focus on the movements and the breath, resulting in greater awareness of the mind-body-breath connection.

Practicing Qi Gong regularly may have many positive health benefits, such as relaxing body and mind, enhancing mental focus and concentration, improving balance, coordination and body alignment and increasing energy levels. This practice promotes relaxation, health, a peaceful mind and a general sense of well-being. The slow, gentle movements of Qi Gong can be practiced by all age groups and can easily be adapted for the physically challenged. A sign-up sheet is in the back of this Newsletter

Valentine’s Day is Coming - February is American Heart Month

Celebrate your heart and recognize how hard it works for you. Show your heart some love now and throughout the rest of your life with these healthy [pic] aging tips.

• Be sweet — Instead of chocolate, try blueberries or strawberries. These heart healthy treats are filled with natural antioxidants that can help keep your arteries open.

• Move to the beat — Grab a partner and do some fancy footwork. Any activity that gets you moving — like dancing or walking — can help increase blood circulation, reduce stress, and protect your heart. (Join the Every Body Walk! campaign, .)

• Do your thing — Activities like painting, writing, yoga, and meditation can help slow your heart and breathing rates and lower your blood pressure.

• Avoid tobacco — If you do smoke, join a support group to help you quit and talk to your doctor about medications that can help increase your chances of kicking the habit. If you don’t smoke, then avoiding second hand smoke may also help protect your heart, lungs, and blood vessels.

• Maintain a healthy weight — If you are overweight, losing as little as 10 pounds can make a difference and lower your risk of heart problems.

Living a healthy lifestyle can help your heart stay strong, so you can live — and love — for years to come!
