“At the Y we are working diligently to help older adults remain healthy, active and independent,” says Michelle Taylor, Executive Director of the EDWARD L. GAYLORD DOWNTOWN YMCA.” The Y offers a variety of activities older adults can participate in and still have fun and be social in the process.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults need at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week and muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups. Only 11 percent of older adults meet strength training recommendations, which means that the vast majority of older adults are missing out on their opportunity to improve their health through exercise.

The YMCA of GREATER OKLAHOMA CITY offers many programs and classes to teach older adults how to exercise and eat healthy. The program allows older adults to continue to have a mission in their lives, a sense of direction and purpose. The Y offers many different activities including exercise, wellness programs, a SilverSneakers fitness program, day trips, health fairs and health screenings.
