Hi All,

93

Reading from Section 6 of the Addenda of HPB's Secret Doctrine...this also completes my reading of the fourth volume of the five volume written set (the 6th volume is but an Index).  The four volumes are all that HPB released in her lifetime as a two-volume set.  The fifth in my collection, is notes for what would've been a third volume...and that as I write comments to this, I've already started to read.

The day when the Church will find that its only salvation lies in the occult interpretation of the Bible, may not be so far off as some imagine. Already many an abbe and ecclesiastic has become an ardent Kabalist, and as many appear publicly in the arena, breaking a lance with Theosophists and Occultists in support of the metaphysical interpretation of the Bible. But they commence, unfortunately for them, from the wrong end. They are advised, before they begin to speculate upon the metaphysical in their Scriptures, to study and master that which relates to the purely physical -- e.g., its geological and ethnological hints. For such allusions to the Septenary constitution of the Earth and Man, to the seven Rounds and Races, abound in the New as in the Old Testaments, and are as visible as the sun in the heavens to him who reads both symbolically. What do the laws in chapter xxiii., v. 15, of Leviticus apply to? What is the philosophy of reason for all such hebdomadic offerings and symbolical calculations as: "ye shall count . . . . from the morrow after the Sabbath . . . . that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven Sabbaths shall be completed" (15), "And ye shall offer with the bread seven lambs without blemish" (18), etc. etc. We shall be contradicted, no doubt, when we say that all these "wave" and "peace" offerings were in commemoration of the Seven "Sabbaths" of the mysteries, which Sabbaths are seven pralayas, between seven manvantaras, or what we call Rounds -- for "Sabbath" is an elastic word, meaning a period of Rest of whatever nature, as explained elsewhere (Part II, "Sections on the Septenary.") And if this is not sufficiently conclusive, then we may turn to the verse which follows (16), and which adds, "even unto the morrow after the seventh Sabbath shall ye number fifty days" (forty-nine, 7 x 7, stages of activity, and forty-nine stages of rest, on the seven globes of the chain, and then  comes the rest of Sabbath, the fiftieth); after which "ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the Lord," i.e., ye shall make an offering of your flesh or "coats of skin," and, divesting yourselves of your bodies, ye shall remain pure spirits.

Forty-Nine is the number of Babalon and upon the seal of the A.'.A.'.  And it is into her Cup that one must pour all of one's life force; ones blood.

Crowley writes in Liber 333:

COMMENTARY ({Mu-theta})

49 is the square of 7.

7 is the passive and feminine number.

The chapter should be read in connection with Chapter 31

for IT now reappears.

The chapter heading, the Waratah, is a voluptuous scarlet

flower, common in Australia, and this connects the chapter

with Chapters 28 and 29; but this is only an allusion, for

the subject of the chapter is OUR LADY BABALON,

who is conceived as the feminine counterpart of IT.

This does not agree very well with the common or orthodox

theogony of Chapter 11; but it is to be explained by the

dithyrambic nature of the chapter.

In paragraph 3 NO MAN is of course NEMO, the

Master of the Temple, Liber 418 will explain most of the

allusions in this chapter.

In paragraphs 5 and 6 the author frankly identifies him-

self with the BEAST referred to in the book, and in the

Apocalypse, and in LIBER LEGIS. In paragraph 6 the

word "angel" may refer to his mission, and the word

"lion-serpent" to the sigil of his ascending decan. (Teth=

Snake=spermatozoon and Leo in the Zodiac, which like

Teth itself has the snake-form. theta first written {Sun} = Lingam-

Yoni and Sol.)

Paragraph 7 explains the theological difficulty referred

to above. There is only one symbol, but this symbol has

many names: of those names BABALON is the holiest.

It is the name referred to in Liber Legis, 1, 22.

It will be noticed that the figure, or sigil, of BABALON

is a seal upon a ring, and this ring is upon the forefinger

of IT. This identifies further the symbol with itself.

It will be noticed that this seal, except for the absence of

a border, is the official seal of the A.'.A.'. Compare Chapter

3.

It is also said to be the seal upon the tombs of them that

she hath slain, that is, of the Masters of the Temple.

In connection with the number 49, see Liber 418, the

22nd Aethyr, as well as the usual authorities.

Excerpt from

The Cry of the 22nd Aethyr, Which is Called LIN

LIN = ρωϖ  Ncx is Chassan, ruler of Air; also, Strength. 118 = 2 x 59. 59 = Brethren (referred especially to Lilith and Samael). LIN declares therefore the Twins concealed in Heru-Ra-Ha. 118 is also "to change, pass, renew" and "to ferment"; indicating the Formula of Horus; His first Formula is that of BABALON, for He is as yet within Her womb. But see note on 10th Aire, regarding PARAOAN.

Note on 10th Aire/ZAX:

The three Governors of this Aethyr, Lexarp, Comanan, and Tabiton, are drawn from the "little Black Tablet" of Spirit, which united the four watchtowers of the elements. (See Equinox I, No. VII, Plate III; facing p. 234). The one extra letter, L, is the eighth of the reversed letters beneath the bars of the Calvary Crosses in the watch-towers to form trilateral names which designate malignant forces. These letters are thus impurities introduced into the perfection of the Elementary Schema. (That they should be attributed to the element of spirit, which harmonizes and sanctifies the four, is a sublime mystery. The arcanum is declared --- as far as may be --- in this book 418 itself). The other 7 letters form the name PARAOAN, which is the central governor of the 22nd Aire; but here is a correspondence with I, the center letter of LIN; this Aire discloses the glory of the Table 7 x 7, which is pure spirit, the rose which is the heart of Babalon.

There comes first into the stone the mysterious table of forty-nine squares2.

2. See The Equinox, I, VII, page 231. This table contains the names of the Angels of the Seven Planetary Spheres: Shabathiel, Tzedquiel, Madimiel, Shemashiel, Negahal, Kokabiel, and Levaniel. This seven-fold arrangement is of the Sigil of A{.·.} A{.·.} Babalon. See Book of Lies, Cap. 49. And she is the Mother of Heru-Ra-Ha.

It is surrounded by an innumerable company of angels; these angels are of all kinds, --- some brilliant and flashing as gods, down to elemental creatures. The light comes and goes on the tablet; and now it is steady, and I perceive that each letter of the tablet is composed of forty-nine other letters, in a language which looks like that of Honorius; but when I would read, the letter that I look at becomes indistinct at once.

And now there comes an Angel, to hide the tablet with his mighty wing. This Angel has all the colours mingled in his dress; his head is proud and beautiful; his headdress is of silver and red and blue and gold and black, like cascades of water, and in his left hand he has a pan-pipe of the seven holy metals, upon which he plays3.

3. This "Angel" is in fact PAN. See the 9th Aire "unto All hath she born him."

I cannot tell you how wonderful the music is, but it is so wonderful that one only lives in one's ears; one cannot see anything any more.

Now he stops playing and moves with his finger in the air. His finger leaves a trail of fire of every colour, so that the whole Aire is become like a web of mingled lights. But through it all drops dew4.

4. This "dew" is the Supernal Lion-Serpent in his Menstruum of liquid Pearl.

(I can't describe these things at all. Dew doesn't represent what I mean in the least. For instance, these drops of dew are enormous globes, shining like the full moon, only perfectly transparent, as well as perfectly luminous.)

And now he shows the tablet again, and he says: As there are 49 letters in the tablet, so are there 49 kinds of cosmos in every thought of God. And there are 49 interpretations of every cosmos, and each interpretation is manifested in 49 ways. Thus also are the calls 495,

5. 42 is the number of the Demiurge (see Genesis I), of the Assessors of the Dead (see any book on Egyptian religion), of the Sterile Mother {HEB:Aleph}{HEB:Mem}{HEB:Aleph}, of Terror and Destruction {HEB:Heh} {HEB:Heh}{HEB:Lamed}{HEB:Bet}, of loss ({HEB:Yod} {HEB:Lamed} {HEB:Bet}), of the verb "to cease" ({HEB:Lamed}{HEB:Dalet}{HEB:Chet}), and of {HEB:Dalet}{HEB:Lamed}{HEB:Tzaddi-final}, the Earth of Malkuth. It is connected with the 10th Aethyr. See Equnox I, VII, pages 229-243, for the whole symbolism.

but to each call there are 49 visions. And each vision is composed of 49 elements, except in the 10th Aethyr, that is accursed, and that hath 426.

6. See Equnox I, VIII, pp. 99-128. [The 49 Enochian Calls]

All this while the dewdrops have turned into cascades of gold finer than the eyelashes of a little child7.

7. The Solar Child develops from the "Dew".

And though the extent of the Aethyr is so enormous, one perceives each hair separately, as well as the whole thing at once8.

8. These violations of Normal Logic are stigmatic of most of the higher types of Spiritual Experience. There must be no muddle; that is the usual mistake made by most Mystics. Confused thought is the evil and averse image of the One Clear Light.

And now there is a mighty concourse of angels rushing toward me from every side, and they melt upon the surface of the egg in which I am standing in the form of the god Kneph9,

9. The winged Egg, the omniform Zero (0x) from which all positive manifestation comes.

so that the surface of the egg is all one dazzling blaze of liquid light.

Now I move up against the tablet, --- I cannot tell you with what rapture. And all the names of God, that are not known even to the angels10,

10. This experience is perfectly clear and definite, to the peculiar type of higher consciousness which is aware of it.

clothe me about.

All the seven senses are transmuted into one sense, and that sense is dissolved in itself ...11

11. These are those of the Table itself, read across or down, instead of diagonally, as is done to obtain the names given in note 5, p. 32. See also LXXXIV (page 231).  [Liber LXXXIV vel Chanokh]

(Here occurs Samadhi.) ... Let me speak, O God; let me declare it ... all. It is useless; my heart faints, my breath stops. There is no link between me and P . . .12

12. Perdurabo, the Motto (in the Outer Order) of the Seer. Even below the True Consciousness with the material and intellectual basis of him.

I withdraw myself. I see the table again.

(He was behind the table for a very long time13. O.V.)

13. i.e. The Seer was in Samadhi; the Table had been a Veil of the Infinite.

And all the table burns with intolerable light; there has been no such light in any of the Aethyrs until now. And now the table draws me back into itself; I am no more.

There is also the "fiftieth" that HPB mentioned in the paragraph that started this post; wherein Blavatsky says:

"and then  comes the rest of Sabbath, the fiftieth); after which "ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the Lord," i.e., ye shall make an offering of your flesh or "coats of skin," and, divesting yourselves of your bodies, ye shall remain pure spirits. "

Correspondingly, there is the Qabalistic 50 Gates of Understanding, which compose the Ruach (Soul) bringing it to perfection in its Alchemical union with Spirit.  This is Immortality; the Ruach now reaching upwards instead of clinging to the trance of the lower ego.  This is a victory and best exemplified by Crowley's motto as Master of the Temple:

V.V.V.V.V. = Vi Veri Vniversum Vivus Vici = By the force of truth, I, while living, have conquered the Universe.

Returning to Blavatsky:

This law of offering, degraded and materialized with ages, was an institution that dated from the earliest Atlanteans; it came to the Hebrews via the "Chaldees," who were the "wise men" of a caste, not of a nation, a community of great adepts come from their "Serpent-holes," and who had settled in Babylonia ages before. And if this interpretation from Leviticus (full of the disfigured laws of Manu) is found too far-fetched, then turn to Revelation. Whatever interpretation profane mystics may give to the famous Chapter xvii., with its riddle of the woman in purple and scarlet; whether Protestants nod at the Roman Catholics, when reading "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH," or Roman Catholics glare at the Protestants, the Occultists pronounce, in their impartiality, that these words have applied from the first to all and every exoteric Churchianity, that which was the "ceremonial magic" of old, with its terrible effects, and is now the harmless (because distorted) farce of ritualistic worship. The "mystery" of the woman and of the beast, are the symbols of soul-killing Churchianity and of SUPERSTITION. "The beast that was, and is not, and yet is." "And here is the Mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains (seven continents and seven races) on which the woman sitteth," the symbol of all the exoteric, barbarous, idolatrous faiths which have covered that symbol "with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs" who protested and do protest. "And there are seven Kings (seven races); five are fallen (our fifth race included), and one is (the fifth continues), and the other (the sixth and the seventh races) is not yet come. . . . And when he (the race "King") cometh, he must continue a short space" (v. 10). There are many such Apocalyptic allusions, but the student has to find them out for himself. These five Kings were mentioned before.

Here is chapter 17 of John's Revelation:

17:1And there came one of the seven angels that had the seven bowls, and spake with me, saying, Come hither, I will show thee the judgment of the great harlot that sitteth upon many waters; 17:2with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and they that dwell in the earth were made drunken with the wine of her fornication. 17:3And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness: and I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet-colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 17:4And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations, even the unclean things of her fornication, 17:5and upon her forehead a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 17:6And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with a great wonder. 17:7And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and the ten horns. 17:8The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and is about to come up out of the abyss, and to go into perdition. And they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, they whose name hath not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast, how that he was, and is not, and shall come. 17:9Here is the mind that hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth: 17:10and they are seven kings; the five are fallen, the one is, the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a little while. 17:11And the beast that was, and is not, is himself also an eighth, and is of the seven; and he goeth into perdition. 17:12And the ten horns that thou sawest are ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet; but they receive authority as kings, with the beast, for one hour. 17:13These have one mind, and they give their power and authority unto the beast. 17:14These shall war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they also shall overcome that are with him, called and chosen and faithful. 17:15And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. 17:16And the ten horns which thou sawest, and the beast, these shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her utterly with fire. 17:17For God did put in their hearts to do his mind, and to come to one mind, and to give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God should be accomplished. 17:18And the woman whom thou sawest is the great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.

18:1After these things I saw another angel coming down out of heaven, having great authority; and the earth was lightened with his glory. 18:2And he cried with a mighty voice, saying, Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, and is become a habitation of demons, and a hold of every unclean spirit, and a hold of every unclean and hateful bird. 18:3For by the wine of the wrath of her fornication all the nations are fallen; and the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth waxed rich by the power of her wantonness. 18:4And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come forth, my people, out of her, that ye have no fellowship with her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: 18:5for her sins have reached even unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. 18:6Render unto her even as she rendered, and double unto her the double according to her works: in the cup which she mingled, mingle unto her double. 18:7How much soever she glorified herself, and waxed wanton, so much give her of torment and mourning: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall in no wise see mourning. 18:8Therefore in one day shall her plagues come, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judged her. 18:9And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and lived wantonly with her, shall weep and wail over her, when they look upon the smoke of her burning, 18:10standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. 18:11And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, for no man buyeth their merchandise any more; 18:12merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stone, and pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet; and all thyine wood, and every vessel of ivory, and every vessel made of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble; 18:13and cinnamon, and spice, and incense, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep; and merchandise of horses and chariots and slaves; and souls of men. 18:14And the fruits which thy soul lusted after are gone from thee, and all things that were dainty and sumptuous are perished from thee, and men shall find them no more at all. 18:15The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning; 18:16saying, Woe, woe, the great city, she that was arrayed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearl! 18:17for in an hour so great riches is made desolate. And every shipmaster, and every one that saileth any wither, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood afar off, 18:18and cried out as they looked upon the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like the great city? 18:19And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, wherein all that had their ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. 18:20Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, and ye apostles, and ye prophets; for God hath judged your judgment on her. 18:21And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down, and shall be found no more at all. 18:22And the voice of harpers and minstrels and flute-players and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft, shall be found any more at all in thee; and the voice of a mill shall be heard no more at all in thee; 18:23and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth; for with thy sorcery were all the nations deceived. 18:24And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all that have been slain upon the earth.

Let's compare this to chapter 7 of the Book of Daniel:

7:1. In the first year of Baltasar, king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream: and the vision of his head was upon his bed: and writing the dream, he

comprehended it in a few words: and relating the sum of it in short, he said:

7:2. I saw in my vision by night, and behold the four winds of the heavens strove upon the great sea.

7:3. And four great beasts, different one from another, came up out of the sea.

Four great beasts... Viz., the Chaldean, Persian, Grecian, and Roman empires. But some rather choose to understand the fourth beast of the

successors of Alexander the Great, more especially of them that reigned in Asia and Syria.

7:4. The first was like a lioness, and had the wings of an eagle: I beheld till her wings were plucked off, and she was lifted up from the

earth, and stood upon her feet as a man, and the heart of a man was given to her.

7:5. And behold another beast, like a bear, stood up on one side: and there were three rows in the mouth thereof, and in the teeth thereof,

and thus they said to it: Arise, devour much flesh.

7:6. After this I beheld, and lo, another like a leopard, and it had upon it four wings, as of a fowl, and the beast had four heads, and

power was given to it.

7:7. After this I beheld in the vision of the night, and lo, a fourth beast, terrible and wonderful, and exceeding strong, it had great iron

teeth, eating and breaking in pieces, and treading down the rest with his feet: and it was unlike to the other beasts which I had seen before

it, and had ten horns.

Ten horns... That is, ten kingdoms, (as Apoc. 17.12,) among which the empire of the fourth beast shall be parcelled. Or ten kings of the

number of the successors of Alexander; as figures of such as shall be about the time of Antichrist.

7:8. I considered the horns, and behold another little horn sprung out of the midst of them: and three of the first horns were plucked up at

the presence thereof: and behold eyes like the eyes of a man were in this horn, and a mouth speaking great things.

Another little horn... This is commonly understood of Antichrist. It may also be applied to that great persecutor Antiochus Epiphanes, as a

figure of Antichrist.

7:9. I beheld till thrones were placed, and the ancient of days sat: his garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like clean wool: his

throne like flames of fire: the wheels of it like a burning fire.

7:10. A swift stream of fire issued forth from before him: thousands of thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times a hundred thousand

stood before him: the judgment sat, and the books were opened.

7:11. I beheld, because of the voice of the great words which that horn spoke: and I saw that the beast was slain, and the body thereof was

destroyed, and given to the fire to be burnt:

7:12. And that the power of the other beasts was taken away: and that times of life were appointed them for a time, and a time.

7:13. I beheld, therefore, in the vision of the night, and lo, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and he came even to the

ancient of days: and they presented him before him.

7:14. And he gave him power, and glory, and a kingdom: and all peoples, tribes, and tongues shall serve him: his power is an everlasting power

that shall not be taken away: and his kingdom that shall not be destroyed.

7:15. My spirit trembled; I, Daniel, was affrighted at these things, and the visions of my head troubled me.

7:16. I went near to one of them that stood by, and asked the truth of him concerning all these things, and he told me the interpretation of

the words, and instructed me:

7:17. These four great beasts, are four kingdoms, which shall arise out of the earth.

7:18. But the saints of the most high God shall take the kingdom: and they shall possess the kingdom for ever and ever.

7:19. After this I would diligently learn concerning the fourth beast, which was very different from all, and exceeding terrible: his teeth and

claws were of iron: he devoured and broke in pieces, and the rest he stamped upon with his feet:

7:20. And concerning the ten horns that he had on his head: and concerning the other that came up, before which three horns fell: and of

that horn that had eyes, and a mouth speaking great things, and was greater than the rest.

7:21. I beheld, and lo, that horn made war against the saints, and prevailed over them,

7:22. Till the ancient of days came and gave judgment to the saints of the most High, and the time came, and the saints obtained the kingdom.

7:23. And thus he said: The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be greater than all the kingdoms, and shall

devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

7:24. And the ten horns of the same kingdom, shall be ten kings: and another shall rise up after them, and he shall be mightier than the

former, and he shall bring down three kings.

7:25. And he shall speak words against the High One, and shall crush the saints of the most High: and he shall think himself able to change times

and laws, and they shall be delivered into his hand until a time, and times, and half a time.

A time, and times, and half a time... That is, three years and a half; which is supposed to be the length of the duration of the persecution of

Antichrist.

7:26. And a judgment shall sit, that his power may be taken away, and be broken in pieces, and perish even to the end.

7:27. And that the kingdom, and power, and the greatness of the kingdom, under the whole heaven, may be given to the people of the saints of the

most High: whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all kings shall serve him, and shall obey him.

7:28. Hitherto is the end of the word. I, Daniel, was much troubled with my thoughts, and my countenance was changed in me: but I kept the word

in my heart.

The Merkabah tradition is the half and Liber 418 is the record of Aethyr Skryings (Apocalyptic writing) that is "thine art" that Crowley was directed to use to unite with, per AL:I.46-47:

AL I.46: "Nothing is a secret key of this law. Sixty-one the Jews call it; I call it eight, eighty, four hundred & eighteen."

AL I.47: "But they have the half: unite by thine art so that all disappear."

So that Thelemic Doctrine is the further expounding of a prophecy that begins with Daniel (probably the earliest known Apocalyptic writing), goes through John of Patmos and unto Dee&Kelly; then finally, Crowley.

Motta has said that Thelema is the true Christianity restored, which is interesting enough; considering the above and a chapter in HPB's controversial last volume to this tome, that I will soon be reading; entitled: The Book of Enoch: The Origin and Foundation of Christianity.
