Introduction - Creating Bright Futures | Kendal College

?Welcome to A LevelIntroductionBiology is the science of life in all its varied forms. During the course of the A level you will discover the inner workings of the cell right through to the complex interactions that occur within an Ecosystem. There is a lot of content to cover and being independently motivated to learn and read around your subject is key to gaining top marks in the exam, as well as for setting you up for your next steps. Below you will find a range of recommended material to engage with and some activities that you can have a go at in order to prepare yourself for the start of the course.Set Texts305752554737000The exam board (AQA) publish a set text which you are encouraged to purchase if you are able. We provide printed work booklets that contain notes and diagrams to accompany this and you will also make your own notes during sessions.AQA Biology A level Year 1 and ASBy Glen Toole and Susan TooleFirst teaching from Sep 2015ISBN-10:?0198351763ISBN-13:?978-0198351764Often you can get these second hand for a very reasonable price through Amazon Used and New or eBay.Recommended Viewing (Ctrl click images to open links):There are so many different programs to watch, available through many different platforms. Below is a list of programs from the BBC that should be widely available to all but you may well have access to many more. We look forward to hearing about what you have been watching over the summer. Anything involving Sir David Attenborough! Here’s a start.Similarly anything involving Professor Brian CoxHis ‘People of Science’ series is very good, you might want to consider the below episodes:Alexander FlemmingCharles DarwinAnd finally Michael Mosely is usually a good bet, particularly this series that I never get tired of watching (not for the faint hearted!): Podcasts and Youtube channels (Ctrl click images to open links):Below are a few Podcasts and Youtube channels that we use in the classroom and that our own students have recommended over the years. Feel free to dip into these and find your own favourites along the way.Start listening now or browse the back catalogue to find your favourite topics. My personal favourite is the interview with Jennifer Doudna about the development of the DNA cutting tool CRISPR. DNA Technology features heavily especially at A2.lefttopThe Infinite Monkey Cage covers lots of different science topics so have a scroll through to find things that interest you. This Youtube channel is often used by our students to help break down and visualise tricky topics. This is a fun channel that ensures a topic is examined from all angles. Avoiding bias is a big deal in Science, this will show you what that looks like and also get you thinking about the ethical and moral issues surrounding many modern scientific advancements.left254000left254000This starts on Monday 25th May and should be an interesting watch. Recommended reading:Once again this is just a start, you may well have your own recommendations and we’d love to hear what they are. The following books vary in their level of challenge but are great background reading for A level Biology:Summer challenge:Make a 3D plant or animal cell model, you can use anything you like but try to be creative. It needs to include the organelles listed below. Research their roles and where you would find them in the cell, their shape and structure. Include this information in your anelles to include:Cell-surface membrane, nucleus (containing chromosomes, consisting of protein-bound, linear DNA, and one or more nucleoli), mitochondria, chloroplasts (in plants and algae), Golgi apparatus and Golgi vesicles, lysosomes (a type of Golgi vesicle that releases lysozymes), ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, cell wall (in plants, algae and fungi), cell vacuole (in plants). Some examples: Take a picture so that you can share it with us at the start of term. ................
