College and University News: Capella University: Recent list of the recently hired faculty for Capella University' These faculty will assist the School of Public Service Leadership's Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Fire Services, and Leadership programs/specializations. Congratulations to all four faculty members. Dr. Heather StrouseDr. Heather Strouse holds a Doctoral Degree in Management of Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix, a Master’s Degree in Management of Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix, a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations from Capital University, and various certificates of training from the National Transportation Safety Board Academy. Heather’s professional career has encompassed over 10 years of experience in management and leadership positions, in the airline industry as Assistant Manager of Inflight Operations, Manager of Inflight Operations, Flight Operations Quality Assurance Auditor, Drug & Alcohol Manager, and Manager of Emergency Planning & Response. Heather developed the current emergency response program at PSA Airlines and assisted in revisions of the emergency response program at US Airways. As a keynote speaker Heather has presented at symposiums for the Federal Aviation Administration and the Regional Airline Association?Dr. Dan MartinDr. Daniel Martin, CEM, CFM is a managing principal of Integrated Solutions Consulting and has over 15 years of professional experience in the fields of environmental engineering, public health, and emergency management for public and private entities. Additionally, Dr. Martin has responded in various capacities to over twenty disasters including the 2001 World Trade Center Attacks, the 2004 Florida Hurricanes, and Hurricane Katrina. He has presented and authored on numerous comprehensive emergency management topics. Dr. Martin’s enthusiasm for and knowledge of the profession of emergency management and the effects of disasters on communities has led him to become involved in several professional organizations including the Foundation for Comprehensive Emergency Management Research, American Society of Civil Engineers’ Committee on Critical Infrastructure, The Infrastructure Security Partnership, and International Association of Emergency Managers. Dr. Martin sits on the IAEM CEM? Commission and American Society of Civil Engineer’s Committee on Critical Infrastructure. Dr. Martin is dedicated to fostering collaborative efforts to bridge the theoretical and practical applications of emergency management and dedicated to promoting the profession. Dr. Martin holds a PhD in Emergency Management, Masters Degree in Disaster Management, and a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Engineering Technology. Dr. Martin is a Certified Emergency Manager and a Certified Floodplain Manager?Dr. Philip Terry-SmithDr. Philip B. Terry-Smith, LPC., is in private practice as an executive and personal coach and organizational consultant. He has worked with many diverse populations and settings, noted for using creative approaches to help organizations and individuals meet and overcome challenges and have thus made a career of human service management and consulting. He has taught at all levels for the past 20 years in distance/ “non- traditional” and “brick and mortar” schools including a 10 year stint as a high school teacher. As a product of distance learning and he is most comfortable in that environment. Dr. Terry-Smith spent several years with the American Red Cross, 20 as a volunteer then on paid staff as Executive Director for D.C. and later Senior Director of Emergency and International Services for the National Capital region. In that capacity, he was responsible for the implementation of emergency services and initiatives for our National Capital and surrounding areas. He is a member of the ARC Critical Response teams locally and nationally and served as Mental Health Officer for the region. Experiences with the American Red Cross included being Shelter Director for hurricane Katrina and Rita evacuees displaced to the District of Columbia, Event Director for the World War II Memorial Dedication, and Job Director for the Presidential State Funerals. Other significant experience included: Coordinating Shift Lead for Mental Health Services/first responders care, for the September 11th Incident at the Pentagon and Assistant Officer for Mental Health, supervising mental health care for first responders/rescue workers at the World Trade Center “ground zero” Respite Centers. He also served on Special Response team at the Pentagon and is the only Disaster Mental Health provider to have served and supervised mental health care at both mass memorial services honoring the victims of those tragic events.He is on the Boards for the Atlas Performing Arts Center and APAC Manager and is a member of Leadership Greater Washington class of 2006, on the executive committee of his social organization and is a trustee and Sr. Clergy of his Temple. When not working or volunteering, Dr. Terry is in studio producing music or in theatre Directing. His love for music and technical gadgetry presents an avocation for which he is quite fond and earned him the moniker “Dr. Gadget”. He currently resides in Maryland with his spouse.Dr. Dean Larson Dr. Dean Larson had earned PhD, MA, and BS degrees from Purdue University and MS from the Naval Postgraduate School. Upon graduation from Purdue, he was commissioned in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Captain thirty years active and reserve service as a Special Operations and Surface Warfare Officer. Dr. Larson served as Manager, Safety and Industrial Hygiene, U. S. Steel Gary Works before he retired in 2003. He is a principal member of the NFPA Technical Committee for NFPA 1600 Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity and serves as Chair U.S. Technical Advisory Group and Head of the U.S. Delegation for the ISO TC 223 on Societal Security and heads the development of the first ISO standard for exercises and testing ISO/TC 22398. Dr. Larson is a Commissioner on the Indiana Emergency Response and the CEM? Commissions and holds Certifications as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Performance Technologist (CPT), and Certified Business Continuity Lead Auditor (CBCLA). He consults with Purdue University on emergency preparedness and business continuity and U.S. Steel on emergency preparedness and assessment of security and instructional projects.Emergency Management and Homeland Security News: Summer is in full bloom.
