So what

He¡¯s carrying an Army backpack

upside down and looks distressed.

Veteran or freeloader?

Maybe, on some off chance,

a shaman or something cool.

Maybe he can reveal that liminal space

between veteran and freeloader

because that seems to be

what¡¯s over everyone¡¯s heads,

just as the things he carries with him

that can¡¯t be precisely packaged¡ª

not in a backpack or labels

like ¡°veteran¡± or ¡°freeloader.¡±

Like you and me, he is

everything and nothing at once,

and I see us as such.
