The Joe Murphy Column - Elimar Pigeon S

The Joe Murphy Column

Good news from the doctor is that I do not have Diabetes; however I certainly have had a virus and on top to that I’ve been stressed and the combination of both has knocked me for six. I’m back at my work but only doing things at my own pace and at the time being I’m managing to get by day by day; however if it gets any worse then I have to go back to see my doctor. I thought I had salmonella and if I did then God only knows how our pigeons feel and it is little wonder so many youngsters get lost if they have this disease; believe me I was all over the place dehydrated; falling; loss of memory it was horrendous and something I will never forget believe me. This past week I have been trying to catch up on items that have built up over the past month or so and fanciers especially press officers will have to accept this while I catch up.

My I have been studying the SNFC channel results and only one partnership managed to time in all 4 channel races so I worked out a coefficient on this and the Joe Murphy Fancier of the year 2010 award winner; is E R Jamieson & J Hardie of Galashiels. Their information is as follows;

Race Birdage Position Win Co efficient

Ypres 1708 53rd open 2.9

Alencon 1187 57th open 4.8

Bourges 241 16th open 6.6

Claremont 1102 69th open 6.2

Total 4310 l 20.5

I have spoken to Eggy on the phone and would once again like to congratulate them on winning my award and I have also invited them to attend the Sporting Challenge annual presentation in the Hillcroft Hotel in Whitburn on Friday 5h of November 2010 starting at 19.00 hours.

Results

I’m going to try and catch up on the remaining old bird races that I have on file and then do the young birds next week if I can manage.

Angus Federation starting with Arbroath club news from my son Kevin Murphy who wrote; from the Witton Castle race which is a distance of 135 miles had 7 members sending 53 birds. In first place is club president Bill Dorward 926.72 with a grandson of Bonnie Lass crossed an Eddie Mann blood lines hen his winner was flying semi widowhood. In 2nd place is Kevin Murphy 925.86 with a yearling chequer cock flying on the roundabout. This cock won the 1st race from Arniston and is from the unrung Norman Black & Son of Northern Ireland cock when paired to a Jim Donaldson hen that I have mentioned throughout the season. Third place goes to Jim Peebles with a 2 year old hen flying on the roundabout she was bred by Joe McLeod from his own bloodlines when crossed with Bill Dorward’s Bonnie Lass x Eddie Mann lines.

From the Eastbourne race a distance of 419 miles, 5 members sent 41 birds; and the club members had a fantastic result with 8 birds making the SNFC result from an entry of 4200. 1st club, 11th section C 32nd open is Kevin Murphy with a velocity of 1275 he timed in a yearling cock – now named “Master Class” as the day of liberation Kevin was given the great news that he had passed his Masters of Science Degree in Management.  This is the same cock that got pipped at the post last week into second place and he was given his hen the night before basketing and was bred from the stock loft from the unrung Norman Black & Son of Northern Ireland cock when paired to a Jim Donaldson hen. In 2nd place are G & M Hosie with a velocity of 1236 they timed in a yearling bred from George’s own stock with the hen being an 2001 “sprinter” hen and the cock bred in 2005 containing Eddie Mann bloodlines. This yearling cock’s hen just laid prior to basketing. In 3rd and 4th places is Charlie Cameron his first bird is blue bar yearling cock and his nest position was sitting approx 4 days. His sire is Jos winner of 1st section C Newbury as a yearling and 2nd section C from the YB National. Dam is black hen who won 13th open Reims last week her previous best positions were 16th open SNFC Eastbourne as a yearling and 6th open SNFC Ypres as a 2 year old. Charlie’s 2nd bird is a red yearling cock that was also sent sitting approx 4 days. Sire is a Keith Bush cock and dam is a red chequer that won 57th open Falaise and is a grand daughter of Snowcap. For the record the other results were Charlie Cameron 70th and 148th open, Joe McLeod 182nd open and Kevin Murphy 180th and 304th open.

Witton Castle come back race from 135 miles 6 members sent 30 birds 1st & 2nd was Kevin Murphy with velocities 1303.81 and 1303.57 the first bird is a yearling pied hen sitting 10 day eggs with her cock away to the Ypres race. She is bred from a dark grizzle cock from Mike Binnie direct from Lenny crossed with a Jim Cullen hen who was bred from his a brother to his 2nd open SNFC Tours winner. The winner had 7 races as a young bird out to the young bird national from Leicester 280 miles where she won 230th Open.  Unfortunately she was injured prior to this years racing by a hawk so this is only her 2nd race this year. The 2nd pigeon is also a yearling blue cock sitting 10 day eggs from the John McCord Eaglesham Busschaert cock crossed with my good Braspenning hen.  He has shown consistency this year where he has won 5th Arniston, 3rd Witton Castle, 6th Ripon and 3rd Wakefield in the club.

3rd place goes to Joe McLeod with a velocity of 1287 his winner was a 3 year old bred from the best of Charlie Cameron’s Belgium stock pigeons. The Hexham come back race sees 1st club and 2nd federation going to Kevin Murphy with a velocity of 1650; this yearling blue hen was bred by Walker Kennedy. This hen was hawked at the start of the year and took a while to recover mentally from the attack. Her confidence around the loft picked up so she got a couple of training tosses then the Witton Castle come back last week then send to this race she was sitting 7 day eggs. In 2nd place is Charlie Cameron on 1645 he timed a black cock that was in the SNFC results from Newbury and Eastbourne as a yearling and also 2nd club Witton Castle; his sire is Jos 2nd section C Leicester SNFC as a YB and 1st section C SNFC Newbury as a yearling and is now at stock. The dam was Snowcap winner of 1st section C 4th open SNFC Reims. In 3rd place is Kevin Murphy on 1575 with a yearling hen being driven to the nest; she has not been raced a lot this year due to being paired to a cock going to Reims.  She is direct from the stock loft from the George Rankin & son Gareth stock cock when paired to an Arthur Evans NEHU hen purchased at his entire clearance sale; as a matter of interest this hen last year won a national diploma from the young bird national.

From the Clermont race the 1st 2nd and 3rd places went to Kevin Murphy; his winner was ‘Rocket’ winning 4th federation; 108th open SNFC winning a silver award

(3 section prizes from SNFC channel races) in fact this 2 year old cock has now won 5 SNFC diplomas from 6 races. Rocket was bred by our good friends Wullie Donachie and George Brown from Dundee and to say I was delighted timing him in to win his Silver Award would be an understatement. My 2nd bird also winning 6th federation was a yearling cock bred by Kevin Murphy from a grand daughter of Mystical Rose paired to a Mystical Rose crossed John Barnett & daughter cross; this cock nest mate flew Reims this year as a yearling so bears well from this pair of yearling who have both flown the English channel this year. The 3rd club and 9th federation winner was a 2 year old late bred from the stock loft. From the u Norman Black & Son of Northern Ireland cock when paired to a Jim Donaldson hen; therefore this cock is a full brother to Master Class winner of 32nd open SNFC Eastbourne see above.   Kevin would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the members of Arbroath Racing Pigeon Society to congratulate Charlie Cameron on a fantastic performance from Reims where he timed 3 pigeons on the night from 577 miles gaining 3rd, 13th and 51st open with another being timed in the next day 111th open.  Kevin was also 96th open in the same Reims race; and that concludes the old bird reports for this year.

Montrose news now from Graeme who wrote; the Witton Castle race result is as follows; in, Graeme 7 members sending 69 birds in 1st position on a velocity of 1417 is Jim Edwards with a blue chequer yearling hen flying to chipping eggs. This is the first time this hen has scored this season but as a young bird was in the clock 5 times. Her sire is a Jan Aarden and with this hens win he has now bred 12 x 1st placed winners, her dam is a Wildemeersch that was 1st Grampian Combine from Leicester in 2008. Jim is also 2nd on 1365 with another blue chequer yearling hen again flying to chipping eggs, she is a Busschaert bred from Sammy Richardson of Blythe and Joe Wright of East Hartford stock, both fly in the UNC. In 3rd position on 1361 is press officer Graeme Scott with a blue yearling cock sent driving he was bred by Gordon Mills from Berwick on Tweed, who flies in the Spittal club with the UNC. This cock was 2nd club Arniston this year and as a young bird scored at club and federation level. From the Clermont race only 4 birds were timed and I have included the details for all 4. 1st place and winning the Brown trophy was Willie Mac Knight with a 2 year old chequer cock sent sitting 17 days, this cock is home bred bird; the dam flew the channel 3 times and was 3 x 1st she is bred down from Putman pigeons Willie introduced a few years ago. He is also 2nd with another 2 year old chequer cock bred by Gordon Bell of Ballater and she was flying on the natural system and flying eggs about to hatch. In 3rd place goes to Gordon Campbell with his Les MacKay bred 2 year old mealy hen sent sitting 12 days, she has previously been placed this year 6th club Wakefield and 4th club, 8th fed from the Hexham come back race. The sire of this hen has been 41st open SNFC Alencon in 2008, and 12th Open SNFC Andrezel 2009. In 4th position is Graeme Scott with a yearling dark chequer hen sent sitting 14 days, she had previously been 6th club Eastbourne. This hen was bought as a young bird from the McGee / Tyerman Barcelona Challenge loft in Hernicourt in France. The Sire was bred by Paul Rennison of Worthing and the dam is a dark chequer bred by Harrison & Hull from Preston from “Tommy” and “ Narbonne Bombshell” and as you know Joe was the Barcelona challenge lofts 2nd bird home from the Barcelona race this year, verifications suggest that this pigeon is likely to  feature well up in the French national results and also the full International result. I hope you enjoyed your stay in France Joe.

The Hexham “come back” race saw 8 members sending 59 birds and in 1st position on a velocity of 1640 is Jim Edwards with a blue chequer yearling hen flying on the natural system to a young bird. This is the 2nd time this hen has scored a 1st prize this season having won last week’s race from Witton Castle. In 2nd position is Jim on 1624 with his 3 year old dark chequer cock sent sitting on eggs This good cock is bred from his Keith Richards of Bedlington and Sammy Richardson of Blyth stock and has won many good club positions including 5 x 1st and has also topped the Angus federation into the bargain. Third position on 1621 is Chris Hebenton with a yearling red hen bred by D & D Hay of Gourdon, the hen was sent spare as she had previously been split from her cock and this concludes the old bird reports for this year Joe yours Graeme whom I thank.

East of Scotland Gifford news from Malcolm Fowle who wrote; Hello Joe, catch up time from Newark the birds were up in a cold  north west wind and in 1st place is George Veitch on 1027 with a blue chequer yearling hen who topped the federation from Selby and finished 8th federation this week. In 2nd place is George Veitch with a blue chequer yearling hen on roundabout her sire bought from Dennis Dall; while the dam was purchased from Richard Combe. In 3rd place is Ben Veitch with his 4 year old blue bar white flight cock who is a big club & federation winner that I have referred to many times he is a Busschaert crossed Staff Van Reet. From Peterborough we had 61 birds sent with 1st place goes to McIntyre with a 3 year old blue bar Delbar cock that has been a consistent winner for the loft he made a mistake as a young bird returning in October of that year, and he was bred by the late J Smith of Prestonpans. In 2nd place is George Veitch with a blue bar yearling hen doing a velocity of 1235 she was raced on roundabout. Her sire an  un-rung gift bird from F Flockhart from Tranent while the dam is a J Ellis of Wellbank bought at late bred sale. 3rd place is R McIntyre with a 2 year old Wildermeech cross. From the Selby race the winner is George McCormack with a blue bar yearling; in 2nd place is Fowler & McIntyre with a blue bar yearling cock sitting 6 days his sire is a mealy cock bought as a squeaker from Dale Newcombe being a grand son of Regatta. The dam is a blue chequer being a grand daughter of Dennis the Menace from Ronnie Bremner. In third place is Fowler & McIntyre with a 2 year old Busschaert stray from Manchester who has been consistent each week. Joke

Did you hear about the thoughtful Scotsman who was heading out to the pub and he turned to his wee wife before leaving and said, 'Margaret - put your hat and coat on lassie.' She replied, ' Awe Jock that's nice - are you taking me to the pub with you?'

'Nah, Jock replied, I'm switching the central heating off while I'm out.'
