HTA – Future Teacher Scholarship Award

This award will be given to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in education.

Students who have made serious contributions and have been dedicated to our total extra-curricular program during their four years in high school are invited to apply. These students must continue their education after graduation. The committee will reward the student(s) who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. Application is made by writing to the Student Union Scholarship Committee stating your educational plans.

4. Ruth E. Barton Scholarship

This fund was established in memory of Ruth E. Barton, for: "A student in the senior class who is choosing a career which requires further training beyond high school, but not necessarily college. The career covered may include technical (medical or vocational, electrical, etc.) apprenticeships or similar fields."

5. The Dawn Taylor Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established in memory of Dawn Taylor, is to be given to a high school senior who has chosen to pursue a career in photography.

6. Hastings PTSA-Academic Achievement and Service Scholarships

The Hastings PTSA seeks to award two Academic Achievement and Service Scholarships (to be used for higher education) to graduating seniors that have demonstrated both academic achievement and service to school and community.

Applicants must submit a Scholarship Application Fact Sheet (cover page), a transcript, and a letter to the chairperson of the PTSA Scholarship Committee. The letter must include a description of:

• the student’s involvement in school and the Hastings community during high school

• how these activities contributed to personal growth, and

• plans for future education

In addition, the letter may include:

• long-term plans or goals for the future, and

• concerns about financing future education.

Please note that the PTSA Scholarship Committee may choose to interview candidates and checks will be made payable to the educational institution (not the scholarship recipient).

7. Hastings PTSA-R. William Hildebrand Memorial Scholarships

The Hastings PTSA seeks to award two R. William Hildebrand Memorial Scholarships (to be used for higher education) to graduating seniors with notable achievements in the field of creative, fine, or performing arts (whether art, music, theater, dance, photography, fiction, poetry, or any combination of these areas).

Applicants must submit a Scholarship Application Fact Sheet (cover page), a transcript, and a letter to the chairperson of the PTSA Scholarship Committee.

The letter must include a description of:

• the student’s commitment to and involvement in the arts during high school, and

• plans for future education.

In addition, the letter may include:

• long-term plans or goals for the future, and

• concerns about financing future education

Please note that the PTSA Scholarship Committee may choose to interview candidates and checks will be made payable to the educational institution (not the scholarship recipient).

8. Hastings PTSA-Scholarship for Service

As an organization compromised solely of volunteers, the Hastings PTSA believes it fitting to honor a graduating senior (seeking higher education) that exemplifies the principles of humanitarianism and service to others.

Applicants for the PTSA Scholarship for Service must submit a Scholarship Application Fact Sheet (cover page), a transcript, and a letter to the chairperson of the PTSA Scholarship Committee.

The letter must include a description of:

• the student’s humanitarian and service activities during high school (in school, community, overseas, religious or other institution, or some combination thereof) and

• plans for future education.

In addition, the letter may include:

• long-term plans or goals for the future, and

• concerns about financing future education.

Please note that the PTSA Scholarship Committee may choose to interview candidates and checks will be made payable to the educational institution (not the scholarship recipient).

9. The Russell Gabay Memorial Scholarship

Russell Gabay was a huge sports fan. But for Russ, nothing could compete with watching his kids – and those of his friends, neighbors and the entire Hastings Community – play. His family would like to honor his memory, and his big heart, with a scholarship for a Hastings High School student athlete. Applications are available in HHS Guidance. Eligibility:

• Hastings H.S. senior who has played varsity or club sports for at least two years

• GPA of 75 or higher is recommended (transcript required)

• Displays good sportsmanship and team spirit

• Involvement in community service a plus, financial need may be considered

• Must have a commitment to continued education; either a 4 year or 2 year college or certified vocational program

10. Fred J. Maier –Rotary Scholarship

The Hastings-Dobbs Ferry-Ardsley-Irvington Rotary Club has established the Fred J. Maier Scholarship. Any senior may apply for this scholarship. Criteria: Service, financial need and academic achievement.

11. Alumni Association -- Scholarship for Excellence ~ Funded by the Alumni Association ~

Hastings High School Alumni are proud of the academic achievements of all HHS graduates. With a nod to a history of excellence as exemplified by the individuals who have been inducted into the Alumni Association’s Hall of Excellence, this scholarship will be awarded to an individual who has already exhibited academic excellence.

• Applicant must be pursuing a college education

• Exhibit a stellar academic record with exceptional SAT scores

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

• Letter of recommendation from previous or current teacher and GPA of 4.0

12. Alumni Association -- The Bernard J. O’Brien Teachers Scholarship ~ Given by Robert & Sue Gersky ‘53 ~

Bernard “O-Bie” O’Brien ’50 was raised in Hastings-on-Hudson. He attended HHS and was president of his class from freshman through senior years. After graduation he attended Brockport State Teachers College where he was a multi-sport athlete and graduated with a BS degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. In 2000, O-Bie was the driving force in resurrecting the long abandoned high school alumni association and restructuring it as a not-for-profit, charitable organization. The same year O-Bie initiated the HHSAA Scholarship Program as a means to Pay It Forward. To date, more than $234,000 has been awarded to HHS graduating seniors. This scholarship was initiated in 2015 in tribute to a man who has never stopped giving back to school and community.

• The O’Brien Leadership Scholarship recognizes the skills and character traits of a

Leader: self-confidence, a strong dedication to helping others, and the willingness to step up to do the unusual or difficult thing.

13. Alumni Association -- Dr. Raymond E. Smith Scholarship for Excellence in Social Studies ~ Given by the Schmeidler Family - Richard ‘58, James ‘58, Emilie ‘59 & Katherine ‘71 ~

Dr. Raymond Smith was an extremely popular history teacher and spent more than a decade teaching at HHS. His fascinating perspective made learning history an exciting experience. Smith spoke often about the joy he got from teaching and the students he taught. This award was founded in admiration of Dr. Smith’s dedication to teaching and the affection and friendship he offered to everyone he knew.

• The applicant must be taking a career path in Education majoring specifically in Social Studies

• Demonstrate an active involvement in community service

• Letter of recommendation from previous or current social studies teacher

• Evidence of financial need may be considered/Financial Questionnaire in HHS Guidance

14. Alumni Association -- Philip S. Klipp Athletic Scholarship

~ Gifted by the Family of Philip Klipp

Phil Klipp graduated from HHS in 1946. After graduation, Phil’s prowess on the baseball diamond got him a tryout with both the Phillies and the Athletics. In 2000, Phil was among the first group of former HHS athletes inducted into the HHSAA Ronald Wilson Lindemann Sports Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments in high school and beyond.

• Continuing education is not limited to college; a senior planning to attend technical or vocational training is eligible

• Participate in at least two varsity sports for at least two years, including senior year and exhibit leadership skills

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service and GPA: 2.5+

15. Alumni Association -- The Rita Zaratzian Tribute to High School Music Teachers Scholarship ~ Given by Rafael Zaratzian ’83 ~

Rafael Zaratzian’s parents, Harry and Rita, were both music teachers and played a variety of instruments. Their passion for music and dedication to their art influenced many of their students to choose a career path in music. Rafael initiated this award in 2014, and dedicated it to all past and present HHS music teachers, who like his parents – educated, inspired and passed on their love for music to countless students at Hastings High.

• Continuing education not limited to college; a senior planning to pursue vocational or technical training, or study the creative or performing arts, is eligible

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

16. Alumni Association -- James V. Harmon Community Scholarship ~ Funded by the James V. Harmon Foundation with Matching Funds from the HHSAA ~

Jim Harmon served the Village of HoH for 32 years as the sports director for the village’s recreation department. He is remembered as a selfless and caring man profoundly dedicated to his family, friends and the Hastings community. In June 2009, by unanimous vote, the Hastings Youth Center was renamed the James V. Harmon Community Center in tribute to Jim and his service to the village of Hastings-on-Hudson.

• Continuing education not limited to college; a senior planning to pursue vocational or technical training is eligible

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

• Demonstration of good sportsmanship and team spirit

17. Alumni Association -- Ronald Wilson Lindemann Athletic Scholarship ~ Funded by the Members of the Ronald W. Lindemann Hall of Fame and Lindemann Family ~

Ronald Lindemann was a teacher, coach and athletic director at Hastings High from 1944-1957. Known as “Coach” to everyone at HHS and throughout the Village of Hastings, this popular and charismatic coach was an incredibly positive and lifelong influence to countless young men and women in the ‘40s and ‘50s and remembered as an inspiring teacher and trusted ally to all who were privileged to have known him.

• Applicant must be pursuing a college education

• Participant in at least two varsity sports for two years, including senior year and exhibit leadership qualities

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

• Letter of recommendation from coach or teacher and a 3.0 GPA

18. Alumni Association -- Gulish Family Art Scholarship ~ Given by the Gulish Family – Myrna Gulish ’55, Connie Gulish Bliss ’56 and Michael Gulish ’65 ~

The artistic endeavors of Michael Gulish, HHS class of ‘65, were further developed and sharpened through the sequence of art classes he took with HHS Art Teacher, Mr. Ronald Feaster. The balance of inspiration, direction and praise he received from his mentor inspired Michael to refine his artistic skills, and energized him to develop a life sustaining career employing his many artistic talents. This award is a tribute to this charismatic teacher and his influence on Michael and so many other budding young arts during his tenure at HHS.

• Applicant must display flair and love for art and intend to rely on their artistic talent in pursuing a career

19. Alumni Association -- The Michael & Eric Kantor STEM Scholarship ~ Given by Eric ‘Tank’ Kantor ’58 ~

The Kantor brothers both graduated from Hastings High School, Michael ’56 and Eric “Tank” Kantor ’58. After graduation, both brothers chose to pursue math related fields. Michael was a Chemical Engineer and Eric taught mathematics at Edgemont High School for 44 years, the last 11 of those years as the Mathematics Department Chair, before retiring in 2007. In 2008, Tank was inducted into the Ronald Lindemann Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments during high school.

• Awarded to an applicant who is pursuing a career in a STEM-related (science, technology, engineering, math) related field.

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

20. Alumni Association --The Julius R. Chemka Community Scholarship ~ Funded by Family & Friends of Julius Chemka and the HHSAA ~

Julius “Julie” Chemka was born and raised in Hastings-on-Hudson and graduated HHS in 1944. Julie served as a Trustee for the Village of HOH from 1970-1975 and in 1975 was elected Mayor, serving three consecutive terms. Julie is one of only a few HHS graduates that holds the distinction of being inducted into both of the HHSAA’s notable organizations – the Ronald Lindemann Hall of Fame and the HHS Hall of Excellence. This scholarship is gifted in tribute to a man who was all about family, school and community.

• Continuing education not limited to college; those pursuing vocational or technical training are eligible

• Demonstrated involvement in both school and community service.

21. Alumni Association -- The HHS Alumni Artists Scholarship

~ Funded with Monies Raised at the 2017 Alumni Art Auction ~

At the close of their 50th high school reunion celebration in September 2015, the class of 1965 initiated this limited-run scholarship with the ”left-over” funds from their reunion account. The former classmates unanimously agree to use the money in an effort to Pay It Forward and help a new generation of HHS grads reach their goals.

• Scholarship is not limited to students enrolling in a four-year college;

a senior planning to study the creative or performing arts or vocational

or technical training will be eligible.

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

• Letter of recommendation from previous or current teacher or coach

22. Alumni Association -- The Charles O. Aschmann Memorial English Scholarship ~ Given by the McCallum Family Foundation ~

The late Charles O. Aschmann taught English and was Chair of the English Department at HHS from 1958 to 1990. This highly respected teacher made all students who had the opportunity of taking his English class or learning from him in Book Club, in Junior Dramatics, and all other activities he chaired – grateful for the opportunity to know him and to appreciate his infinite abilities. Mr. Aschmann is remembered as an enthusiastic teacher, friend, taskmaster and earnest supporter in all that signified the success of HHS and its student body.

• Applicant must be pursuing a literary career or degree in English or English education

• A letter of recommendation from a previous or current English teacher is required

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

• Evidence of financial need may be considered/Financial Questionnaire in HHS Guidance

• GPA: 3.5

23. Alumni Association -- The HHS Future Alumni Authors Scholarship ~ Funded by the Members of the HHSAA and Participating Alumni Authors ~

The HHS Alumni Authors Book Collection Project was initiated by HHSAA Board Member Myrna Gulish in September 2016 to recognize former HHS graduates that pursued their passion for writing and became published storytellers and novelists. To date, more than 40+ HHS alumni have participated in the project by donating their books. A set of books has been showcased in a designated section of the high school library to inspire a new generation of HHS students to channel their inner novelist and follow their passion.

• Applicant must be pursuing a literary career

24. Alumni Association -- Richard M. Thomas Family Music Scholarship ~ Funded by the Thomas Family ~

Richard M. “Dick” Thomas graduated from HHS in 1956. While in school, Dick developed a great enthusiasm and deep-rooted passion for music. He was a member of the band, orchestra and All-State Chorus and is remembered as a masterful musician by all who knew him. His love of music remained with him throughout his life.

• Applicant must display a talent for music and intend to pursue a music education or music career

• Demonstrated involvement in school and community service

• Letter of recommendation from previous or current music teacher

• GPA 3.0

25. Stuart Cohen Memorial Scholarship

Stuart Cohen was a member of the Hastings H.S. Class of 1986. He was a member of the high school football and baseball teams. Upon graduation, he attended Westchester Community College and earned his undergraduate degree from SUNY Cortland. Mr. Cohen was an active member of the Hastings-on-Hudson Volunteer Fire Department Riverview Manor Hose Company #3. As a law enforcement professional, Mr. Cohen served as an Officer with Metro North, as a Police Officer for the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson and, lastly, as a Senior Investigator with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office. Mr. Cohen died in April of 2007 from complications related to the onset of illness while ‘in the line of duty’.

Criteria: This scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to pursue a career that requires training/preparation beyond high school. Such preparation may include vocational/technical training, community college or a four year degree. Financial need may be considered.

26. Project Share –Thomas F. Fazio Scholarship for Social Activism and Community Service

All graduating seniors who have done community service/social activism work throughout their years at Hastings High School can apply for a Project S.H.A.R.E. Scholarship. You must write an essay specifying the work you have done in the areas of service to the community, great and small, as well as any involvement in social justice causes that bring a positive contribution to the community.

27. The Theodore R. Myers Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established in memory of Dr. Theodore Myers, High School Principal from 1923-1939, was originally developed to assist deserving students with college tuition through a loan program to be repaid following graduation. In 1997 the Hastings Board of Education converted this to a scholarship grant. Applicants must demonstrate: community service, academic achievement commensurate with their ability and have overcome unusual learning difficulties.

28. Dr. Cy Gruberg Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to a student who exemplifies strong character, leadership and service to the school and community.

29. Hastings Southside Club Memorial Scholarship

On February 10, 1939, the Hastings Southside Social & Athletic Club opened its doors with a mission to promote the welfare of the youth of the community and to bring social and athletic activities to its members and friends. Through the years, our competitive nature and love of sports have been displayed through club sponsored baseball, softball and basketball tems. The Club is strongly integrated within the Hastings community through its support of other village organizations. The scholarship will be awarded to a candidate possessing both academic and athletic successes with a strong emphasis on community service.

30. Hastings Yellow Jackets Booster Club “Spirit”

Scholarship

The Hastings Yellow Jackets Booster Club was begun in 2010 by a group of coaches, parents, the High School Principal and the Athletic Director, to support athletes and their athletic programs in the Hastings-on-Hudson School district. The Booster Club promotes good sportsmanship, camaraderie and school spirit, while supporting each and every team. To this end, the Booster Club has established a scholarship program; open to any graduating senior at Hastings High School who has exhibited school “spirit” above and beyond the ordinary. A student who in some way has enhanced the athletic community at Hastings High School (examples: singing the National Anthem at a number of sporting events, managing a sports team, promoting positive energy at sporting events, etc.).

• Include a letter explaining your contribution to HHS sports and how this will impact your college experience. Inform the committee of your plans for college as well as your long-

term goals.

31. The Hastings Farmers’ Market Scholarship

This new scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated a passion for and dedicated time to issues surrounding sustainability, farming and/or food distribution. Interested students must:

• Complete the Scholarship Application Fact Sheet (cover page)

• Write a short application essay articulating the above interests

• Provide a letter of recommendation (from an adult, preferably outside of

Hastings High School) that speaks to their interests

32. The Dan Kerness Memorial Scholarship ~ Given by the family of Daniel H. Kerness ~

Dan Kerness was a beloved music teacher at Farragut Middle School and Hastings High School from 2005-2013. He passed away unexpectedly in the spring of 2013. An accomplished drummer, guitarist, pianist, singer, and musical performer, he had a lifelong passion and love for music – playing it and teaching it. Music filled Dan with a spark and joy that was infectious. This scholarship will be awarded to a Hastings High School senior who has consistently demonstrated a similar passion for music and performance during his or her time at Hastings High School.

• The applicant must be a stand-out participant in Hastings H.S. music and/or

theater programs.

• Two letters of recommendation from music or theater teachers, directors or

Private instructors – one from Hastings faculty – are required.

• Applicant must submit one of the following to showcase his or her passion

and joy for music/performance: a)Video clip – maximum 3 minutes, b) Audio

recording – maximum 3 minutes, c) Written essay – maximum 1-page.

• Continuing education not limited to college; a senior planning to pursue

vocational or technical training, or study the creative or performing arts,

is eligible.

• Evidence of financial need may be considered/Financial Questionnaire in

HHS Guidance

33. The Brian Foster Memorial Scholarship

Brian Foster was an extremely popular teacher’s aide. He is remembered as a caring humble man – dedicated to his family, friends and the Hastings community. Mr. Foster’s influence on the faculty and children, with whom he interacted, was always positive. Countless children were helped by his passion and ability to up-lift their spirits. This scholarship is given, in his memory, to a senior who is engaged in community service and/or has played varsity or club sports while exhibiting good sportsmanship. The applicant will attend a 2 or 4 year college or vocational program.

Interested students must:

• Complete the Scholarship Application Fact Sheet (cover page)

• Submit a written and signed letter of recommendation

• Community service and financial need may be considered

• An interview may be required

34. SEPTA Future Leader Scholarship 

Hastings SEPTA (Special Education PTA) is delighted to offer this scholarship to a student who (1) currently has an IEP or 504 Plan, (2) had an IEP and was declassified within the last 12-18 months or (3) has a learning difference (whether or not diagnosed).  Applicants ​should complete the Scholarship Application Fact Sheet and are invited to share, in the applicant’s choice of format (including written essay, photo, drawing, animation, video clip or personal interview), a bit about the applicant, including the applicant’s learning difference and why the applicant is interested in the SEPTA Future Leader Scholarship.  Financial need may be considered.

• The applicant (1) currently has an IEP or 504 Plan, (2) had an IEP and was

declassified within the last 12-18 months or (3) has a learning difference

(whether or not diagnosed)

35. SEPTA Future Educator Scholarship

Hastings SEPTA (Special Education PTA) is delighted to offer this scholarship to a student who is passionate about, and plans to pursue a career in, the field of special education (including as a teacher, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech and language pathologist, social worker or counselor).   Applicants ​are asked to write a letter demonstrating ​her/his commitment to and interest in special education, and describing the​ir​ plans for post-secondary education and why this career path is appealing.  Involvement in ​special education-​related community service ​(e.g., AYSO Challenger Program and Miracle League) ​is a plus, and financial need may be considered.

36. American Legion Family Farragut Post and VFW Daley Post

The members of the American Legion Family Farragut Post and VFW Daley Post will award a scholarship to a 2018 high school graduating senior. The student does not need to attend Hastings High School, but must be a resident of the Village of Hastings-on-Hudson.

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, the student must:

1) Be the child or grandchild of either an active member of the United States Armed Forces or a veteran of the Armed Forces. Copies of service papers, or proof of membership in either a Veterans of Foreign Wars or American Legion will fulfill this requirement. Documentation should be submitted with the application.

2) Plan to pursue a post-high school course of study, be it college or a vocational or trade school.

3) Write an essay (to be submitted with the application) addressing the following questions:

What does it mean to be a patriotic American today?

How do you exhibit your patriotism?

Completed applications with appropriate documentation and essay should be submitted by Monday, April 16th, 2018 and should be sent to The American Legion Auxiliary, P.O. Box 442, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706 or scanned and emailed to alaunit1195@ with “Scholarship” written in the subject line. NOTE: A personal interview may be requested.
