Youth Focus Groups

• A small group of youth are brought together and allowed to interact in a discussion of their opinions about topics, issues, or questions.

• The art of facilitation combines the techniques of open communication (both giving and receiving information) with careful listening, observation, and skillful direction.

Focus Group Goals

• Focused student input, opinion and concerns gathered to better guide successful establishment of a SBHC.

• Increased awareness among the student population of the SBHC development process

• Engagement of youth in SBHC development, advocacy and marketing

Group Composition Recommendations

• From 6 to 12 youth – “invite 10-12 and expect to get 8-9”

• Consider diversity – language, race, sexuality, education level, gender, mobility, students from other district schools eligible for SBHC access

Focus Group Roles

• Facilitator

• Logistics (selection of participants, scheduling, refreshments, etc)

Focus Group Preparation

• Identify subject areas and write broad questions under each

• List point to be discussed by the focus group

• Organize ideas in relation to the objectives for the session

• Try to move from general to specific
