Lord God almighty!Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,God in three persons, blessed Trinity!Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love, and purity.Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty! All the works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,God in three persons, blessed Trinity!Prayer of Approach (Unison) God our Great Host, we come today to worship and share a meal together. We know that the table, your Table, extends through the world. It is not contained by walls and structures. It is there in hearts and homes. As we gather, may we know your love, extended farther and wider than our minds can imagine. Amen.We Hear God’s WordA Time To Be Childrenleft88905509260389890Do you remember when you first started to learn how to color? If you were like most children, you probably colored all over the page without staying in the lines. I imagine that some of your pictures looked a lot like this. As you got older, your pictures probably looked more like this.? You began to stay in the lines and your color choices were much better too. These pictures remind me of the way some people live their lives. God gave us the Ten Commandments to tell us the things that we should and should not do. (Like the neat picture.) Some people don't pay any attention to these guidelines that God has drawn for them. (Like the messy picture.) They just do whatever they want to do; that’s called sin. Sin is anything that separates us from God. Often their choices are not very good. They color outside the lines. They think their life is beautiful, but when God looks at it, God sees that it’s just a big mess. There are other people who read the Bible and follow God's rules. They try to stay within the guidelines that God has set. Oh, they may still get outside the lines at times; we all sin at times. That is why we all need Jesus. None of us stay inside the lines 100% of the time.?Which picture do you want your life to look like?God wants us to obey the Ten Commandments. The great news is we have Jesus who loves us even when our lives are messy. When we trust Him, He is our help and gives us strength to obey God’s laws. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those that trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20 The Ten Commandments. Psalm 19 The heavens declare God’s glory. VU # 740Sung Response:Glory and praise to God whose word brings life! The heavens declare the glory of God; and the vault of the sky reveals God’s handiwork.37795209906000One day speaks to another, and night shares its knowledge with night, and this without speech or language; their voices are not heard. But their sound goes out to all the lands, their words to the ends of the earth. RIn the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun which comes out like a bridegroom from under the canopy, like an athlete eager to run the race. Its rising is at one end of the sky; it runs its course to the other, and there is nothing that is hidden from its heat. RGod’s law is perfect, refreshing the soul;God’s instruction is sure, giving wisdom to the simple;God’s precepts are right, rejoicing in the heart;God’s commandment is pure giving light to the eyes;God’s fear is clean, enduring forever;God’s judgements are true, every one of them righteous; more desirable than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, pure honey from the comb. RBy them is your servant warned; for in keeping them there is great reward. But who can discern unwitting sins?O cleanse me from my secret faults.Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the better of me.Then shall I be clean and innocent of great offence. RLet the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O God, my strength and my redeemer.Matthew 21:33-46 Parable of the landowner and tenants. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.Hymn “One Bread, One Body” # 467(Words and music copyright 1978 John B. Foley, New Dawn Music, administered by Oregon Catholic Press)292104127500One bread, one body, one Lord of all, one cup of blessing which we bless; and we, though many, throughout the earth, we are one bod in this one Lord.Gentile or Jew, servant or free, woman or man, no more. RMany the gifts, many the works, one in the Lord of all. RGrain for the fields, scattered and grown, gathered to one, for all. RMessage Today we gather, as we gather each Sunday, wherever we are, to worship God, and as part of that we gather to express our thanksgiving and to receive hope and some encouragement. Each week we gather. We do so to devote ourselves anew to God, and to listen. To listen in the hope that God will speak in a special way to us and that we will be able to do what it is that God asks of us. We listen, we pray, and we sing, hoping that the comfort of the Holy Spirit will lift us up and give us the peace that Christ promised to those who follow him.Sometimes when we worship, however, we are reminded of how far we have yet to go on our Christian journey: perhaps the prayers of the people comes a little too close to home; or the preacher reminds us of what we have promised, and not yet done; or perhaps, the law of God is read, as it is read today and instead of feeling comforted by the word we feel ill at ease, perhaps even browbeaten.914405080What do you think of the law of God? John Killinger wrote a book on the Ten Commandments a years ago. It is called “To My People With Love”. In it he tells the story of a man who came home from work one afternoon and found his daughter sitting out on the front porch. He could tell something was wrong, so he said to his wife: “What’s wrong with Puddin?” She replied, “Oh, she just found out there’s a law of gravity, and she’s mad about it.”Some people regard the law of God as restrictive and out of date, they see it as binding and hemming them in on all sides. Some people think that what Jesus taught us about God and a life of freedom, cannot be found within the law we read from Exodus today. The law of God, as given to the Israelites at Mount Sinai should be seen as freeing, not enslaving. These laws were not given so much to restrict as they were to allow all to live together in harmony. Too many interpreters and preachers have spent too much time looking at the negative side. Let’s look at the positive side. If we turn each of the negative statements into positive ones, we discover how God has given the people a basis for a safe, loving, growing community. If you have no other gods and no images, then you devote yourself to the one God you have experienced and you allow yourself to experience God beyond anything anyone could carve, draw or create. Other examples are: not bearing false witness, invites speaking well of one’s neighbours, not killing suggests efforts to preserve life, and not wrongfully using the name of God commends the praise of God. It is not enough for a community’s life and health to simply avoid crimes.47320202286000We can see when Jesus speaks that these original rules have not lost their place. They were given to be expanded, to be pushed to the deepest level of the human spirit. The commandment to love does not set the commandments aside but incorporates them and extends them without limit, as part of what it means to do what love requires. The will of God does not lose its particularity in the command to love; it simply opens up going beyond whatever laws may be articulated, but it needs their specifics for instructional purposes, charting something of what love may entail in specific life situations. These commandments were given by “the Lord your God” to God’s people, their being obeyed was not conditional on their being enforceable because the appeal is to a deeper motivation for obedience: these are the commands of “the Lord your God.” Your love and faith in God is, through these commands, extended to your neighbour and are returned in kind. God gave the Israelites, and in turn gave us, a basis from which to show our love of God and each other. These commands allow us to live out our calling as God’s people in harmony, reconciled with one another.I want to end with a story, which brings both our Ten Commandments and our communion table together. It comes from a book called, “Extending The Table: A World Community Cookbook.”“Serbian Orthodox Christians bake a special bread for Christmas morning. When the family gathers for breakfast, one of the children says the Lord’s prayer. Before breaking the bread, it is customary for family members to reconcile their conflicts. They admit the wrongs they have done and forgive one another. Then everyone stands, and together they take the big round bread in their hands, all breaking off a piece at the same time. God’s intention is that we live in community as forgiven and reconciled people. We gather around Christ’s table with our brothers and sisters all over the world. In Christ, we become aware of our brokenness and open ourselves to his healing. In Christ, we can become united in love.”God’s rules allow us to be, the best people we can be. They also allow us to come together around a single table and share the love God intended for each one of us. Amen. We Respond To God’s WordOffering InvitationEvery day is a new beginning. Every day is another gift from God. God gives us life in abundance. In gratitude we share what we have for the work of God in our church and our community…The Offertory We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator;in grateful devotion our tribute we bring. We lay it before you; we kneel and adore you;we bless your holy name, glad praises we sing. (#218 v. 1)Dedication Prayer (Unison)Creator God, in love you have given us these gifts to share. Please accept these offerings of who we are and what we have. May your blessing multiply the work they do. Amen.Invitation to the TableWe are all invited to the Table. This is the table of the Lord. It is not the table of any one denomination or congregation. It is a table which is there to feed all who come. It feeds us with grace, hope and love. We use this time to celebrate the gift of life Christ gave. If you wish to remember his great giving of self in love, then you are welcome at this table. May it be a welcoming place. There is room for all. Welcome…Communion Hymn “Bread Of Life, Feed My Soul” MV # 194(words and music copyright 2005 by Stephen Spencer, Riverview, NB)121920116205Bread of life, feed my soul, as the presence of the Spirit makes me whole.Bread of life, fill my heart with the grace and mercy you impart.I have heard your voice calling, “Come, my friend, and share in the feast that is laid out for you to show how much I care.”Bread of life, help me live a life as pure and true as Jesus did.Bread of life, help me see the boundless love of Christ for you and me.I have heard your voice calling, “Come, my friend, and share in the feast that is laid out for you to show how much I care.”Bread of life, feed my soul, as the presence of the Spirit makes me whole.Bread of life, fill my heart with the grace and mercy you impart.Prayer of Great Thanksgiving (Responsive)The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give God thanks and praise.Holy One, you speak to us in silence, yet all languages interpret you. Because you call us to be in community, we are able to become gift to one another. We invoke now your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts, that in sharing them, we may discern your presence which becomes our life.We remember and give thanks for those called out with a vision of possibility and promise: for Abraham and Sarah, for Isaac and Rebecca, for Jacob with Leah and Rachel, for Moses and Miriam. We thank you for your people who followed Moses through the birthing waters of the Red Sea into the wilderness of tempering search, until they became a people ready to enter the promised land.We thank you for the openness of Mary who dared to accept the call to be the bearer and nurturer of your Anointed One, Jesus. We bless you, O God, for Jesus, who through his life, death and resurrection fully lived the promise of redemptive wholeness available for all who would be obedient to your creating will. Therefore we rejoice to proclaim:Christ has died. Christ has risen. Christ will come again.Recalling his death, proclaiming his resurrection and looking expectantly for his coming again in glory, we have been made a new people. Send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts and upon all who gather to eat and drink at this table, may we be one body and one holy people, your people.Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, all glory, honour and might is yours now and forever. Amen.Breaking the Bread and Lifting the Cup(Online I will use the words of institution as we prepare to take the bread and cup together.
