PLENARY 2020 ? How is God calling us to be a

Christ-centred Church?

The Listening and Discernment process of the 6 themes has now ended in our Parish. We continue to pray for the success of the Plenary Council 2020.

Prayer for the Plenary Council 2020

Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit of the great South Land. O God, bless and unite all your people in Australia and guide us on the pilgrim way of the Plenary Council. Give us the grace to see your face in one another and to recognise Jesus, our companion on the road.

Give us the courage to tell our stories and to speak boldly of your truth.

Give us ears to listen humbly to each other and a discerning heart to hear what you are saying.

Lead your Church into a hope-filled future, that we may live the joy of the Gospel. Through Jesus Christ our Lord,

bread for the journey from age to age. Amen. Our Lady Help of Christians, pray for us. St Mary MacKillop, pray for us.

THE ALLELUIA COWBOY

(An Easter Reflection In 3 Parts) Part 2

Such was the situation in Never Ever. It was a dark, distrustful place, depressing, a town of lives half lived. The Cowboy tentatively suggested to those who would listen that there is another way, a better way, another world. Responses varied: aggressive rejection, polite rejection, blank eyed incomprehension, puzzlement, flickers of interest and some were enthralled and came to him by night, to learn more. Then early in the morning on the 1st day of the week there was a mighty explosion. Bricks, mortar, and dust rained down. Panicked citizens came running from their hovels to investigate. A huge hole had been blown in the great wall of the town. Standing on top of the rubble in the middle of the breach stood the Cowboy resplendent in his white outfit. Waving his white hat towards the open plains beyond he called out "come on out", "come on out" ? leave this tomb of a town! Feel the sun on your face, the wind on your cheeks, let the wind blow the cobwebs from your mind. Feel the soft grass under your feet, smell the flowers. Dive into those fresh mountain streams, wash away the grime and those fetid smells. Lift your eyes to the peaks. There are paths beyond that lead to wonderful lands where people look you in the eye, trust you and love and relish life and include you. So, with unbridled enthusiasm he called, he invited and encouraged, and he continues to do so.........

(To be continued next week)

CALLED AND GIFTED

Charism is simply the Greek word used in the New Testament for "favour" or "gratuitous gift".

Appreciating charisms, or spiritual gifts, helps us to see our parish as a place of gifts, rather than a place of needs.

Everyone is given unique gifts. Many people can recognise their charisms and abilities, but there are many who are unsure of their gifts. We must all do our little bit to encourage and help discern how we may use our gifts/ charisms. No gift is too small or insignificant.

The Charism of HELPS

empowers a Christian to be a channel of God's goodness by using his or her talents and charisms to enable other individuals to serve God and people

more effectively. Is this your gift?

Our Parish is blessed with many people who share their gifts/charisms within our Church and wider community. We give thanks to Meg and her charism of FAITH ? reaching out to her students & starting the day with prayer; to Michelle and her gift of ENCOURAGEMENT ? bringing positiveness and encouragement to the St Mary's school families; and to Paul and his charism of SERVICE ? taking on the paving ? finishing and fixing up for the safety of all. We thank them for sharing their gifts with us and our community and ultimately we thank GOD who has given them.

REACHING OUT TO ALL

We are continuing to send out bulk emails to all our parishioners who have given us their email address' (346 to date). Our system tells us that we have been successful, but we know that not everyone has received them. Please bear with us as we work through these problems. We could, quite easily, have an incorrect email address, SO email us and we can correct any errors we may have in our system. We thank those who have let us know they have been receiving our emails (about 100) so we have a way to go before we have 100%. For those who are unable to access the internet, we are doing a `letter drop' to another 150 regular mass attendees, with the weekly bulletin and `extras' we may find during the week, that we can print off, and which may be of help during this time. As we continue to do the letter drop, (which will happen each week until Mass resumes), if you know of someone who may like to receive a hard copy of the bulletin, please let us know. If you can help deliver 5 letters close to where you live, that too, would be most appreciated. Please call Pattie on 0423 232 682 or email: stmarybairnsdale@

3rd SUNDAY of EASTER Entrance Antiphon

Cry out with joy to God, all the earth; O sing to the glory of his name. O render him glorious praise, alleluia.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 2: 14, 22-33

On the day of Pentecost Peter stood up with the Eleven and addressed the crowd in a loud voice: 'Men of Israel, listen to what I am going to say: Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God by the miracles and portents and signs that God worked through him when he was among you, as you all know. This man, who was put into your power by the deliberate intention and foreknowledge of God, you took and had crucified by men outside the Law. You killed him, but God raised him to life, freeing him from the pangs of Hades; for it was impossible for him to be held in its power since, as David says of him: I saw the Lord before me always, for with him at my right hand nothing can shake me. So my heart was glad and my tongue cried out with joy: my body, too, will rest in the hope that you will not abandon my soul to Hades nor allow your holy one to experience corruption. You have made known the way of life to me, you will fill me with gladness through your presence.' 'Brothers, no one can deny that the patriarch David himself is dead and buried: his tomb is still with us. But since he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn him an oath to make one of his descendants succeed him on the throne, what he foresaw and spoke about was the resurrection of the Christ: he is the one who was not abandoned to Hades, and whose body did not experience corruption. God raised this man Jesus to life, and all of us are witness to that. Now raised to the heights by God's right hand, he has received from the Father the Holy Spirit, who was promised, and what you see and hear is the outpouring of that Spirit.'

The word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm:

R. Lord, you will show us the path of life. Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you. I say to the Lord: 'You are my God. O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup; it is you yourself who are my prize.' R. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,/who even at night directs my heart./I keep the Lord ever in my sight:/ since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm. R. And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;/even my body shall rest in safety./For you will not leave my soul among the dead,/nor let your beloved know decay. R. You will show me the path of life,/and the fullness of joy in your presence,/at your right hand happiness for ever. R.

A reading from the first letter of St Peter 1: 17-21

If you are acknowledging as your Father one who has no favourites and judges everyone according to what he has done, you must be scrupulously careful as long as you are living away from your home. Remember, the ransom that was paid to free you from the useless way of life your ancestors handed down was not paid in anything corruptible, neither in silver nor gold, but in the precious blood of a lamb without spot or stain, namely Christ; who, though known since before the world was made, has been revealed only in our time,

the end of the ages, for your sake. Through him you now have faith in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory for that very reason - so that you would have faith and hope in God.

The word of the Lord.

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! Lord Jesus, make your word plain to us: make our hearts burn with love when you speak. Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 24: 13-35

Two of the disciples of Jesus were on their way to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking together about all that had happened. Now as they talked this over, Jesus himself came up and walked by their side; but something prevented them from recognising him. He said to them, 'What matters are you discussing as you walk along?' They stopped short, their faces downcast. Then one of them, called Cleopas answered him, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.' 'What things?' he asked. 'All about Jesus of Nazareth' they answered 'who proved he was a great prophet by the things he said and did in the sight of God and of the whole people; and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had him crucified. Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not all: two whole days have gone by since it all happened; and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning, and when they did not find the body, they came back to tell us they had seen a vision of angels who declared he was alive. Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but of him they saw nothing.' Then he said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe the full message of the prophets! Was it not ordained that the Christ should suffer and so enter into his glory?' Then, starting with Moses and going through all the prophets, he explained to them the passages throughout the scriptures that were about himself. When they drew near to the village to which they were going, he made as if to go on; but they pressed him to stay with them. 'It is nearly evening' they said 'and the day is almost over.' So he went in to stay with them. Now while he was with them at the table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?' They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled together with their companions, who said to them, 'Yes it is true, The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.' Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at the breaking of bread.

The Gospel of the Lord.
