The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd

Deacon Carl’s Corner

Praise the Lord!!

There is no better time to “Praise the Lord” than – right now!! With so much “change “and so much “noise”, you may be feeling as if there is no place to go to let your mind just be at peace. What I may do to accomplish this, as someone whose children all are all grown and out of the house, would be different than a mother and father with children who are learning from home right now! But we must discover a way to find time to be with God and concentrate on bringing Him praise, even when “Hallelujahs” are far from our minds and lips!

I would suggest that praising God, daily, especially in these times, is crucial for all of us. But how? We need to return to Psalm 148 and see how all of creation is instructed to Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the heavens;

    praise him in the heights!

2 Praise him, all his angels;

    praise him, all his host!

3 Praise him, sun and moon;

praise him, all you shining stars!

4 Praise him, you highest heavens,

and you waters above the heavens!

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,

for he commanded and they were created.

6 He established them forever and ever;

he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.[a]

7 Praise the Lord from the earth,

you sea monsters and all deeps,

8 fire and hail, snow and frost,

    stormy wind fulfilling his command!

9 Mountains and all hills,

    fruit trees and all cedars!

10 Wild animals and all cattle,

    creeping things and flying birds!

11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,

princes and all rulers of the earth!

12 Young men and women alike,

    old and young together!

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,

    for his name alone is exalted;

his glory is above earth and heaven.

14 He has raised up a horn for his people,

    praise for all his faithful,

for the people of Israel who are close to him.

Praise the Lord!

Praising the Lord is more than giving praise for daily accomplishments around your home or community….

Frederick Buechner says, “The way Psalm 148 describes it, praising God is another kettle of fish altogether. It is about as measured as a volcanic eruption, and there is no implication that under any conceivable circumstances it could be anything other than what it is. The whole of creation is in on the act—the sun and moon, the sea, fire and snow, Holstein cows and white-throated sparrows, old men in walkers and children who still have not taken their first step. Their praise is not chiefly a matter of saying anything, because most of creation does not deal in words. Instead, the snow whirls, the fire roars, the Holstein bellows, the old man watches the moon rise. Their praise is not something that at their most complimentary they say, but something that at their truest they are.

We learn to praise God not by paying compliments, but by paying attention.” Look around and observe.  Take time today to Praise the Lord for who He is and His presence in your life.

The Food Pantry

We have changed our approach for collecting food donations for the Pitman Food Pantry. Each week we will be collecting a different food item. We will announce the upcoming needed food item each week in the trifold. Also we will have a monthly list here in the Crook.

Since we are not at the church on the weekends you could bring your donations directly to the pantry or Sue Burkhard's house. Pantry hours - Tuesdays 6 to 7, Wednesdays 4 to 5, Thursdays 12 to 1.

Food donations for October are:

10/3 & 4 – Tuna

10/10 & 11 – Canned Vegetables

10/17 & 18 – Canned Fruit

10/24 & 25 – Canned Ravioli

10/31 & 11/1 – Mac & Cheese

All donations are greatly appreciated and accepted.

During this time of uncertainty, please know that Church of the Good Shepherd will always be here for you. Please email us or phone in your prayers so Mother Susan and Deacon Carl can pray for you specifically if you desire. Both of them are calling parishioners to check up on you and see how you are doing. We want to thank you all for continuing to support Good Shepherd by mailing in your pledges.

Blessings,

Mother Susan and Deacon Carl

Altar Flowers & Sanctuary Candle

If you are interested in funding Altar Flowers or the Sanctuary Candle in memory of someone or in thanksgiving for someone, the forms are in the Parish Hall, on the back wall on the Bulletin Board near the kitchen. Please fill out the appropriate form with your information for your desired date, as long as it is available, on the appropriate chart on the bulletin board. Please put your completed form in Parish Administrator’s mailbox or under her office door.

We do not have flowers during Advent or Lent. The Sanctuary Candle is available year round.

Outreach

We hope that everyone is staying safe and careful during this time of the Covid-19 virus.  We are still not accepting clothes to be delivered to Camden. St. Wilfrid’s clinic is still not in operation so we have no outlet for them at this time. Please do NOT drop anything off at our house. We will be forced to dispose of anything that we receive, due to the virus.  We promise to let you know when we are taking clothing and shoes for distribution to Camden again.

Blessings,

Deacon Carl and Ellie Dunn

Pictures!

Let’s get in the habit of taking pictures of everything around here! Pictures of Sunday School, meetings, even of events at services if you can be surreptitious! Please identify who is in each photo and what the event is. Thank you!

Maryanne has received some great pics from people. Keep ‘em coming!

FAMILIES IN NEED FUND

As the CoViD pandemic lingers on, we are each facing difficult times; people losing their jobs, children needing to be home-schooled (some without computers), families trying to decide whether to buy groceries or pay the rent/mortgage, social isolation, and so on.  Many of you are experiencing anxiety over loved ones you can’t visit.  Our Church is more than a building we visit once a week, it is us, the people of Church of Good Shepherd, the people of God. We are on a spiritual journey together, no matter where we start from, led by the Holy Spirit.  Even though we can’t be together physically for the time being, we are always there for each other spiritually.

The Church had a "Families In Need" Fund, and the Vestry has re-opened this dedicated fund given the crisis we are currently facing. If you find yourself in need, please reach out confidentially to Deacon Carl at 609-868-7102 or Mother Susan at 732-759-4358, and they will do everything within the financial abilities of this Fund to help.

Also, the Vestry is asking each of us as members of the Good Shepherd family to consider the financial needs of other Church members and possibly assist those who are in need by making a contribution to this Fund.  Our Church has always been known for our outreach, but these times of uncertainty are when we most need to help those within our Church family with hardships.  If you would like to donate to this fund, simply make a check payable to “Church of The Good Shepherd” and mark it “Families In Need Fund” and we will put it to good use as Jesus guides us.  All donated funds will only be used for the purpose of helping other parishioners.

As always, we thank you for your generosity and we will continue to pray for our collective health, welfare and safety, and look forward to the time when we can safely worship and fellowship together again at Good Shepherd.

Thank You God for Fall

by Alice Aultman

Summer is gone and I am sure not sorry to see it part. The virus and shut-downs and the amount of 90 degree days with humidity added made it a period of time that will be remembered. According to one source 38 states were hotter than normal so we were not alone. Although I had lots of plans for projects when it was so sticky I just didn’t get at them and did a lot of nothing. We did have beautiful green lawns, flowers and a pretty environment that is sometimes brown dry.

I’m wondering if with all of this if God is giving us a “wake-up” call to remind us to be more thankful for what he has provided. Was it a way to show us that we don’t need all of the extras in life? Was this HIS way of telling us to be more considerate of others? Does HE suggest to prevent the spread of the virus we wear masks and do a lot more cleaning and hand washing? Who knows?

Just maybe with this new season the world will get a new start. This whole might provide a wake up to GOD’S wonderful workings!

I know I’m looking forward to some crisp weather, gently falling leaves, the changing color and the other weather changes fall brings….And I’ll sure be glad when the election is over and we can get back to a degree of being normal.

Thank you God for all you provide for us. May we appreciate your loving care and follow the way you would have us go!

Caring Hands

Caring Hands is now meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 9:30 a.m. on Zoom (ID 867 3220 8700).  All knitters, crocheters or other needlework people are welcome to join us!

THURSDAY STUDY GROUP

THURSDAY STUDY GROUP will continue with their study of Brian McLaren’s book The Great Spiritual Migration. This book has energized our group as we look at the Christian Church and how we are called to be church. One thing we have encountered is a document called “A Charter for a Just and Generous Christianity. This Charter was developed by a consortium of Christian churches. They gave affirmation to Ten Commandments that we wanted to share with all of you to ponder:

1) We love Jesus and have confidence in his good news of the reign, commonwealth, or ecosystem of God, and we seek for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven by making love our highest aim- love for God and neighbor, for outsider and enemy, for ourselves and the good earth.

2) We affirm God’s preferential option for the poor and the young in the struggle for justice and freedom…through advocacy, relationships, organizing and action.

3) We seek to honor, interpret, and apply the Bible in fresh and healing ways, aware of the damaging ways the Bible has been used in the past.

4) We seek to reconnect with the earth, to understand the harm human beings are doing to it, and to embody more responsible, regenerative ways of life in and with it.

5) We seek the common good, locally and globally, through churches of many diverse forms, contexts, and traditions and we imagine fresh ways for churches to form Christlike people who join God in the healing of the world.

6) We build inclusive partnerships across gaps between the powerful and vulnerable – including disparities based on wealth, gender, race and ethnic identity, education, religions, sexuality, age, politics, and physical ability.

7) We propose new ways of encountering the “other” in today’s pluralistic world through the creative and nonviolent wisdom of peacemaking, and we collaborate with other religious and secular small groups in alliances for the common good.

8) We host safe space for constructive theological conversation, rooting our practice in theological reflection, and translating our reflection into practical action.

9) We value the arts for their unique role in nurturing, challenging, and transforming our humanity.

10) We emphasize spiritual and relational practices to strengthen our inner life with God, to build healthy families, and to deepen our relationships with one another.

A man went to the Great Lakes

Military Cemetery.

He took some pictures while reflecting on what’s going on in our country today. Then he wrote this simple poem:

I don’t see color here,

The headstones look the same,

No black no brown no white skin tone,

There’s no one here to blame.

These soldiers fought and died for you,

Their color you can’t see,

Your rights are still protected,

Here’s the place to take a knee.

-----------------------

A Note from Mother Susan

So I sat on the front porch of the rectory with my coffee. Packers were inside, packing up our kitchen and our dining room. Emmie was teaching second graders remotely. Brad was dozing on the front porch. He’s very jaundiced and is going back into the hospital. After they’re done with him, we’re leaving for Chicago.

This is a bittersweet leave-taking. We’re eager to return to Chicago to live closer to our kids, but it’s proving to be hard to do for so many reasons.

I was leaving the rectory the other day to do some shopping and as I left I looked back. There in the doorway, with only his furry head appearing in the screen door, was Max, our elderly, spunky dog - frequently rude. He was barking of course.

“Don’t leave me! I may never see you again! You may be gone forever - FOR-EV-ER! I LOVE YOU! OH NOOOOO!”

Such are the thoughts of dogs who love us unconditionally. Are we even capable of understanding that devotion? Because that’s how God loves us - unconditionally.

As we prepare to leave, I find myself thinking about how God’s love for me has informed and shaped my life. Most of the time I wasn’t even aware of what God was up to with me, but yet I have always felt the gentle nudging of God’s hand - “take this turn” - “try this” - and somehow it works. It can be scary. It can be nerve wracking. But it works.

It works especially well if I trust. And there are times in our lives when that’s all we can do - trust. That's where Brad and I find ourselves now.

In my last sermon for you I urged you all to continually remind yourselves that you are the Church. You are the Body of Christ. Theresa of Avila said, “Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.”

Jesus has made it clear. We are responsible for each other. And the only way we can be truly responsible for each other is to love each other. And the only way we can truly love each other is to let go and trust in God. That is where strength and joy can be found. That is when we can look beyond the everyday, piddling silliness of the world today to the greatness of life itself and of God, the source of all that is good and meaningful and joyful.

I pray for you all, for your well-being and good health. Please pray for Brad and me.
