This form is designed for individuals who are entering the credential program and are requesting to waive the initial educational technology requirement. This waiver process is designed for teacher candidates who have previously completed coursework in educational technology or had professional experiences in educational technology that are commensurate with the course outcomes.

EDUC 422 has three parts, each of which may be waived individually. Please be aware that there are two waiver paths:

1. Waive the entire course – all three sections must be passed

2. Waive one or more sections of the course

The CSUSM educational technology waiver process is based on the International Society for Technology in Education’s (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T) revised in 2008 and the specific needs for the COE credential program. The following three areas must be addressed:

A. Educational Technology Basics

The EDUC 422 course sets the stage for addressing the standards in the credential program. EDUC 422 specifically addresses:

NETS*T I – Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity (fully met)

NETS*T II – Design & Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments (Partial)

NETS*T III – Model Digital-Age Work and Learning (fully met)

NETS*T IV- Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility (fully met)

NETS*T V – Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership (fully met)

B. Technology Tools for Learning

As part of the portfolio for Standard 1, candidate must include examples of their ability to use and understand specific software packages designed to inspire students and promote creativity. These include: a concept mapping program such as Bubbl.us, Inspiration/Kidspiration or Gliffy; a drawing program such as Pixie by Tech4Learning, or TuxPaint Open Source program, a multimedia presentation tool such as Scratch, Alice, or VoiceThread, and interactive learning Web based tools such as those available through search of the Thinkfinity Partners database under “Interactive” resources”.

C. Introduction to the Electronic Portfolio

The course provides teacher candidates with the skills to develop an electronic portfolio during the teacher preparation program. Candidates will use Taskstream as their electronic portfolio to document their Teaching Performance Expectation (TPE) 14 and later for TPA (assessments).

The teaching (NETS*T II) standard is completed during the program to meet educational technology requirements for the credential verifying that teacher candidates are able to effectively and appropriately apply technology in teaching and learning with students during their student teaching experience. The combination of the EDUC 422 and the embedded experiences meet the CSUSM TPE #14 on Educational Technology.

Two Ways to Submit Waiver Request:

“What do I submit?”

1. Submission of a transcript and associated syllabi of coursework showing a grade of C+ or better in which the ISTE standards above have been met as part of the coursework.
