These five set ups have been compiled using suggestions from the Diocese of Leeds Communications Team, videographers from across the Diocese and online forums and advisor videos. Live streaming platform The set ups below all require an online platform to live stream from. Facebook and YouTube are both recommended. The live stream can be done directly through these social media platforms or via the software suggested in some of the set ups below. These are both free and offer the potential for people outside of a church to access an online service. Alternatively, church services can be streamed to a website. Set Up 1 (?20 - ?50)Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many of our churches have used devices such as smart phones and tablets to live stream services at home and from church buildings. For many this has been a quick and affordable solution, with minimal amounts of additional equipment required. This set up could also be used during a normal service with a congregation. It would be limited but very cost effective if you already have a decent smart phone or tablet. Just make sure to get yourself a tripod to hold the device in place and get rid of any unnecessary movement or shaking.Hardware:Smart Phone or TabletTripodSet Up 2 (?100)A more advanced set up, with the live stream operated from a computer and the image displayed from an external webcam instead of a smart phone or tablet. Hardware: PC or Mac computerThis acts as your hub for the live streaming. The camera/capture device will be connected and the computer will run the necessary software needed to do a live stream.HD Webcam These can be attached straight to a laptop or computer via USB. Purchasing one, like the Logitec HD webcam 720p, will offer a good quality image and it is easy to plug in and use.Software:Online platforms such as Facebook and YouTube allow users to stream direct to their websites. However, it is recommended that you use specialist, external software to operate the live stream from a computer. This enables vision mixing between camera and other sources, such as switching between screens during the live stream, perhaps showing one that has been pre-made with a Bible verse on for example. Please find three options below which come recommended.OBS - free to download for Mac or PCEcamm Live - available on subscription for MacvMix - available on subscription for PCSet Up 3 (?500 - ?700)A set up where the video is captured from an external camera, which is then connected to a computer via a capture card. The stream is then operated from a piece of free software.Hardware: PC or Mac computerThis acts as your hub for the live streaming. The camera/capture device will be connected and the computer will run the necessary software needed to do a live stream.Digital cameraIf you are someone who already uses an advanced DSLR camera for videos and photography, the transition towards live streaming will be relatively easy so consider using that instead. However, if you are seeking to buy a camera, consider one manufactured by a well known brand like Panasonic, Canon or Sony. Cameras that output a clean video image over HDMI can be purchased for ?400 - ?500. They are also versatile, offering a camera that can be used for photography. Video Capture CardCameras like the one above will require a capture card in order to go live from a computer. The video feed from the camera will be sent via a HDMI cable (?10 - ?20), which will then be connected to the capture card. This then plugs to the computer via USB and enables the feed from the camera to connect to the computer.Camera tripodIf you don’t wish to have the camera permanently set up, purchasing a good tripod to sit the camera on is a must. Tripods can often adjust to around 6ft and result in a still, smooth image.Software:Online platforms such as Facebook and YouTube allow users to stream direct to their websites. They are generally more costly but offer an improved picture and are fully manual, meaning all the settings can be changed to adjust the image. Different lenses can also be bought for them, depending upon the type of frame you are looking for.Video Capture Device The video feed from the DSLR camera will be sent via a HDMI cable (?10 - ?20), which will then be connected to this capture device. It can also be controlled via remote and there is no need to purchase a video capture device for this camera because it connects straight to a computer via USB, making the set up simpler.Audio interfaceMany churches will already have a pa system with a mixing desk.
