Presidents Report

In November we collected the free 4' Hare and Forbes Long bed jointer (LBJ) (all the way with? ) from St Clair.

We were also offered for free a bench grinder. Naturally, both these items were accepted with enthusiasm. The jointer has been duly tested and is now in the storeroom after a little reorganization. Doug is extremely happy with said item and will show us how to safely use it in the New year. The bench grinder is currently under the hall and its donor has offered future training. (more info from editor later)

Tuesday; As part of the club's WHS program we started our safe use of the table saw with a series of YouTube videos, which were well received. One of the key things observed from these clips was the need to avoid the dreaded kickback from the saw blade. Links to these clips are outlined on the last page and we would urge members to have a look at them. I will provide links to each of these videos on the website later.

Saturday; Our Public liability Insurance requires us to be competent on each piece of equipment the Club has. Our safety officer Ray will undertook operation and safety training for all. Those members present were assessed for competency on the Table Saw. Those who were not present will need to be assessed at future Saturday meetings.

This will be an ongoing requirement for each club machine in the future. The new Jointer and the Bench Grinder will be added to the Club's equipment and competency register and, members will be required to be assessed on both these items prior to use.

Could I take this opportunity to wish all members and Families a happy and joyful Christmas and a prosperous New year.

For those who are not well, we wish you a speedy recovery

What's going On in 2017

Your committee has been working behind the scenes to formulate an agenda of activities, visits and talks for next year.

It is difficult to know what you would like to do, so, would you please let us know and we will gladly look at the idea. Nothing concrete as yet, and while we do have some activities in mind, the more opportunities the better.

Sandwich Board

In an effort to attract new members, we have constructed a Sandwich board which will be displayed at the top of Bunbinla Ave pointing potential members to the Guide Hall. This sign will be chained to a post and a roster system will operate as to who puts it out, and who brings it in.

Nursing Home

We have also been tasked to do some small items for Edinglassie care facility in Emu Plains. The items are small tray tables which can straddle a patient who is bed ridden, some bird feeders, and some games for our Lady of Consolation Nursing home in St Mary's.

Display Box

Some time ago, we were approached my an `Artisan' from the upper mountains asking us could we make a display box for her. While the box was made, all efforts to meet with the lady have not been fruitful, consequently, we will sell the box at the Glenbrook Australia Day next year.

Future meetings;

As per our AGM decisions all workshops will be on a Saturday for a trial period of six months and then reviewed at a Special General Meeting in July.

Saturday Jan 14;

Preparation of boxes etc. for Australia Day.

Jan 26 Australia Day

Volunteers needed for the stall. It is another good PR day for the club and even sales of your completed works of art. The Club will take a percentage of the sale item. Please indicate to any committee member and let them know if you can attend, and what you can do on the day to assist.

January 28

This time we will continue the competency training and testing of the table saw and mitre saw, and commence on some of the Nursing Home projects.

Also in the new year, we will be issuing new member cards to all financial members, and if my memory serves me, annual fees are also due in February.

From the editor

I would like to thank Ian Griffiths for editing the Clubs Newsletter `Fine Cut' during my absence this year. Ian, it's gonna happen again in 2017! I am off to WA in April/May , The Channel Islands and France in June/July/ August, and Glen Innes in November, so please keep up the good work!

I would like to thank Mr Derek Ridgley from St Clair, who was kind enough to donate the Hare and Forbes Long Bed JoInter, and Mr John Mulquin for the donation of a Bench Grinder. Both these items will be a boost to the Club. John is a former member and has kindly agreed to do some demonstrations during 2017.

Also, we have another new member, Mr John Pyke from Medlow bath, welcome John.

Christmas Luncheon Sunday December 11- Girl Guides Hall 12:00-12:30 pm.

As usual this is a partly catered part BYO casual get together. We will have the usual nibbles and drinks, chicken, ham and salads, desserts and Club Challenge Judging. It is a great chance to just have a chat with other members and their partners/friends before the busy Christmas schedule for most of us. You will need to bring plates, cutlery, glasses, and drinks. Did you know just a little bit of trivia!

Lauded as "the most beautiful woman in the world," film actress Hedy Lamarr earned our eternal gratitude when she drafted a "Secret Communications System" during WWII -- technology still used by cell networks, Bluetooth gadgets, and Wi-Fi.

Dubbed "the world's first programmer," Ada Lovelace wrote commands that could solve specific math problems for an early mechanical computer in 1843. She also predicted that computers could "compose elaborate and scientific pieces of music."

If you click on the links, you will get a lot more information on these 2 remarkable ladies. More next month (ed).
