Course Description: BITC2441 is an introduction to the theory and laboratory techniques in molecular biology with an emphasis on DNA replication, transcription, gene expression and regulation, recombinant DNA and RNA techniques such as transformation, RT-PCR, Northern Blots, microarray analysis, PCR, and DNA bioinformatic tools. The laboratory exercises are designed to provide a hands-on context for the topics being presented in the course lectures and in the readings from the course textbook. Teamwork is an important component: students will work in groups of 2-3 students.

2. BITC2441 Molecular Biology Lab Manual (3rd Ed.), by Fletcher, & Phelps (will be provided by email and Blackboard postings during the semester)
3. Basic Laboratory Methods For Biotechnology: Textbook & Laboratory Reference (2000) by Seidman & Moore, Prentice Hall
4. Safety goggles or glasses marked with ANSI Z86.1 on the lenses
5. Scientific calculator with statistics & linear regression capability
6. Sharpie pens
7. 3-ring binders
Prerequisites: Passing grades (70% or better) in BITC1311, BITC1402 or Departmental Approval. Passing grade (70% or better) on an ACC Biotechnology advanced laboratory techniques assessment exam.
Course Objectives/Outcomes. The state of Texas has adopted Skill Standards for Biotechnology for accreditation of training programs. The Austin Community College Biotechnology Program was the 1st program in the state to formally adopt these standards and is recognized for that from the Texas Skill Standards Board (). The competency outcomes for this course emphasize, communication skills, organization skills, punctuality, and teamwork in addition to the acquisition of hands-on skills in molecular techniques.
Instructional Methodology: There are laboratory and lecture components to this course, which must be taken together. There will be required readings from the textbook, as well as occasional assignments from the scientific literature. Both the lecture and laboratory components will require the use of the Internet, made available to the student in the Austin Community College computer labs. An emphasis is placed on active learning strategies for content mastery.
Course Rationale This course is designed to provide practical explorations into fields of biotechnology. In support of Austin Community College’s Mission Statement to support skills for “life-long learning”, this course will challenge students to apply critical thinking skills to their readings, class activities, laboratory exercises, and classroom discussions about current topics in molecular biology. Although an emphasis is placed on each student’s personal responsibility for constructing their new knowledge, opportunities for working collaboratively with groups will also be provided.
