Evidence of Spatial Inequality in Detroit

Part I: Create your wiki page to house your house information by following the steps on the Spatial Inequality in Detroit assignment page on the class wiki.

Part II: Collecting your data

Using Google Maps () or Zillow, (), take a picture (using a screen shot) of houses in the following areas of Detroit. Make sure to use a picture that is from the street view, not a satellite shot looking at the roof.

• Ask a classmate to show you how to get a street view in google maps if you don’t know how.

• Ask a classmate how to take a “screenshot” and past it into a document or how to upload it directly to your wiki page if you don’t know how.

b. Calculate and give the distance from this house to your first three houses.

Part III: Designing your page

• Insert your photos of the four houses along with their addresses directly onto your wiki page.

▪ If you cannot figure out how to do this you could take screenshots of each house and paste them into Word, Paint, or Powerpoint documents, and upload the documents to the wiki.

▪ If you upload separate documents make sure to save each document with a title that includes your first names to make them unique.

▪ If you can find the estimated value of the house on the Zillow website, you should include this as well.

• Provide a map of Detroit with the locations of your four houses marked.

▪ The map can be zoomed in so as far as you need to be able to show the locations of all four houses on a single map as well as a section of the nearest expressway (I-94, I-75, I-96, I-375, or M-10).

▪ Use the drawing tool to circle or highlight and label each of your houses.

If you finish early try to find the best example of Spatial Inequality in Detroit (See who has the shortest distance) – or – Find examples of Spatial Inequality in any other city in the world.

• You can post these extra examples at the bottom of the wiki page.

The class will vote for the best examples of spatial inequality from these areas Detroit.

The person (or people) who best demonstrates spatial inequality with their selections and presentation will receive extra credit points on the Chapter 9 Quiz.
