This was something new for the jungle tiger- the noise of heavy traffic. Cars, buses and big lorries were driving along the new road by the forest. It connected two opposite sides of the country, but also brought the traffic much closer to the wild animals of the rainforest. The tiger was far away from his usual surroundings, and he was trying to get back to his own hunting ground. He walked forward, slowly and carefully through the trees and, as he walked, the strange noises got louder and louder.Suddenly, the tiger stopped. Now he was in the open and there were no trees or long grass to stand in! He was now on the busy road! He knew what to do in the forest, but didn’t know what to do here. The tiger went charging in to the middle of the road – Straight in to the traffic. The vehicles were travelling fast and many of the drivers did not even see the tiger. Read it and and solve the crossword .Around the late 14 century, several Gond kingdoms came up. The Gonds were those who lived in large forests of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh,Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra called "Gondwana". Gonds observed dussehra (Dasara) as an important festival. They practised shifting cultivation in the forests. Their tribes were divided into smaller clans headed by a 'raja'. A few large Gond kingdoms began to dominate the smaller ones after the decline of Delhi Sultans. These kingdoms had centralised form of administration. Kingdoms were further divided into Garh' controlled by a particular clan. These Garhs were further divided into Chaurasi (84 villages) and then to Barhots (12 villages). This equal division later changed to unequal due to clustering of small clans over time. Brahmanas emerged as influential group. The king of Garha Katanga (most powerful Gond state) AmanDas, wanted to become a Rajput and assumed the title of Sangram Shaha. His son Dalpat married Durgawati, daughter of Chandela Rajput. After Dalpat's death his wife, and later on his son fought against Mughal forces and were finally defeated by the Mughals. Despite the fall of Garha Katanga, the other Gond kingdoms survived for sometime and finally fell into the hands of Bundellas and Marathas. The Gond kings employed Brahmins from Varanasi as priests and gave them land grants. These kings also patronized the Sanskrit language. The Ahoms of Brahmaputra valley have migrated from Burma (Myanmar) in 13 century. They were branch of Shan tribe, They were divided into number of clans known as 'khels". They embraced Hinduism and were dominant in Assam region. They comprised of several tribal groups. While moving in the jungles of North-East, they had built many roads and irrigation systems. Some groups had also entered in upper Assam. In 15 century, they succeeded in building a small kingdom of their own by suppressing some landlords in the upper Assam area. During the 16 century, they annexed the kingdoms of Chhutiyas or Bhuiyans (1523) and Koch Hajo (1581) and subjugated many other dominant tribal groups of the area. After annexing Koch Hajo, the Koch joined hands with Ahoms to fight against Mughals. In 1662, Mughals under Mir Jumla attacked the Ahom kingdom. The Ahoms were defeated in this battle and the area came under the control of Mughals. The Mughals did not rule this area directly and the Ahoms managed to rule the area on their own till 1826. The Ahom state depended upon forced labour. The Ahom rulers maintained a work-force which played an important role during both war and peace. Those forced to work for the state were called 'paiks'. Almost all adult males served in the army during war. They were also engaged in building dams, irrigation systems and other public works. The Ahoms also introduced new methods of rice cultivation. Every paik was given a certain part of land meant for rice cultivation. This land was tax-free and could be redistributed. Ahoms worshipped their tribal Gods. During the first half of the 17th century, Hinduism became the predominant religion. But the Ahom kings did not completely gave up their traditional beliefs after adopting Hinduism. Theatre was encouraged. Historical work, known as 'buranjis', were also written .Solve this crossword. 2. Observe the given map of India and name the state for each tribe marked.
