Program Purpose

Introduce patrons to the Internet and World Wide Web and teach them the basic skills necessary to access the Internet and navigate the Web using the library’s computer and electronic resources.

To Begin – Define the Internet and explain how it differs from the World Wide Web. Introduce the various options for connecting to the Internet

• Library - Available to all library card owners. Free access one hour per day.

• Dial-up – Modem that connects your computer to the internet over the telephone line.

• DSL - Broadband service provided by phone companies.

• Cable – Broadband provided by cable companies (Comcast, etc.)

• Wireless - Similar to cell phone technology, generally slower than DSL or Cable.

Skill One - Web pages & Browsers

• Explain a Website and its Home page

• Introduce the concept of an Internet browser

• Introduce the components of the browser:

Title Bar, Menu Bar, Tool Bar, Address Bar, Status Bar, Task Bar, Scroll Bar, and general location of most web page contents

Skill Two - Web Navigation & Browser Icon

• Introduce “links” or hyperlinks

• Introduce website menus & basic browser icons: Back, Forward, and Home

Activity: Follow link to a branch library, click on map link to find its location

• Introduce more browser icons: Minimize, Maximize, Restore, & Close

Activity: click on each button

Skill Three – Accessing Information on the Web

• Introduce the concept of a website address

• Introduce where a web address goes in the browser

• Explain briefly http:// protocol (only that it does not need to be typed in by web user)

• Explain basic Domain names and common extensions

Activity: Type in address bar – introduce cursor, delete & backspace keys. Click on some links, review back and forward buttons, click on Home icon to return to KRL

Skill Four - Web Search Engines

• Introduce concept of Search Engine

Activity: Visit KRL Resources Tab then Search the Web link

• Introduce tips for using a search engine interface (entered as a phrase, capitalization not needed)

• Demonstrate a keyword search in Google and explain results after each keyword is entered.

• Introduce Google’s web address

Activity: open Google using address bar, students do a sample search, provide assistance.

• Introduce concept of website credibility – explain About Us, Contact Us, & Copyright Dates

Activity: Have students do a search on “medline plus”

Skill Five - Printing Information off the Web

• Introduce Print Preview and Print Dialog box

• Introduce highlighting and print selection

• Introduce Printer-friendly pages
