10th Grade English Herbert Hoover High SchoolMrs. Javidan, Room 11218818-242-6801 ext. 11218 or hjavidan@Homework listed at: Course Objective: Students will strengthen and develop their foundation and knowledge of the English Language Arts by learning the essential reading, writing, listening, speaking and critical thinking skills that are necessary to prepare them for successful academic work in and beyond high school. Note: This course meets the “B” requirement for college a-g admission when students earn a C or better. Parent Initial_______, Student Initial________Curriculum: The curriculum revolves around the Common Core State Standards. The main texts we will use are within the 10h grade Holt Literature and Language Arts textbook, its accompanying grammar and language conventions based text, Holt Handbook of English Language Conventions, and the novels Fahrenheit 451 and To Kill a Mockingbird.The five domains of the curriculum are writing, reading, listening, speaking and language. These five domains are described below.Writing: Students will progress through the stages of the writing process to produce narrative, expository (including research), argumentative, and narrative texts of 1500 words or more, as well as formal business letters and technical documents. Students are expected to use the Cornell note taking style.Reading: Core Literature: Students will read and understand grade-level-appropriate materials, analyze literary texts and non-fiction and increase their vocabulary development. The core literature will include short stories, poetry, drama, and informational texts.Per semester, students will read 1,200 pages outside of the regular assigned class reading. The book must be approved by the teacher and parent. A brief book report may be required on each book (or section of the book for longer works) every four to five weeks.Listening and Speaking:Students will formulate adroit judgments about oral communication. They will deliver well-planned, logical, focused and coherent presentations that convey clear and distinct perspective and solid reasoning using vocabulary, tone, and gestures tailored to the purpose and the audience. Language:Students will demonstrate a command of Standard American English including its conventions: grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, manuscript form, and formats specific to writing tasks. Parent Initial________, Student Initial_______ Daily Materials Students are expected to arrive each day to class on time and ready to learn. Successful students will bring: a 3-ring Binder for daily use – See Notebook information, 2 pencils, 2 dark blue or black ink pens (not felt tip), 2 colored pens (bright, but easy to read), a pencil pouch (or backpack with pouch), 1 or 2 highlighters, white lined paper for class work and homework assignments. (Paper torn out of a spiral notebook will not be accepted.), a date book or binder reminder (weekly calendar) for writing homework and extended assignment dates for all classes, one package 3 x 5 notecards. Be prepared so you won’t have to ask other classmates for supplies. Javidan anization/Study: Students will keep a binder that will include a Table of Contents so that students can keep a record of all their learning. Student work is organized in this binder according to dates and it should be in chronological order. The binder will be maintained in an up-to-date and organized manner at all times. Students will use the Cornell note taking style. Organization is key to success. The binder will be evaluated periodically throughout the yearGrading Policy: Grades will be based on class participation, assignments, quizzes, tests, exams, projects, presentations, essays, and notebook. Grades will be determined on a total point scale over the whole semester. A = 100 – 89.6% B =89.5 – 79.6% C = 79.5 – 69.6% D = 69.5 – 62.6% F = 62.5% - 0% Parent Initial_______, Student Initial________Policy on Absences, Make Up and HomeworkTurn in all assignments on time and with a title and a full heading. Papers should be organized and neatly written in blue or black ink. They will not be accepted if they are crumpled, folded, or torn out of a spiral notebook. Typed papers should be 12 pt, Times New Roman, in upper and lower case, and be double-spaced.English 10Name (Last name, First)Type of Assignment Period DateTitle of AssignmentExpect to have homework every day in English. When you have completed your English homework, you will routinely “STAR” your Cornell notes, organize your English binder and do SSR (silent sustained reading) so that you complete your 1,500 pages of outside reading. Homework will always be collected at the beginning of the class period. If any students are seen working on the homework at the beginning of the class period when it is due, it cannot be accepted for full credit. Homework should always be turned in. Therefore, work turned in one day late will be eligible to receive only ? credit with a PARENT NOTE and a brief explanation for the assignment being turned in late. ** The best way to avoid forgetting to do an assignment or forgetting an assignment at home is to be organized, copy the assignment IN CLASS and visit the hoover web site.** Makeup homework and tests must be completed if a student has been absent due to illness. (If the absence is the result of truancy, no makeup work may be done for credit.) Makeup work must be completed within two days following the absence unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher. ALL homework assignments are posted in the room AND on the Hoover website. When turning in any late assignments, above the title of the assignment please write: (Late and Date of Absence) Late – Absent on Wed & Thurs, 10/3 & 4 Javidan 3**If you know ahead of time that you will be missing a day or more of school, please advise me before you are absent. You may be able to get some of the work, or work can be collected for you!***If you will be absent for a SCHOOL ACTIVITY, you must get assignments before you go and they will be due either upon your return or at a time established by you and me. Homework assignments can be found daily at .To find out what was covered during your absence, contact the classmates and/or check the web site.Please speak with me personally to set up a time to make up any missed tests or quizzes. Important: If you are absent more than 3 days, contact the counseling office to request your assignments for all of your classes and phone me personally for your English assignments. Violations of the Code of Conduct will result in consequences that follow Hoover High Discipline Policy. This includes doing any work, or taking any test where the responses or answers come from another source without proper documentation or acknowledgement. Cheating also includes providing work or answers to another student. Beware of the Internet! If you are unsure of the information given in class or of the reading done outside of class, it is better for you to bring those issues to me or to the class for clarification rather than jeopardize your grade, your work, your reputation, and your character by copying information out of or off of the Internet. Any work copied from the Internet or another source without approval of the teacher and proper documentation will result in no credit for that assignment, a letter home to your parent/guardian, and a referral to administration for additional disciplinary action. Subsequent offenses will result in a failing grade for the class. Special note on phones/electronics: Phones/electronics may only be used for appropriate academic purposes. I will choose those times in which phones may be used. At all other times electronics/phones must be off and IN a bag/purse. If you choose to use your cell phone while instruction, you will be asked to place in your phone in the assigned pocket for storage every day until the end of the semester.
