Dear Families:

I would like to extend a warm welcome to you and your child as we begin the new academic year. I look forward to teaching your child Global History this year. With your support, communication, and collaboration, your child’s success in Social Studies and in school is assured. During the course of the year I will be in contact with you concerning your child’s academic, social, and emotional well-being as it relates to my class.

Please take a moment to read through the following information. Thank you in advance for your time and patience in reading this letter. Due to the fluid nature of COVID-19, please bear in mind that we will all need to be flexible during this school year. The following overviews are my current expectations, if any changes need to me made, I will notify you via e-mail.

Course Overview:

• Throughout this course, students will investigate events from multiple perspectives, and make global connections that will lead to a greater understanding of the foundations of our modern world.

• Our class will provide opportunities for all students to achieve success. The overall goal of the class is for students to gain a genuine appreciation for Global History, develop critical thinking and writing skills, and to successfully prepare students for the New York State Regents Examination in Global History and Geography, which will be taken in June.

• 10th grade Global History begins with an introduction to the Scientific Revolution (1600s) and ends with modern global issues.

• Some major units of study will include: the Enlightenment, French Revolution, Revolutions in Latin America, the rise of Nationalism in Europe, the Industrial Revolution, Imperialism in Africa, India, China and Japan, World War I, Russian Revolution, World War II, the Chinese Communist Revolution, the Cold War and Collapse of the Soviet Union, Middle East and modern global issues.

Teaching Strategies/Techniques:

• I will be using a variety of teaching strategies and techniques to help make 10th grade social studies an interesting, challenging, stimulating, and interactive experience for all students. All work is modified to meet the learning needs of each student. Here are just some of the way’s students will become involved in learning.

• Vocabulary Activities: it is important that students are familiar with the vocabulary words associated with each unit so that they will be able to identify words in context and make word associations necessary to answer NYS Regents style questions as well as increasing their reading comprehension skills. Students will be given a vocabulary list at the beginning of each unit and we will complete vocabulary exercises utilizing “Do Nows” and Quizlet assignments.

• Power Point Presentations: Each PowerPoint presentation will have Questions for Reflection at the end which measures each student’s comprehension of the material presented.

• Reading and Document Packets: These reading packets consist of short reading passages followed by short answer response questions. These packets are designed to reinforce reading comprehension skills by having students highlight and annotate important information as well as improve writing skills. All packets will end with either a word search or crossword puzzle to again reinforce vocabulary skills.

• Class Discussions: Class discussions are the most important component in a student learning as they will have multiple opportunities to ask and answer questions that they may have about the topic we are learning about. It is also a way for me to assess their learning and to further modify curriculum.

• Video clips/songs: These are perhaps one of my favorite modalities to introduce, teach and reinforce content. Links may include global history songs, short videos with questions and clips from the History Channel and movies.

• Creative/Research Projects (group & individual): Projects are meant to allow for differentiation of instruction and take into account students learning styles. Projects are meant to help a student’s grade. A project may take the place of a formal test in order to allow students to achieve optimal success in the classroom.

• Current Events: I will assign a current events project that will be a homework assignment approximately 1-2 a month. I will choose articles that relate to topics that we are or will be studying this year. This increases students critical thinking skills (who, what, where, when and how) and helps prepare them to become a better citizen by being more aware about what is happening in the world.

• Unit Review Packets: Review packets will include graphic organizers, comparison charts, Regents style questions and primary documents with constructed response questions. All reviews and keys will be given prior to all assessments.

• Google Classroom: For this school year, we will be using Google Classroom as the preferred online learning platform. All class materials, study guides and assignments can be found on my Google Classroom.

**Required Materials:

✓ Commack issued Chromebook (Daily)

✓ 2 or more pens – blue or black ink or pencils

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

• Be prepared for class (pen/pencil, Chromebook, homework – each day). Due to COVID-19 the sharing of materials is no longer an option.

• Be Respectful (listen carefully, raise your hand to speak and wait to be recognized)

• Be Present (ask questions, add to discussions with your comments)

• All students must wear face coverings during instruction, I will provide appropriate breaks for students to remove their masks during class. I thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Tardiness:

• Students have a responsibility to arrive to class on time. Students will receive a warning the first and second time they are late to class without a pass. The third time, I will call home. The fourth time, a student will receive a dean’s office referral.

**Lockers/Restroom:

• DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, STUDENTS WILL NO LONGER BE USING LOCKERS.

• Students must ask permission to go to the restroom and students must sign out on the sheet by the door. I would like to limit trips to the restrooms during the middle of class.

Cell Phone Policy:

• DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS PARENTS WILL BE CALLED IF STUDENTS REFUSE TO PUT THEIR PHONES AWAY WHEN ASKED.

• Cell phones are only allowed during passing times, privileged study hall, and lunch. There will be zero tolerance for cell phone use during class. If students are seen using their cell phone, I will have to confiscate them. I have a “cell phone jail” in the classroom where confiscated phones will be placed. Students may take their phone at the end of class.
