Process :Through the Rooftop Rain Water Harvesting technique the rain water is captured from the roof.?It is then sent directly to the ground through pipes and stored in the subsurface of ground. The open ground water is percolated in the sub ground levels instead of draining out through sewer. Through the submersible pump this water is utilized optimally for gardening and various other purposes. It again gets absorbed in the ground and reused. Through these techniques the water table is maintained.Future PlansThe school is planning the expansion of its Rainwater Harvesting Project in the near future by the installation of PVC Pipes, Downpipes, First rain separator, Leaf trap, Filter, Storage tank, Tap and Water quality check to utilize the water in pantry, consumption and washrooms, as a next step towards becoming a totally green school.Waste ManagementThe school is always effortful to spread awareness on environment issues among students and neighbourhood. Waste Management is one of them. The school has a proper system of waste disposal which includes the segregation of wet and dry biodegradable and non biodegradable waste at source. The organic waste though not recycled but treated in a compost pit with support and participation of students in order to develop the spirit of environment conservation in them. Electronic waste is also disposed off through proper channel. Methods used by school for Waste ManagementSeparating, reducing, reusing and composting are various methods that are used for managing school waste. Waste Separation-Separating waste is the first step in managing the school’s rubbish. Bins are set up for different kinds of waste. We have clearly labelled bins for glass, paper, plastic, cans and for organic waste.Waste Reduction- Staff and students are educated about reducing waste by reusing and composting. Unnecessary shopping of paper and plastic is avoided in the school. Waste Reuse-Previously used printed sheets are used as rough sheets and notepads. Charts are used as spreadsheets for anic Waste Compost-Organic waste, like food scraps, plants, paper and lawn clippings are separated from other rubbish. Organic waste is used for composting and students are taught the procedure about how it works. This compost is used in the school gardens, saving on the cost of fertiliser and other chemicals. Energy Efficient Electronic EquipmentsMost of the electronic appliances as air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions are energy efficient and certified with energy star. Staff and students are well trained to prevent any wastage of electrical/electronic energy in classrooms, labs and other places of importance. The school boasts for its well designed infrastructure which includes perfectly lit and ventilated classrooms, restrooms, labs etc that are placed in the most energy efficient manner.Energy efficiency is ensured through the following-Infrastructure supports natural sunlight-inclusion of skylights in hallways, bathrooms, and other common areas reduce our need for artificial lighting.Natural sunlight creates a more relaxed learning environment compared to the harsh overhead lights. Keeping the lights off keeps the room cooler during the summer months.LEDs or CFLs are installed in auditorium, Library, Language lab, staffroom and pre-primary classes, which serve as a better option for energy saving.Energy-saving power strips- In Labs, exam room and language lab, computers and other devices are plugged into power strips to help mitigate their stand-by power usage. Not only this helps save power on a day-to-day basis, it also makes it easier to unplug all the devices during long holiday breaks.Televisions are changed to Flat and LCD Screens-Installation of flat screen TVs help our school save energy.LCD/LED TVs are installed at reception, Principal’s, GM’s, and GS’ rooms as their screens use less power, often less than half or a third of the amount of a comparably sized CRT screen.Investment in better cooling options-Investment in ceiling fans and window fans is done to keep air moving in classrooms during summer months. Classrooms are designed in a way that they are well lit and ventilated.Class in the Grass-Games and some EVS and science classes are conducted in the open green ground?and science park which ultimately lead to energy saving.Assignment of Classroom Jobs to students- Assigning jobs to students help make energy-efficiency a habit. Some examples include an electrician, who is in charge of turning lights on and off and an IT incharge, who can help with classroom computers and other electronics. By giving students extra responsibilities in the classroom, they can take energy savings into their own hands and carry those lessons over at home.?Unused Rooms and Spaces are kept closed-Energy consumption is reduced by closing off certain rooms by shutting doors and closing vents for the cooling system.Everyone Helps Save Energy at School-Students, as well as teachers, staff, and administrators, take small steps that reduce energy waste at school. Teachers make sure that students understand the importance of reducing the school’s impact. ................
