August 25, 2014

Welcome to English III at Iowa Park High School for 2014-2015.

This course focuses on:

Reading – American literature and the influences upon it; Writing – its processes and purposes (includes research); Listening and Speaking – evaluation and high-level thinking skills; and Viewing and Representing – analysis and projects.

Classroom Procedures

1. Demonstrate RESPECT for others at all times.

2. Be sitting in your chair prepared to participate in class before the tardy bell rings.

3. A journal assignment will be on the board almost every day. These assignments should be kept throughout the week in a composition notebook. These notebooks will be kept in the classroom. They will be graded randomly throughout the week, and they will be graded every Friday for a weekly grade.

4. Bring a blue or black pen, notebook paper, and applicable textbook or novel to class each day.

5. Write neatly!!! I cannot grade your work if I cannot read it.

6. Writings in this class must not be immoral or illegal; I am the judge.

7. Put your name on everything you turn in; I cannot give you credit if there is no name. I will not play a guessing game as to whom a paper belongs!

8. The supplies you need are

a. notebook paper,

b. blue or black pen (NO other colors of pens will be accepted),

c. flash drive (optional, though helpful for papers and projects),

d. project supplies (like posters) in the future—you’ll be given advance notice,

e. two composition notebooks,

f. a highlighter

g. a package of sticky notes, and

h. a folder (mandatory) and a secondary folder (optional).

Discipline Procedures

1. Tardies should be avoided. The school handbook is very clear as to the steps that will be taken if tardies do occur.

2. Do not get cell phones or other electronic devices out in class if you want to keep them unless you are asked to use them.

3. If a classroom rule or procedure is not followed, the first offense will receive a warning. The second offense will receive a parent phone call and detention. The third offense will receive a parent conference and additional detention.

4. If the offense is extreme, the order of the discipline can be changed at the teacher’s discretion.

5. Bullying or fighting of any sort will result in immediate dismissal to the office.

Graded activities will include things such as tests, essays, classroom projects, cooperative learning activities, oral presentations, reading assignments, literary analysis, and homework. Grade calculation is in order of its weight: Major Tests and Projects

Daily Assignments

Tutorials are by arrangement with the student and teacher. They can be arranged before and/or after school.

A student who is absent is responsible for getting the makeup work from the teacher and getting it turned in within the appropriate amount of time as allowed per school policy. All work is due at the specified time. If an assignment is one day late, it will automatically lose thirty points; the highest grade that can be achieved will be a 70. If an assignment is two days late, it will automatically lose fifty points; the highest grade that can be achieved will be a 50. An assignment is not acceptable after that point. It should be turned in on time!

Unless otherwise instructed, handwritten documents will be completed on regular notebook paper (not spiral). Computer-generated assignments should be double spaced in Times New Roman (size 12) or Tahoma (size 11). Printer problems are not accepted as an excuse for not having an assignment. Email the document to me or take your flash drive to a working computer before school begins. All documents that are required to be typed or all projects that are done on the computer will also be expected via email to me no later than the class period of the date it is due.

Please note the following: Cheating and plagiarism will NOT be tolerated. There will be NO second chances. I will check every piece of work that is supposed to be original, and if I find it has been copied you will receive a 0, no questions asked and no opportunities to do the assignment again. You are to do your own work, and you are not to take credit for any other person’s work.

My conference periods are fourth and seventh periods.

My email address is lmcilroy@.

Best wishes for a successful and happy year. Please return the following to me no later than Friday, August 29, 2014.
