VS.3a Reasons for English colonization in America:

Jamestown, 1607:

1) Jamestown was primarily an economic venture. (to make money)

2) The stockholders of the Virginia Company of London financed the settlement of Jamestown.

3) Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in North America in 1607. (2007 celebrated 400 years!!!)

VS.3 d System of Government:

12) In 1619, the governor of Virginia called a meeting of the Virginia Assembly.

The Assembly met as one legislative body and included:

a. the governor b. the governor’s council

c. two burgesses, (representatives) from each of the divisions of VA

13) At that time, only certain free adult men had the right to take part.

14) The current Virginia General Assembly dates back to 1619 with the establishment of the General Assembly and its burgesses in Jamestown. It was the first elected legislative body in English America giving the settlers the opportunity to control their own government.

House of Burgesses: 15) By the 1640’s, the burgesses became a separate legislative body, called the Virginia House of Burgesses. They met seperately from the Governor’s Council as one of the two legislative bodies of the General Assembly.

VS.3e Jamestown becomes a more diverse colony:

16) Portuguese sailors captured African men and women from what is present-day Angola. The status of these early African men and women as either servants or enslaved persons in Virginia is unknown.

17) Africans arrived in Jamestown against their will in 1619.

18) The arrival of Africans made it possible to expand the tobacco economy.

19) In 1620, the arrival of additional women made it possible for more settlers to establish families and a permanent settlement at Jamestown.

a. Powhatan, chief of many tribes, provided leadership to his people and taught the

c. The native peoples showed the settlers how to plant corn and tobacco.
