Computers 4 Kids Washington (C4Kids) ReportDecember, 2017C4Kids Background Since 1999, the Department of Corrections (DOC), the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), and the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) have been working in partnership on the Computers 4 Kids (C4Kids) program to provide usable surplus state computers to K-12 public schools in Washington. Equipment designated for C4Kids must meet the state’s minimum configuration standards, which are updated annually by staff at OSPI, the departments of Corrections and Enterprise Services, K-12 school districts and educational service districts. Current PC Specifications:Intel based Dual Core i3, i5, or i7 desktop or laptop.Minimum 4 GB RAM (usually 8 GB) and 80 GB hard drive (usually larger), DVD R/RW drive, USB ports, supports Windows 7 or higher, Ethernet NIC card and sound card.17 inch or larger LCD flat panel (desktop), 13-15 inch display (laptop).Printer Specifications:Monochrome laser printer — minimum speed 6 pages per minute.C4Kids Request Process & Eligibility Requests for computers are made through OSPI, who maintains waitlists of schools that have requested computers. The percentage of students eligible for the free- or -reduced price meals program determines district eligibility for C4Kids computer systems:45% and Less. Purchase refurbished computers from the Airway Heights Correctional Center (AHCC) in Spokane. 45% and Up. Free, non-refurbished lease return computers from the Department of Enterprise Services (DES).Fees for Refurbished Computers (Effective 4/2/2018)$22 system includes:CPU — no hard drive — that meets or exceeds state standardsMouse and keyboard (upon request).$27 system includes:CPU that meets or exceeds state standardsHard driveMouse and keyboard (upon request).$32 system includes:CPU that meets or exceeds state standardsHard drive and LCD monitor.Mouse and keyboard (upon request).The refurbishing fee for laptops or printers is $27. Missing the power supply — $24.C4Kids Program AccomplishmentsA total of 4,736 refurbished and lease-return computers (3,057 and 1,679, respectively) were distributed to needy schools in 57 districts during 2017, bringing the total for the program to over 102,000 computers.
