Southern student wins Johnson’s/Essence beauty secrets essay contest

Brittany Adolph, a senior at Southern University, is one of two winners of Johnson’s Baby Oil and Essence magazine’s “What’s Your Beauty Secret?” essay contest. Her prizes include a trip to New York and a photo shoot for the national magazine.

“I can’t believe it,” the 22-year-old Baton Rouge native said, adding that this was her first time entering any kind of contest.

Johnson’s Baby Oil asked participants to “tell us your favorite Johnson’s Baby Oil beauty secret” in 200 words or less for a chance to win the prize package. The 2005 Broadmoor High graduate said she submitted her beauty secret essay about three months ago.

Adolph said her beauty secret is placing a few caps of Johnson’s baby oil in her bath water. Adolph wrote, in part, that “Ever since I was a baby, my mother put a few caps full of baby oil in my bath water and I think it locks in moister and leaves your skin radiant,” adding that she has never had problems with dry skin.

The history major, who is working toward becoming a college professor, is all smiles when she describes what she has won. She gets a prize pack which includes a first-class flight to New York, a hotel suite, a Johnson’s gift basket with $200 worth of items, a makeover with a professional make-up artist and a photo shoot with the other winner for a Johnson’s advertisement that will be published in an upcoming issue of Essence magazine. An excerpt of her essay will be published in Essence.

“This was my first time entering any kind of contest,” said Adolph. “I had a friend who told me her mother likes to enter contests and has won two contests in her lifetime. That inspired me to enter a contest.”

Adolph said she looked for a contest that suited her and found Johnson’s contest. “I’m excited because it’s a new experience,” said Adolph. “Just knowing that thousands of people applied for it and I won.”

“Whenever you see something that you want to do, go for it, because you never know what door will be opened or what God is going to do.”

Local community center to be named in honor of SU’s Barbara Carpenter

The East Baton Rouge Parish Housing Authority will name the Clarksdale Apartments Community Center in honor of Dr. Barbara West Carpenter, Southern University’s dean of the Center for International Education and director of Continuing Education, Distance Education and the Center for Service Learning.

The dedication ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 13, at the Clarksdale Apartments Community Center, 801 Swan Ave.

“I’m in awe,” said Carpenter. “When you serve the community and you serve people because it’s something that you want to do, it’s not something you do for recognition. I’m truly honored because you do want needs to be done and don’t think about getting recognized for it.”

Carpenter coordinates study abroad programs in Mexico, Senegal, China and Belize. She has served as the project director for the university’s Agency of International Development programs and has participated on development projects in Jamaica, Sierra Leone, and Gambia.

Prior to serving in her current position, Carpenter was Director of Southern’s Division of Vocational Education, Director of the Vocational Home Economics Department, Louisiana State Supervisor for Vocational Home Economics and Secondary Education Teacher and Supervisor of Student Teachers.

She chairs the Board of Commissioners for the Baton Rouge Housing Authority, of which she has been a member for more than 20 years and was named the local Commissioner of the Year by the Louisiana Housing Council in 2008. Carpenter also received the LHC’s Regional Commissioner of the Year Award the same year.

Carpenter is also active in several community and professional organizations including the March of Dimes, Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, Rotary International of Baton Rouge, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. International, of which she served as president for six years, and has authored numerous articles.

The Clarksdale Apartments was the first site Southern service learning students volunteered when the Service Learning program began on the Baton Rouge campus in 1993.

The Clarksdale Apartments, completed in July 1943, are located just east of Southern’s Laboratory School. The brick veneer complex has been completely modernized and comprises 22 one-story buildings, featuring 47 living units, including three handicapped accessible units, a laundry facility and the community center.

Southern School of Nursing set for Pinning Ceremony

Southern University’s School of Nursing will hold its’ Spring Pinning Ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, in the auditorium of the J.K. Haynes School of Nursing Building.

Sixty undergraduate students will be recognized for earning degrees from the School of Nursing.

Jason Hughes, Executive Director for Governmental and External Affairs for the Southern University System, will serve as the keynote speaker.

In his position, Hughes, who is also a Southern grad, serves as senior advisor to the system president and members of the Southern University System Board of Supervisors. He also oversees the day-to-day operations of the division of governmental and external affairs, and serves as the system’s point person at the federal, state, and local levels.

Prior to joining the Southern University System, Hughes served as the Regional Manager and Legislative Liaison to U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu and as Deputy Legislative Director to former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco.

Southern Naval Officer Reserve Training Corp. Midshipmen 1st Class Brandice Hoosier, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., will also be commissioned during the ceremony. After graduation, Hoosier will serve as a nurse in the Navy Nurse Corps.

Southern’s School of Nursing has been named the 2010 “Nursing School of the Year” by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation and the Louisiana State Nurses Association.

Jazz legend Allen Toussaint tops “Alvin Batiste Tribute” list

Hall of Fame jazz great Allen Toussaint headlines the list of performers for Southern University’s 2nd Annual Alvin Batiste Jazz Institute Celebration at for 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, in the F. G. Clark Activity Center.

Some of the artists scheduled to perform include: Nicholas Payton, Phillip Manuel, Leah Chase and Donald Harrison.

Tickets, $40 in advance and $50 at the door, are on sale in the Southern University System Foundation Office, 3rd Floor of the J. S. Clark Administration Bldg.
