TITLE: Activities Assistant

Position Overview The Activity Aide assists the Activities Department to provide group and individual activities for the residents. Duties will include personal contact with a varying resident population and a varied work schedule that includes weekends, evenings and holidays. Tasks involve record keeping, attention to the environment, use of supplies and equipment, and maintenance of storage area, safety and infection control procedures.

Qualifications

Completion of high school or equivalent/GED.

Unencumbered NV driver’s license preferred. Must obtain CPR certification within 90 days of hire.

In absence of Activities Director, may provide work direction to one or several Volunteers.

Technical Skills

Ability to operate audio-visual equipment and other types of media

Good knowledge of the policies and procedures of a long term care facility

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing

Ability to read and write at a high school level

Ability to work independently; to prioritize tasks and organize work efficiently

Ability to motivate people and be sensitive to their needs

Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships

Skill in providing support in the planning, coordinating and implementation of an activities program to meet the diverse needs of Nursing Home residents

Understanding and awareness of problems of the aging

Respect for resident rights and confidentiality

Manual dexterity and physical agility to operate all equipment and transport residents in wheelchairs

Must have proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite as well as the ability to quickly learn Pershing General Hospital’s software system

Ability to work varying shifts and hours in conjunction with planned special events or activities

General Responsibilities

1. Exhibits behaviors that are consistent with the Mission, Philosophy, and Values of Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home as well as the culture and objectives of Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home. All employees are expected to work as needed In providing health and wellness services in the communities within Pershing General Hospital and Nursing Home.

2. Assists the Activities Director in the development and implementation of activities/programs which enrich the lives of the residents. Continue the activity program in the absence of the Activity Director.

3. Develop and lead small, medium, and large group activities and in accordance with each resident’s plan of care.

4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the Activities Department and other departments of the facility. Cooperate with other departments in meeting the needs of the residents.

5. Conduct one-to-one programs such as delivering and reading mail as needed.

6. Work with volunteers – assist in work direction of volunteers as needed.

7. Drive van for outings/medical appointments as requested.

8. Proactively encourage and support resident rights.

9. Work with residents who are low functioning.

10. Prepare rooms, equipment, and supplies prior to each program, and clean up after each program.

11. Transport residents to and from programs as needed.

12. Assist with the development of the monthly calendar including providing creative input, ideas, and suggestions for programs and volunteer recruitment.

13. Maintain a safe Activity environment by using appropriate risk management, preventive maintenance, cleaning and storage.

14. Attend staff in-services/meetings/workshops and educational seminars are required.

15. Follow established chain of command concerning department and facility business.

16. Encourage resident and family participation in activities.

17. Assist Director in evaluating effectiveness of program, individual needs, and participation levels of each resident.

18. Assist with media correspondence, mailings, newsletters, bulletin boards and displays.

19. Help maintain a pleasant and cheerful nursing home environment by displaying a positive, friendly and enthusiastic demeanor.

20. Participate in and promote staff participation in facility-wide special activities such as dress-up days and special observances.

Wears identification while on duty. Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Completes annual education requirements. Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state and federal regulations. Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times. Reports to work on time and as scheduled. Attends annual review and performs departmental in-services. Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments and staff. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Attends committee, QI and management meetings, as appropriate. Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety, and infection control. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
