Dear Oaklands Families,
As fall is upon us so is cold and flu season. We are starting to experience a large number of students who are going home sick. If your child is in grade 4 or 5 we are urging you to please remember to stock their backpack with several masks for at school. As well we ask that you speak to them about wearing their masks in class at all times, except when eating. Masks for students in grades K ? 3 are strongly encouraged.
If there is a medical reason for them to not wear a mask, please notify the office and classroom teacher. There are emergency masks in the office however students and staff are expected to come prepared with their own.
In addition, please do not send your child to school if they are not feeling well or have symptoms of any cold or flu. When in doubt, please phone 811 or check your child's symptoms with the BC COVID-19 symptom checker online to determine if a test recommended. The COVID checker can be found here .
If your child has a cough, sniffles, stomach nausea, fatigue, or headache, do not send your child to school. Thank you for your continued support with keeping our children and the Oaklands community safe. We are stronger together and will make it through this with your help.
Since 2013, September 30th has been known by many as Orange Shirt Day. This is an event that grew from the story of a Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation woman named Phyllis Webstad. Phyllis shared a painful story of having her new school clothes, which included a very special shiny orange shirt, taken from her at the age of six when she arrived at St. Joseph Mission residential school. Her story created an opportunity for discussion on the aspects and experiences of the residential school legacy. The combination of Orange Shirt Day with the new National Day for Truth and Reconciliation allows Canadians to demonstrate their acknowledgement of the legacy of the residential school program by wearing orange shirts and purposely engaging in the Calls to Action identified in the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. More information on Victoria Orange shirt day can be found here:
Our first professional development day is on Monday September 27th. Teachers will be working together to generate their class profiles and determining areas to focus instruction. Our planning for teaching will focus on assessment for learning strategies that align with proficiency scales to communicate student learning. We have an incredibly collaborative and dedicated staff and I am proud of their commitment to student learning and success.
Have a peaceful and safe weekend.

Health and Safety and Outside Play:
We are seeing an increase in toys that have been brought from home out on the playground. We ask that you please refrain from bringing toys and cards from home as it is very difficult for our Supervisors to monitor and mediate during recess brakes.
Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Let's Get Fit Oaklands: Run Across Canada
Attention Oaklands Parents
Volunteer Gardeners Wanted: Oaklands Garden Courtyard When: October 2nd
Time: 10:00am
We are seeking help from parents to donate 1-2 hours on Saturday October 2nd in our school garden.
Our courtyard garden is an integral part of our Outdoor Education Program for Kindergarten to Grade 5 students. It is designed to provide a safe space for our children to connect with nature, with other students, and with themselves. When children go outside to learn, the direct result is healthier, happier children.
Bring your gardening gloves and a shovel/rake if you have them. Children are also welcome to assist their parents. We will provide pizza at 12:00pm. Our focus for this garden work party will include: filling planter boxes with soil, planting, painting planter boxes (weather permitting), general maintenance, hanging hooks, and a possible building of a bench. Some tips/thoughts/ideas about what to do next in the courtyard will be discussed
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Stefanie Sloboda, our new Outdoor Ed teacher at ssloboda@sd61.bc.ca.
A google sign up is coming... Please save the date.
Congratulations to all our runners who ran a combined total of 84 1/2 laps of the school this morning. Thank you to parents that came to cheer and some to run as well. See you next week Tuesday and/or Friday morning @ 8:20-8:40am.
Everyone is invited to start running laps around the school 2 mornings per week (Tuesdays & Fridays). Your laps will be recorded on class lists. At the end of each month we will calculate how many kilometres we have run as a school community. Parents are welcome to run with their child if they wish.
Start Location: Meet Ms. Mueller @ Rock Garden Start Time: 8:20-8:40am Days: Tuesdays and Fridays
