21st Century Innovation Project

The 21st Century Innovation Team is one administrator and two teachers, Jan Murphy, Kate O’Donnell and Patty Pursell. They were selected by the Innovation Review Board made up of local business owners who made financial contributions to make the project possible.

In early summer, the team began qualitative and quantitative research which resulted in a plan called the Wallingford 100. This comprehensive plan includes innovative practices for our school district to produce systemic and sustainable changes that begin at birth and extend beyond high school.

The district will create community core values and adopt a belief system that incorporates a growth mindset. The shared vision is to “Change Mindset with 100% Community Support for 100% Student Engagement and 100% Graduation”. Every member of the community is invited to read the book Mindset by Carol Dweck and become a partner in re-designing education.

Mindset

Mindset is all about motivation. We believe that you can teach a student almost anything if he/she is motivated to learn.

As educators and parents, we can develop motivation in our children or eliminate it just by the praise we give. What we define as valuable will have a profound affect on students’ motivation. We can help to create fixed mindsets or growth mindsets.

A fixed mindset avoids challenges, gives up easily, deflects criticism and feels threatened by others’ success. A growth mindset works hard, embraces challenges, learns from criticism and celebrates the success of others.

The author, Carol Dweck states, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong. The most important thing you can do to help your child to instill a growth mindset is to praise them for effort rather than for talent.”
