MISSION STATEMENT

The Foreign Language Program educates students to become better global citizens and celebrate diversity as they deepen their understanding of how language expresses and embodies cultural reality; enhance their appreciation of cultural artifacts in the foreign culture; become aware of; reflect on, and analyze values, beliefs and customs in the foreign culture and their own, and acquire foreign literacy skills.

Course Description This course begins a sequence developing functional proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and culture. 75 contact hours.

Course Objectives This is a beginning Russian language course designed to develop functional proficiency and communicative strategies used in everyday situations. This course introduces students to vocabulary common in everyday interactions, and helps to learn to read and write simple Russian texts. Selected material covers aspects and trends of the Russian-speaking culture. Language learning strategies are provided to allow students to become independent language learners.

The students will:

1. Complete pre-lesson through lesson 7 of Troika textbook and workbook to learn basic grammatical strategies, develop beginning communicative strategies, and become familiar with diverse aspect of Russian culture.

2. Complete assigned homework to review the material covered in class.

3. Participate in program or community activities to expand understanding of Russian culture

Course Requirements:

*Attend all class sessions. What is missed in a language class is seldom recovered in the classroom.

*Actively participate in class. Come to class prepared to engage in the scheduled activities. Having missed a class is not an acceptable excuse to be unprepared.

*Hand in assignments when due.

*Make up assignments/quizzes/tests/may or may not be allowed at the professor’s discretion.

*Be prepared for vocabulary quiz at the beginning of every lesson.

*Attend Russia Club meetings &Russian Film Nights, bring friends.

*Plan to have at least one trip to Denver Russian business areas: Glendale Public library, Russian Bookstore, Grocery Stores, Russian Restaurant.

3. Attend foreign language lab.

Why Study Russian?

The reason for studying Russian language and culture is as unique and diverse as you are.
