INTRODUCTION - Tulsa Community College

INTRODUCTION

The Tulsa Community College Allied Health programs are designed to prepare students to enter exciting and rewarding medical fields. All courses of study have been developed with the assistance of the medical community, and will feature actual experience in a clinical setting with the facilities contracted by the individual allied health programs.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Medical Transcription certificate option is designed to prepare individuals with the skills needed to become a medical transcriptionist in a hospital, physician’s office, transcription service and related healthcare facilities. To perform their job, medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. They generally listen to recordings on a headset, using a foot pedal to pause the recording when necessary, and key the text into a personal computer or word processor, editing as necessary for grammar and clarity. The documents they produce include discharge summaries, history and physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, progress notes, referral letters, manuscripts and other administrative documents. Medical transcriptionists return transcribed documents to the physicians or other healthcare professionals who dictated them for review and signature, or correction. These documents eventually become part of patient’s permanent health records.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Medical Transcription Program selects a new class during the summer semester (May 1) to begin in the fall semester each year.
