3rd Grade Science Habitat Project

3rd Grade Science Habitat Project

Due: November 4, 2016

We have been studying a unit on Interactions of Living Things. In this unit we learned about the different vertebrates and invertebrates. During our Bunker Hill trip, we had an extensive conversation about animal adaptations. You are going to complete a Habitat Book Report along with a visual aid to support what we’ve learned and discussed in class.

Directions: You are to choose a specific vertebrate or invertebrate of your choice. (you must specific which one it is in your report) You will create either a poster or shoebox diagram as a visual aid for their report.

Examples of visual aids:

Collage/Poster board - include pictures of your habitat, examples of plants and animals, and important/interesting information.

Shoebox diagram - provide a 3-D diagram of your habitat with plants, animals, and land features.

Report Guidelines:

1. Opening paragraph: 4-5 sentences describing the habitat you chose, why you chose that habitat, where it is located, and general features of the habitat (land, climate, etc.)

2. Animals paragraph: List 4-5 animals that live in the habitat and some adaptations, behaviors, or traits they have that helps them live in their habitat (ex: A black bear hibernates in the winter in the mountain habitat to survive in the colder temperatures).

3. Plants paragraph: List 4-5 plants that live in the habitat and some adaptations, behaviors, or traits they have that helps them live in their habitat.

4. Closing/Interesting Facts: List 4-5 interesting facts about your habitat. Also state why you chose to research this particular habitat.

This project will be graded using these directions as the rubric. The written report will count for 40 points (each paragraph worth 10 points). Sentence structure, subject-verb agreement, and overall style will be graded in the report. The visual aid will be worth 40 points (based on student’s level of effort, creativity, and overall neatness). Ten points will be awarded if the student’s project appears to be completely done by you, although I encourage parents to HELP, not complete. The final ten points will be awarded based on your oral presentation of your project (presence, knowledge of subject, and delivery).

You will find attached an outline to help you organize your thoughts for your report. The FINAL COPY will be hand written neatly on lined paper. Make sure your report has a title and your name on it.
