[Pages:3]ITEM 680.92020404 - CONDUIT-GALVANIZED STEEL - MULTI-CELL ? 4 DUCT

DESCRIPTION This work shall consist of furnishing and installing conduit - galvanized steel ? multi-cell ? 4 duct in accordance with the plans and as directed by the Engineer.

MATERIALS General The conduit - galvanized steel - multi-cell - 4 duct shall consist of a galvanized steel outerduct with four (4) ? 1 ? NPS PVC innerducts.

Outerduct The outerduct and associated fittings, couplings and expansion fittings shall conform to the requirements of Subsection 723-20 for Class 1 Rigid Metal Electrical Conduit. The conduit shall have a nominal outer dimension of 4 ? inches.

Innerduct Assembly The innerduct assembly shall consist of four (4) PVC ducts. Each duct shall be a nominal 1-1/2 NPS outside diameter with an internal diameter of 1 1/4 inches.

The PVC innerduct assembly shall be pre-assembled in the factory and factory inserted into the outerduct.

Innerducts and any spacers used internally shall all be dielectric. Internal spacers shall hold the innerducts in a proper spacing and alignment and be certified to withstand all handling pressures and stresses.

Innerduct bends shall be tested for cut through resistance in accordance with Bellcore Standard TR-TSY-000356, minimum demonstrated cut through resistance 100 minutes or greater.

Each innerduct is to have a factory installed gasket assembly to provide a water and airtight sealing system.

The innerduct shall have an airburst rating of 1.4 MPa.

The innerduct shall be free from holes, splits, blisters, inclusions and other performance affecting imperfections.

Innerducts shall be pre-lubricated during the manufacturing process to provide a dynamic coefficient of friction of .06 to .09 in accordance with Bellcore Standard GR-TSY-356-CORE, Oct. 1995, section 4.1.5.

The lubricant shall be compatible with the proposed fiber optic cable jacket.

The innerduct to be provided shall be solid colors for duct identification. The colors shall be stable to fading in storage and resistant to discoloration in the buried environment. The colors of

the innerducts to be provided shall be white, gray, orange and green.

Operating temperature range -20EC to +60EC.

The coupling system shall be designed to allow the innerducts to float within their seals to provide a non-binding, flexible connection to eliminate binding forces between the outer and innerducts.

Underground Warning Tape Underground Warning Tape shall be a heavy-duty polyethylene material that is compounded for direct burial service and which will resist acids, alkalis and other soil substances. The tape shall be orange with a continuous legend " CAUTION BURIED FIBER OPTIC CABLE" print in black. The underground warning tape shall be 6 inches wide and have a minimum thickness of 4 mils.

Pulling Tape Pulling tape shall be a detectable woven polyester, aramid fiber or combination of the two fibers with a minimum tensile strength of 8 kN. The pulling tape shall have two (2) 24 gage (minimum gage size), insulated tracer wires installed as part of the pulling tape construction.

Innerduct Plugs Innerduct plugs shall be corrosion-proof, chemical-resistant, removal, reusable and provide a light, air and gas tight seal to seal the innerduct. The plug shall have a tie tab for securing pulling tape.

Terminating Plug Terminating plug shall be corrosion-proof, chemical-resistant, removal, reusable and provide a light, air and gas tight seal around the installed wire or cable. The terminating plug shall have an individual entry port for each installed wire or cable.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS Subsections 680-3.03, 680-3.04, 680-3.05, 680-3.06, 680-3.07, 680-3.08, 680-3.09 and 680-3.13 of the Standard Specifications shall apply.

Multi-cell conduit shall be installed by direct burial method or methods as approved by the Engineer.

The multi-cell conduit shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer's recommended procedures. At pullbox locations, the conduit shall be installed as shown on the plans.

All empty innerducts terminating in pullboxes or splice/pullboxes shall have a pulling tape installed. The Contractor shall leave 10 feet of pulling tape at each end of the innerduct run. After the installation of the pulling tape, the tape shall be secured to the innerduct sealing plug and the plug installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

No repairs will be permitted to the outerduct, innerduct or fitting. All broken, chipped, cracked or impaired lengths or fittings will be removed and replaced with new material.

All innerducts terminating in pullboxes or splice/pullboxes with installed wires or cables shall have a terminating plug installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

At the end of each days work, all conduit ? galvanized steel - multi-cell - 4 duct will be sealed. The proposed sealing method shall be approved by the Engineer.

The fiber optic cable will be installed in the orange innerduct of the multi-cell conduit or as ordered by the Engineer.

The underground warning tape shall be installed during trench backfilling for the multi-cell conduit. The underground warning tape shall be located directly above the conduit 300 mm below finished grade.

Every duct shall be tested after installation by blowing a mandrel through it in the presence of the Engineer's representative. This may be done as part of the installation of the pull tape. If the duct is to be encased in concrete, the test shall be performed prior to encasement so that the section can be replaced can be made if the mandrel does not pass. Otherwise, duct that has been installed by trenching shall be tested after backfilling and compaction are complete. The Contractor shall replace any section of duct that does not pass the mandrel.

Documentation is as specified under other items of these Contract Documents.

METHOD OF MEASUREMENT Multi-Cell Galvanized Steel Conduit ? 4 Duct will be measured for payment as the number of linear feet actually installed in accordance with the Plans or as ordered by the Engineer.

BASIS OF PAYMENT The unit price bid per linear foot for Multi-Cell Galvanized Steel Conduit ? 4 Duct shall include the furnishing of all labor, materials, tools, equipment, safety requirements all spacers, fittings, couplings, expansion joints, pulling tape, underground warning tape, termination plugs, spacers, duct sealing kits, splice/pullbox terminator fittings, innerduct plugs and incidentals as necessary to complete the work.

Conduit excavation, backfill, concrete encasement and documentation shall be paid under other contract items.
