Developing and Utilizing Internet-based Classroom Activities

“Searching the Web in ESL Class”

GRADE LEVEL: Advanced ESL

PRE-INSTRUCTION: Students should have a good understanding of spoken, as well as written English skills. The students should also have basic computer skills, i.e.: basic keyboarding and mouse skills.

MATERIALS NEEDED: Computer with Internet Access for the students to use, Internet Scavenger Hunt Worksheet (attached)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the lesson, the student will be able to:

• Go online without the help of instructor

• Do web searches

• Access different web sites and go to links

PROCEDURE:

1. Instructor will give a brief history of the Internet: when it started, why it was started, where we are now with Internet service.

2. Decoding a Web address or URL.

3. Have the students turn on the computers if they are not already running.

4. Have the students click on the Internet Explorer icon (or whatever online software you use to connect).

5. Explain that Yahoo is a search engine. By typing a word or phrase in the box and clicking the “search” button, Yahoo will look through its database for items that match your entry.

6. Let’ s try one together. Type “chocolate chip cookie recipe”. As you can see, Yahoo brought up 3 site matches. By clicking on one of the site matches, you would be able to see a recipe for chocolate chip cookies.

7. Distribute the Internet Scavenger Hunt Worksheet. Go over the first couple together as a group. Then let the students work independently or with a partner, depending on their comfort level, to complete the Scavenger Hunt. There may be more than one web site that will give you the correct answer.

EVALUATION: Student will hand in completed Internet Scavenger Hunt worksheet.
